Thought that there hasn't been much good 24" competitors? Another one has arrived!
Just released from Gateway, this beauty includes the FAROUDJA CHIPSET! Honestly I've been looking at the 21" model of this LCD for a good half of 2006 but hated the fact that it was so small. When I saw it before on Futureshop, it's image quality was spectacular.
Now that they have a 24" version avaliable, I'm going to be all over this.
http://www.gateway.com/img/prod/large/mntr_FPD2485W_large.jpg
Cosmetically it's the same as the 21" model.
Gateway website:

Some specs:
# 1920x1200 resolution
# 1000:1 contrast ratio
# 6ms response time
# Picture-in-picture
IMO if we compare specs to Dell 24", they're mostly the same, EXCEPT this one has dual component input, so it can also serve as a TV as well, AND the fact that it has the FAROUDJA CHIPSET! Yes, I'm really a fan of Faroudja, but if you've seen Faroudja, you'll love it too.
However, Dell's lowest price is $699...
This baby retails in the states for $679.99US... and I just saw it at Futureshop today for $799.99!!
http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0665000FS10081342&catid=22335
Considering how Futureshop always puts on a big margin, I don't doubt that it can match Dell's price, which is only $100 away.
I was eyeing the Dell before, but now I'll eye this. Anyone else with me?

sounds like a good price for a 24'' with faroudja. detailed specification here: http://support.gateway.com/s/MONITOR/7005576R/7005576Rsp2.shtml
it uses S-PVA panel.
also, i just found that it supports theme (like the magicbright feature on all the samsung lcd, which is why i like samsung a lot, and why i didn't buy the gateway 21''). must resist...

also, you may want to post it in the hot deal section, as i think the price is very good even compared to dell as you get more functions on this one.

Not surprised that reviews at CC are positive :P I'm sure they scan them just like Futureshop does.
Anyways, this is a new monitor so I doubt most of those are extremely accurate.

Nice to see a 16:10 monitor with actual aspect ratio controls. I can't beleive how many 16:10 monitors on the market currently don't have these settings. There is really no excuse, especially for units that have component inputs or declare themselves HDTV compatable. I don't care for my 16:9 imaged steched thank you. Dell had it covered....until they left the feature off the new 22" model......

widescreen with Faroudja? This combo doesn't make sense to me. Am I missing something?

If you're only using this LCD as a computer monitor, there really is no point in having Faroudja, as the whole reason of Faroudja is to upconvert interlaced/SD material to progressive/HD.
The only situations you would be using Faroudja is when you're using it to display video that is outside its native resolution (DVD, SDTV, HDTV, etc. but not computer).

Doesn't the Westinghouse 27-inch at Bestbuy also have Faroudja?
http://www.westinghousedigital.com/details.aspx?itemnum=19
It mentions: DCDi by Faroudja
From Amazon:
It features Faroudja's Emmy award-winning DCDi deinterlacing and scaling technology to up-convert standard video in DVDs to HD resolutions. DCDi (Directional Correlational Deinterlacing) technology eliminates the jagginess that conventional upconverters introduced to diagonal edges in video.
The price of the Westinghouse was $650 or $699 around Boxing Day.

IIRC it was $699 during Boxing Day.
But you can't compare a TV and a Monitor. This TV has a max res of 720P, while the monitor does 1280P. That's more than twice as many pixels on the screen, which translates to clearer pictures.

Is there a need for the Faroudja chipset if the LCD is connected directly to an upconverting DVD player?
sonick
Jan 14th, 2007, 06:52 PM
It would still be helpful because the upconverting player is likely outputting 720p or 1080i (or even maybe 1080p), which is not the native resolution of the LCD and thus would benefit from Faroudja when it is being rescaled.
Only when you are feeding it a signal in its native resolution (eg. from a computer) will its faroudja chip be unused.

True. However, most people don't use their monitors solely for outputting computer signals anymore anyways. That's also why there are 2x component inputs, which is a definate plus, especially for those people that have home theater systems set up in their computer room.

Unless someone comes out with a 24"+ higher resolution panel that's not limited to dual-link connection (e.g. 3007FPW) I doubt I'll bother, but that's just me

I would disagree and say most people still do use it just for outputting computer signals.

What's wrong with DVI-D connection?
According to the manual, the display cannot do 1080p using DVI...
Really?
But if you're using it for TV, you might as well use component..

Well worth the price, 1/16/2007

This is a stunning computer monitor that does double duty as a full HDTV 1080p monitor. In addition to DVI and VGA inputs, it also has two sets of component in, one S-Video and one composite video. Future Shop neglects to mention any of these video inputsIt also has a 4-port USB hub built in. It has the best picture quality of any LCD monitor I've seen so far. A bit bright for regular computer use, perfect for moviesgames. The only thing that's missing is a remote control. But it's primarily a computer monitor, rightHighly recommended.
Blows my mind I love this screen., 1/16/2007

I just picked this up a few night ago from the keele and St Clair location. It looks absolutely amazing watching rogers HD on it. The menu system is cool with nice sounds during navigation. The rotation and total adjustability of the stand is great. No auto rotation in windows 2003, besides that it's almost perfect.

I'm actually thinking of "borrowing" it from Futureshop this weekend and see if I can justify the cost. Might fix you guys up on a review if I have time, but a hard thing is, I don't have a Dell 24" to compare with :(
