View Full Version : Disputing 407 toll charges?

I'm wondering if anyone has successfully disputed a bill from the 407 people before?
My friend's mom just got an enormous bill from them but she's never taken the highway (and in fact, doesn't even have a car and doesn't drive). Apparently 6 years ago when her lease ended, she returned the car to the dealership with her plates still attached. Any idea if she can get out of paying?

All I can say is best of luck with that. When they were implementing a new financial system people were receiving two bills or incorrect statements. Their solution to their problem was to send people to collections (if they did not pay) and fix it after the fact.

Good luck. Thats all I can say. They are the biggest crooks going.
Took me 6 months to get them to acknowledge the 200 dollars I had sent them, they recorded me sending them the money but never applied to my bill.
Bill would be 100 dollars,
I would send 100 dollars
Next bill would show 100 dollar payment
New charges of 25 dollars.
New balance 125 dollars..
LOL I can laugh about it now but I cant tell you how frustrating those people are.
Then there was the time they were going to take me to collections for not paying my bill for 5 months. So I called them and asked them how much I owed them. - 1.25 Thats right they owed ME a $1.25. My account had a positive balance because I hadn't been taking the highway very much and instead of giving them 2 bucks a month for the transponder I had just paid a lump sum of 20 so I didn't have to worry about it, hence the positive balance. So I told them to go ahead and take me to collections...good luck with that.
It goes on and on....

I used to work for them. Your friends Mom probably made a mistake in submitting the payment. 407 has a process to trace payments, you just need to call / email / fax them.

That's funny, because one of my duties there was to prevent that from occurring. Did this happen recently? ;)

The collections thing was around 8 months ago.
The billing problem was a few years ago when the 407 was changing their billing system, if you were with them at that time im sure I don't have to tell you what a mess that was! One good thing did come out of the billing mess though, it was the final kick in the ass I needed to get off my lazy ass and find a new place closer to work so I didn't have to take the 407 :)

I'm not I understand what you mean? She has never submitted any payments as she has never taken the 407 before.
This week she received a bill (first one) relating to many tolls spanning over a period of time during which she has not even owned a car! The plates they captured in the photos were plates she had on a leased car more than 6 years ago which someone is apparently now using to avoid having to pay the tolls. It probably took the ETR some time to track down her current address as she has moved around quite a bit since the plates were registered with the MTO.
It's her fault for not removing the plates from the car after returning it to the dealership but the fact of the matter is someone is using a 'stolen' plate. Somehow I doubt the ETR cares though as long as they get paid.

I was there right after the switch, what a joke that was.

Whoops...nevermind...I got your post crossed with something else...lets see... The 407 can get historical ownerships for plate owners, They will usually erases any charges after the plate shows "returned" to the MTO as well as interest penalties. If the plate was stolen it would have to be reported to the police. As long as the plates were in her name she is responsible for them. The 407 could be difficult and not let her off the hook. Worse case scenario The interest and late fees are canceled and she pays the balance. But try the Ombudsperson, with a police report you might make some headway.
