FYI, the best for zoom Nikon lens would be
1 17-55mm 2.8f
2 28-70mm 2.8f
3 12-24mm 4f
4 17-35mm 2.8f
they all cost around 1500 to 1800.
Any other zoom lens by Nikon in that range are junk.
good luck.

The Nikon 35-70mm f/2.8 is an excellent lens. A bit older but just as sharp or sharper than any of the above.

Have two fabulous Nikon pro lenses that I am considering selling. AF-S Nikon 17-35mm f/2.8 ED IF and AF 35-70mm f/2.8 D. These are both wonderful pro lenses. They come with front/rear hoods, Hoya filter on the 17-35, and B+W filter on the 35-70. The 17-35 has just been serviced by Nikon Canada. The glass is perfect, the barrel has a couple of scuff marks on it. The 35-70 looks like it's just come out of the box.
The 17-35mm is rated 5/5 by Bjorn Rorslett http://www.naturfotograf.com/index2.html. Thom Hogan says "The best of the wide angle zooms Nikon has produced, no questions asked, which is saying something. Perhaps the sharpest wide angle zoom you can buy for a Nikon body." http://www.bythom.com/1735lens.htm. Photozone says "The Nikkor AF-S 17-35mm f/2.8D IF-ED is a professional grade lens and it delivers accordingly specifically regarding its superb build quality" and "For a dual-use strategy (film + digital and possibly full frame DSLRs in the future) the AF-S 17-35mm f/2.8D IF-ED remains a quite obvious choice." http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses/nikkor_1735_28/index.htm. SLR Gear rates the 17-35mm 9.71/10. "The standard lens for photojournalism and travel photography. Perfect for use with a film or a digital SLR." http://www.slrgear.com/reviews/showproduct.php/product/112/cat/13.
For the 35-70mm lens, Bjorn Rorslett rates in 4.5/5 http://www.naturfotograf.com/index2.html. Thom Hogan and Photozone have not rated the 35-70mm. SLR Gear rates it 9.33/10, and says "Excellent, fast aperture zoom lens for general photography. Push-pull type zoom is ideal for zoom effects during shooting. Distortion is well controlled throughout range." http://www.slrgear.com/reviews/showproduct.php/product/121/cat/13.
Really not sure what they're worth today. The 17-35 sells new for $2,052 (taxes in) plus filter at Aden Camera http://www.adencamera.com/index.asp?Category=18&Manufacturer=1&page=2. The 35-70 sells new for $560 (CDN, before tax or duty) plus filter at KEH http://www.keh.com/OnLineStore/ProductList.aspx. The 35-70 also has macro capability.
These are both excellent lenses. Let me know if you're interested.

Please don't give out incorrect advice. It gives photographers a bad name when people spew crap like this. Sure, it's not pro quality, but Nikon's $150 18-55DX will take great pictures if you have a clue how to use your camera.
OP: Yes, these lenses are great, but there's lots of good stuff out there.
For macro, get a 60mm/f2.8 micro nikkor. Should be about $450ish used, and is one of the sharpest lenses Nikon have produced.
