Will any mic/headset work with the PS2 Online?

Hey, I play NHL 2K7 online on the PS2 and I would like to talk to my friends over the game. I have a couple of questions:

-Do you need a mic or a headset to hear/speak over the game?
-Will any brand/type usb mic/headset work?
