Riskit, Thanks for the "equivalent" find! This IS the correct unit that's been rebadged from AudioVox. On page 2 of the Audiovox pdf, it shows the GoNav screen:

Mine is charging as I type this, but I won't be able to test it out until sometime tomorrow :)

From my previous post:

http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/showpost.php?p=4418276&postcount=20

The website information indicates the unit includes 1 GB Flash memory with full U.S. mapping.

and Page 50 (last page) of the Audiovox manual at:
http://www.audiovox.com/manuals/owners/1287693.pdf

The Audiovox unit is also listed as having 64MB SRAM + 8MB NOR flash onboard.

Maybe the 1GB is an included SD card with US Maps. The technology used for the SD card is flash memory.

The Gonav units being sold at Superstore come with a 512 Mbyte SD card, enough to hold the Cdn maps. These units don't have any on-board data storage, unlike the Mio which has 512 Mbytes built in (or 1 Gbyte in the U.S. models). Also note that this Gonav unit has a 266 MHz Arm processor, while the Mio has the 400 MHz XScale version of the Arm processor, which may make a difference in how snappy the response is. The Mio screen is specified as having 65K colours, while the above Audiovox specs say 26K colours.

Sirf Star III chipset is a definate advantage.

I'm running iGuidance 3.0 on my Dell PDA right now. I may grab one of the Gonav's in the morning and compare it to my PDA equuvalent and see if it has an updated map (I doubt it does though)

For $100, it's worth taking a look at, even if I just return it.

Looks very easy to hack actually.

Replace the "\Netropa IntelliNav\IntelliNav.exe" on the SD card with a standard WinCE explorer.exe

Voila. A WinCE desktop. From there, you can do anything. Remember to backup the original IntelliNav.exe file

Irresistable price... so eventually decided to buy and try this morning (7am to be exact)
In case other true RFDers want to know, I bought it at Eglinton/Don Mills RCSS and there're still 6 left at the counter.

First impression, not as good looking as the mio C310. The 26k color really can't compete w/ mio's 65k. And the interface looks or feels like the design back in Windows 3.1 or at most Windows 98 era. But hey, for $99 plus taxes, you won't be able to find it anywhere.

My gonav's battery is charged but I'm still charging it just in case it's not full yet. Detailed review will follow after my first use later this afternoon. Better get some sleep again now.

I plugged it in with the AC charger, it turns on but it never turns off on its own like its meant to since its inactive. So, if I pressed Power and turned it off, is it still charging? Is there an indicator of when it is charged?

Next time I see the manager of my local Superstore (I'm a regular shopper there for groceries and run into him now and again) I'm going to ask if he'd consider mentioning to his district manager that perhaps they should consider placing a limit of one per customer for the clearance electronics since it's not like they're having a problem selling them and regular customers are getting screwed for people buying in bulk and selling them on ebay. Perhaps if others did the same it might become Superstore policy.

Aside from that I was actually able to grab one. Been wanting a GPS for awhile. Perhaps I can drive outside my city now without getting lost

They gotta start factory sealing gadgets for exactly this reason - however mine looks all fresh and new but didn't come with a USB cable to my PC. I think that port is for the cig charger since it's the same size and that it actually doesn't come with a USB cable. Anybody else get one with their unit?

Looks ok, and tempting price, but I will stick to my MIO!! Excellent unit and worth every penny $199 + tax!

For those of you with a Manitoba location I *think* I know what's up and it's not good.

Looking in my "GPS info" menu I see alot of zero's for UTC, Local, Lat, lon, and spd with alt unknown. Also when I first power on the unit it's fine but then when I turn it off then on again it won't work (gets stuck at the start screen) unless I do a hard reset (and it then loses the touch pad sync settings you do when you first turn it on as well as setting it to km's instead of miles).

I'm betting because I've just been able to find a way to set the destination and not the start point that it gets the start point from the GPS info and the device thinking it's in Manitoba is all part of it being defective.

I've already called up Superstore and put one one hold for me to exchange tomorrow. You might want to do the same.

Ok, i bought the display unit with an additional 15%. The unit is new, but when i come home the ac adapter missing in the box, i'll return tommorow to see if they don't have it and if not i will ask for another discount ;). I already have an ac to car adapter so i can use it at home.I plug it and turn it on, after 2 minutes he give me a very accurate position with the map of Montreal, he was allready set in french language, i ask for a destination and he give me a good solution(not the best one but very good). I play a little with the main menu and seems that a lot of maps are already on the sd card. If i turn it off i have the same problems that peoples reports already he stuck at the start screen, but if you use the master power switch to turn on/off he restart without problem. Some info about my unit:
Operating System: Windows CE.net 4.2 build 021006
Software Version: GoNav v.N1.0.0
Map Version: NAVTEQ 2005 North America

I got the last one from Superstore Coventry in Calgary. It is missing the CD. I am wondering if I can borrow or copy the Cd from anybody who bought this unit.

I tried to turn on the GoNav but it is not loading. I'm wondering if I need the Cd to run this thing.

Please Pm me if I can create an image of your CD.

If you have the problem by only display the italic "Gonav", that means the system can not initialize with few seconds. If it does will display the regular screen with "GoNav" and shows up "Please wait...." at the bottom left corner. Few more seconds will display the program agreement. After you press "I agree", will show up the map and waiting for the signal lock in(at least 3-4 sats). The best way to pick the signal quickly, you have to lay the unit close to the window. The first time to lock on the present location will take about few minutes. Be patient to waiting for. If you don't see this happen, you have to do the hard reset (at the back of unit). If you try that still does work, will have to reinsert the SD card again (make sure it sit properly in the slot). The last solution you can do is to reload the software from those 3 cds.
Good luck and enjoy the best worth value device.

I picked one up last night. It is great for the price.

I did have trouble loading maps in to it for an upcoming trip to the USA.

When I included southern california, "GoNav Map Loader" crashed with "Internal error line 4251 Please Contact technical support." If I did not select southern california, I did not have any problems creating the new maps.

However, when I loaded the maps on the SD card, the GoNav software would no longer start. It crashed with:

Wrong File Version Data file:
linkinfo.bin: LI07 != LI08

I did some searching, and it means that it is expecting version LI08 maps, but the maps are LI07.

I then copied the software from the SD card folder on the CD. This allowed the GPS to work, but the software is an earlier version. The version number reported is the same, but I did notice that the battery indicator is on the oppisite side of the original software.

Did anyone generate new maps and not have to revert the software on the SD Card? I am hoping that someone has a newer version of the CDROM than the one that came with mine. And that generating a map with southern california works.

Just picked up the last unit at 130 Ave location in Calgary. I've got it from the display, they told me someone returned it. Has no box or CDs, just unit itself with SD card, cradel and car charger. If I turn it on without SD card it is asking me to insert it. When I insert it, it just displays "GoNaV Navigator" screen, and does not go any further, does not respond to any other buttons and even on/off button. Sounds like SD card has nothing on it. Can someone spare install CDs? Also, if anyone is thinking about returning working unit in Calgary area could you please PM me?

Do you have a card reader to check what is on the card? If not, you can install Microsoft Active Sync and then connect to the USB port on the GPS. You can then read/write the contents of the SD card.

p.s. Where do you get windows ce explorer.exe files etc. ?

I was able to play with winCE on this unit:

1. turn it on and run the nav software
2. push the setting button, and then click the "i" icon on the upper-left corner, this will display the info screen
3. click "exit", you will close the nav software and display the empty desktop
4. press anywhere on the screen with your stylus (this like right-click on mouse), then you have a choice to create a new folder on the desktop
5. double click the folder you created, then you will see the explorer
6. then if you have any winCE software on your SD card (for example any MP3 player app) you can play with that

However, this is not a real hack! I would like to see someone get the "start" button at the bottom...

where can we get an explorer.exe file to be copied on the SD card? I tried to connect the unit with my PC and found the explorer.exe, however, it is in the ROM and do not allow me to copy it.

I also have IGuidance 3.0 which is working on my iPaq wonderfully but would like to know how to update on this unit.

Thank everybody who is willing to work on this...

I would also love to see a hack. I hope there is one soon.
When I first loaded mine it gave me an error msg. Then i took the sd card out. Pushed the reset button in the back. Put the sd card back let the rest button go changing from a white screen to the gonav screen, Then it all worked properly..

The box said it comes with the USB cable but I did not get any USB cable did anyone else experiance that. I am guessing I can just use any mini USB cable am I correct.

Thanks

You can "hack" this GPS unit easily once you know how it works.

You only need to replace the IntelliNav.exe in the Netropa IntelliNav folder on your SD card with the application of your choice and it will launch at boot.

I also have the start menu available after using a different application. (Click the bottom of the touch screen)

I renamed ns.exe from the nScriptm 0.104 package here:

http://s-k-tools.com/index.html?m_util.html

to IntelliNav.exe and then modified this file from here to launch TomTom 6 (The touch screen is backwards unless you run screenrotate.exe (google for it) twice before launching TomTom and you need to run the unit upside down but it works!):

It's a two step process as ns.exe launches and then you need to launch your tomtom.ns file from the application. I'm sure there is a better launching method but I'm really only interested in GPS on my unit.

http://www.gpspassion.com/forumsen/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=72478&whichpage=11

Here's my modified TomTom launcher file for the S600A:

// --------- copy from here to end in a tomtom.ns file --------------

Replying to myself but if you want to launch explorer:

Download this file:

AutoBoot File (http://tfgbd.web1000.com/autorun%20(launch%20explorer%20by%20anthema).zip)

Extract both files in your Netropa IntelliNav folder and rename autoboot.exe to IntelliNav.exe (backup original IntelliNav.exe) and, after a reset, explorer will start at boot.

I think you should also have the start menu available but it autohides by default.

Enjoy!

Yea, I have a card reader on my desktop, but when I insert GoNav SD card in it nothing comes up, I suppose it is empty, may not even be formatted, becase it does not come up as a drive.

ok, I figured out how to play divx/mp3 on this unit.

1. run the gonav software, go to the menu screen and click on the "i" icon. it will take you to the system information page, click on the "Exit" button. it will close the software and display the empty desktop.

2. install activesync on your PC

3. connect the unit to PC via USB cable

4. open activesync and click on the "explore" button, then go into windows folder, create a short cut to explorer.exe and drag it to "desktop" folder, you will see a shortcut appeared on the unit

5. run the TCPMP setup program (dixv/mp3 player, tcpmp.corecodec.org), choose SDMMC as the destination, it will transfer a bunch of files to the unit. then click the middle button of the D-Pad on the unit to select the
destination folder.

6. double click the shortcut to launch the explorer. browse to \SDMMC\TCPMP folder, double click "player" to play

now I need to figure out a way to enter data. Is there a on-screen keyboard for winCE similiar to the Pocket PC's built-in SIP keyboard?

I think my unit won't hold a charge. I tried plugging it in with the adapter and leaving it on to charge, also tried turnining it off and leaving it plugged in the AC adapter. I tried both of these ways for a couple of hours. I'm not sure if it was charging at all during this time, since there's no indication of charge, but when I try to power it without having it hooked up to a cigarette lighter or to the AC adapter, it does not turn on..

So far i have added movie playback to my gonav. i wouldnt maybe adding some pda apps to this thing if its possible, i guess as long as it suports wince and the arm processor you can add anything. worth the 99$ imo at least for the tinkering value since this my first gps unit.

So far i have added movie playback to my gonav. i wouldnt maybe adding some pda apps to this thing if its possible, i guess as long as it suports wince and the arm processor you can add anything. worth the 99$ imo at least for the tinkering value since this my first gps unit.

what's the size of the sd card do you use? Is the unit required the map sd card in order to run? can I insert another sd card to the gps for movie storage ?

I got one of 2 (All i saw was 2) at Loblaws College Square in Ottawa
I worked 12am-8am sat so I bussed over right away.
I had to fight with the guy for 4 min just to get him to scan it.
Me "Hi there, can I get a price check on that please?"
Him "Its 199 marked down from 299"
Me "Ok, but I herd it was 99$ at RCSS"
Him "Nope 199, Loblaws isn't the same thing as RCSS, we dont have the same prices"
(I'm thinking err, yah, you just happen to be owned by the same cooperation, have the same products, and on 90% or items have the same prices)
Me "Ok well sometiems your prices are the same, can you just scan it please?"
Him "Well I'm telling you, unless prices changed overnight, its 199, I put up the price tag myself"
Me "Scan it and Il buy it"
Him "Hmm, I guess prices changed over night"

I think my unit won't hold a charge. I tried plugging it in with the adapter and leaving it on to charge, also tried turnining it off and leaving it plugged in the AC adapter. I tried both of these ways for a couple of hours. I'm not sure if it was charging at all during this time, since there's no indication of charge, but when I try to power it without having it hooked up to a cigarette lighter or to the AC adapter, it does not turn on..

Are you sure the master power switch (located on the bottom left side) is on ?:?:

Sorry, I generated the map only for Ontario. I figured I only need that one for the short term, so why crowd up the memory with other crap I won't use. I'll load more as needed.

I just wanted to know everyone had the same map loader software problem that I have. I am trying to find out if there is different versions of the CDROM.

You don't have to save the map to the SD card, just generate it with the map loader program. You can save it your C drive.

If you map loader software is like mine, it will crash in the middle of generating it.

ok, I figured out how to play divx/mp3 on this unit.

1. run the gonav software, go to the menu screen and click on the "i" icon. it will take you to the system information page, click on the "Exit" button. it will close the software and display the empty desktop.

2. install activesync on your PC

3. connect the unit to PC via USB cable

4. open activesync and click on the "explore" button, then go into windows folder, create a short cut to explorer.exe and drag it to "desktop" folder, you will see a shortcut appeared on the unit

5. run the TCPMP setup program (dixv/mp3 player, tcpmp.corecodec.org), choose SDMMC as the destination, it will transfer a bunch of files to the unit. then click the middle button of the D-Pad on the unit to select the
destination folder.

6. double click the shortcut to launch the explorer. browse to \SDMMC\TCPMP folder, double click "player" to play

now I need to figure out a way to enter data. Is there a on-screen keyboard for winCE similiar to the Pocket PC's built-in SIP keyboard?

Thanks so much for the hacks you guys are figuring out. I did this one but when I run the player it freezes up? Any ideas? also seems I keep loosing the explore icon on my desktop?

I scewed up mine as well and ended up coping the old software from the cd.

I bought 2 units so I hooked the one I did not mess with and with activesync backed up the sdcard to my PC then put in the other unit and copied it back. Would not work with a reader only using activsync

Wrong File Version Data file:
linkinfo.bin: LI07 != LI08

I'm used to TomTom and I have a legit copy so I have the benefits of using both.

This is a Windows CE.net 4.2 device so it uses Pocket PC/Windows Mobile 2003 software.

Iguidance is fine as well.

The only thing you need to remember on this device is that you have to put everything on the SD card and run it from there. Nothing is saved when you do a hard reset. Shortcuts on the desktop aren't remembered, personalization of your windows is erased, etc. You can use the nscriptm to build a script to do this but you'll need to tinker with it.

You can have as many SD cards as you want, my tinkering has been on a 2GB SD card. You need to, at a minimum, copy the nk.bin from the CD/original SD card to the root directory, make a Netropa IntelliNav directory and rename an application to IntelliNav.exe to start at boot.

It seems you need to format the card as FAT (not FAT 32) as the file system or it won't boot. (My experience)

Great unit a bit of a delay as your moving, seems about 10m behind where your moving. The speed and distance are spot on though. I think I'll learn to use the unit before I start hacking it, making a back first of course.

I agree that if there is no headphone jack it will be useless for MP3/4. But you might be able to open the cover and fit a 3.5mm or 2.5mm jack there in between speaker wires (this voids warranty and I guess it might be mono instead of stereo, from the photo it looks like stereo speakers?). This looks like hardware hack instead of software hack:-(

Good luck:-)

it doesnt look that nice but its not like a cube that the garmin c300 series GPS are so you can carry it with you when strolling abouts.

Try finding ANY comparable GPS nav system for a $100....good luck...cause you will need it.

I have this and its pretty neat. Was running mp3s off it and playing divx pretty good. Cant complain cause its $100, the Garmin c320 I used is much better built/use but can not run divx/mp3 like this guy can and costs 3x more. And it works pretty good as a nav sys.

The mini USB plub on the unit does not charge thru the cig lighter, gotta go through the cradle.....dum design.

I am happy with my purchase too. Definitely a hot deal for $100. This is my first-ever GPS unit, so I'm not sure what is good vs. bad. The unit does seem just a little slow to realize when I need to do a turn off the street, etc. But, if you're watching the street signs and occassionally glancing at the screen to see the name of the street to make a turn, it's good enough for me. I am not sure if the slowness is just the nature of how the gps signal works, or if there is a correlation between slowness and the data processing capability of the unit.

I did also manage to test my unit in the downtown core surrounded by many many tall builds and the unit performs "ok". It did at times seem dis-oriented (for example, when the vehicle was stopped), but as soon as the vehicle was moving, the unit did quickly manage to orient itself again. The velocity measurement is very accurate, and I also like how it automatically (through a setting), switches from daytime to nighttime driving mode by changing the color of the screen. THe screen is also very readable in varying sunlight conditions.

In terms of having the program crash on me, it has happened twice now when I'm playing around with it at home (maybe I was navigating through the options menu too fast or something). Using it on the road, it has been up and running 100% with no problems.

I haven't tried loading more maps (or for that matter, generating more maps) yet. I think it should be quite straightforward though when I need to load more maps. I will probably not be hacking my unit as I have other devices for watching movies and listening to mp3's in the car. I may try the hacks if the maps get out-dated. However, by that time, there may be another hot deal on a newer GPS model. :)

Awesome deal. Bought 1 from RCSS in Newmarket. They had about 5 available when i was there on Saturday. Just had a chance to use it driving back from Huntsville, Ontario to Markham yesterday. Direction was good...and I'm extremely satisfied w/ it especially for $100. I was about to buy the Staples unit,...but glad i hold off and got this instead.

I'm new to GPS system..and I'm not sure how the maps gets updated.

Anyone that bought this figured out how to set the time? Mine seems to be an hour ahead...

I had the issue w/ Manitoba at boot up. Just change it to Ontario..and it worked.

And no..it does not come w/ USB cables. Says it is optional on the box.

Time with GPS units are set via the satellite link-up.

In the configuration screen you can select something about day light savings time (I think it says DST)....

EDIT: BTW, what is really nice about this unit is the speaker in the cradle. It is nice and loud. With my pocketpc solution I always had to keep the radio really low to hear it...

andreid, first you have to reset the system by pressing the reset button at the back. If it shows the italic Gonav for about 5 seconds then goes into regular Gonav with the green power light on, it is okay. Otherwise you have to reload the software into the SD card.

When zellers had thier $1 clearance on things like powerbars etc the girl there told me that the guy buying all thier stock said he was going to turn around and sell them at a flea market. I guess all the power to the guys doing it as its business but it would be nice if stock were limited on the really hot deals, ironic that places like future shop limit quantites on thier lame 'deals' and when a real deal comes along people can come in and scoop up all of em. I try not to be stupid and overbuy allthough this rfd thing is bordering on an addiction/sport, and when i leave something behind i inform others by posting location/quantity/condition info.

anyone have a lead on a unit in the GTA or surrounding areas?

I bought the last one but open boxed.

It is stuck on the Gonav italics screen. The SD card contains all the software.
Should I re-install the software or it is hopelessly defective? Thanks for the help...

I've got last unit from the display too, it also keeps getting stuck on the Gonav screen, probably because the SD card which came with this unit is empty (thanks to whoever screwd it up an returned to the store). But I didn't even get any installation CDs. Is there any minimal set of files I can copy to my SD card and at least boot into basic OS? Whould someone be willing to make an image of the system files so I could finally boot my unit up.

Cheers,

Andy

I can make you a full image of the sd card if you like. I could zip it up and out it on my server for download. You want the stock one or the one with divx player and screen rotate? You would need at least a 1gig sd for that

Damn you RFD another $115 well wasted! :) My dad picked up one too after finding out the price. :) Used it today...works ok for a GPS unit, but GREAT for a $99 GPS unit! :) (Crashed once so far, and freezes on the Gonav screen sometimes like others... (why???))

My cigarette lighter adapter is bad. Confirmed with a second unit I got my parents and all is fine. The adapter actually gets VERY hot and has a burning smell. I really want to keep this GPS, but need to power the cradle through car lighter....anyone know of an easy fix ???

U can pick u a pretty generic charger for this. I used my Blackberry car charger, it works. Just to Pacific Mall and pick up a cheap charger.

I found if you just try to copy stuff onto the sd card with a card reader it gets corrupted at least for me it does,,maybe its the $5.00 sandisk reader from Zellers? If I use activesync I dont have any problem. Remeber you have to format your sdcard fat not fat32 which xp defaults to.

I watched an episode of House today well driiving to the skihill on it. Spoke on the phone and had a coffee at the same time as well

Ok here they are:

www.kyra.ca/gpshack/gonavfactory.rar
www.kyra.ca/gpshack/gonavhack.rar

They are around the 230 meg mark.

The first one is what comes on the sdcard from the Factory.
The Second one has that on it but is set up to boot into Windows CE Explorer.

Has ScreenRotate.exe as well as TCPMP The Core Pocket Media Player

If you want to run the GPS from the hacked card go to Netropa IntelliNav and run runIntelliNav.exe

All you have to do is extract them to separate folders and then use activesync to transfer the files to the card on the gonav. The Card on the gonave will show up as SDMMC. Dont forget to format the card fat not fat32

I dont have much bandwidth so this is going to cost me some money. If anyone else can host them please let me know. I will only leave it up for a few days.

Let me know if it works.

Why not just break it up into 5 (or whatever parts so each are under 100MB) using winrar and post them to five Google Pages websites?

Might be easier than responding to everybodies PMs and it's free, unlimited, lifetime bandwidth.

If you need a google account PM me (when you create a gmail account you'll get a few invites in your mail account which you can use to re-invite yourself for the other accounts)

Split the archives 3 times and host them off of that. :) Hopefully that works for ya!

rapidshare is good and maybe what NG recommended might be also an option.

I was at RCSS Kanata store last night and they had only the display model, I noticed the price tag is the regular one, so I question the clerk and he said the price will stay at $100 for a while, and they expect some more by Thursday!!

I am still struggling whether to get it or not, as I am quite good driving around town and I can rely on google maps when going on trips.. besides, this unit doesn't seem to give you turn-by-turn voice directions, this sounds like a big deal to me... I need more positive reviews to justify!!

Yes, but I'd figure if somebody wants one as badly as i do they'd be willing to share the gas money i'd have to use to get it for them as there are none in the GTA. If it was local, i wouldn't ask, but since I'm wasting about half a tank of gas, i think it's fair if they want it to share the cost. I'm not trying to make money off the unit and I'm only buying them both because i know a lot of people on here want one.

If you live by larger Loblaws/Zehrs/Fortinos stores, some of them had them, however, I'm unable to check the price at this time.

It will probably never be stocked again as the last time any warehouse in Canada got them was in May.

This will work on any vehicle right? Doesn't it have to plug in somewhere?

I've never had a GPS on one of my vehicles before that's why I ask.

Don't know about the GVR thing (perhaps try calling around) but it'll work on any vechicle.

You don't need to plug it in since it has a built in battery but there is a dock that you can connect to it to be able to hook up a cig charger for extra power. You'll need to use this dock to use the car charger since the unit doesn't have a port for a cig charger (that and the no headphone jack are it's biggest faults imho).

As far as I understand this thing also can charge from a PC USB port. When I was trying to fix my unit I hooked up a car cradel to the PC using USB cable, a kind you would use with your MP3 player or digital camera, and the charge light on the cradel when on.

This is true - the parent poster was wrong. The unit has a mini-usb port right on it - you can charge the unit from your PC with OR WITHOUT the cradle.

Also, the cig. charger is a mini-usb port as well, so you can skip the cradle in your car too if you want.

Also - the unit has a built in speaker. The cradle speakers are amlified and larger, but not required.

In order to get enough space to install iGuidance 3, I am stupid and delete all date in SD card. What should I do? because that I don't have a card-reader to copy the original file back to the SD card.

I tried checking, but stock is updated on Saturdays. Its showing alot of stores have them, but after reading the posts I'm guessing its off. The only way to tell is when I check Monday.

If you live by larger Loblaws/Zehrs/Fortinos stores, some of them had them, however, I'm unable to check the price at this time.

It will probably never be stocked again as the last time any warehouse in Canada got them was in May.

I will post on Monday

Please check Montreal thanks!

You will need a card reader at this point. Its the only way. Activesyn will not be able to connect at this point. I would not bother with the files on the CD use the files I uploaded, the factory one or the hacked one. That version is newer than what is on the CD

activesynk would not recognize this unit until basic OS is loaded. You've got to get a card reader and copy at least a file with BIN extension to SD card, this is a boot loader as far as I understand. I had exactly the same problem, somebody just deleted all files from SD card and returned it back to the store. Just download an image provided by kamloops from www.11k.org put together by mizer and copy BIN file back to SD card.

Now, I have question. Is there a way to syncronize my schedule and contacts from MS Outlook with this unit. That would be really nice, a GPS + orginizer in one unit. Unfortunately I have no expirience with mobile devices other then PDA.

From the stores i called, they said since it's a clearance item, they will not get any more in stock. This was mentioned a few pages earlier. You will be very hard pressed to find one in the GTA but doesn't hurt to keep calling. I picked up the last 2 last night at one location.

In case if it runs out of battery or reset, the links might be gone for good. You can re-generate the links through ActiveSync. So I don't think that downloadable SD card image would get all the MP3/DIVX-Player/Rotatescreen/WindowsExplorer automatically before you run ActiveSync. This is a wonderful unit simply for its hackable Pocket PC/WinCE capability. The LCD is great and I finished watching 007 movie on it last night.

GTA folks, I got a spare unit from RCSS in a Kingdom of Far Far Away:-( This one was for my sister. But she decided not to take it since she does not drive lots. PM me *tonight* (meaning before Friday Jan. 5th) you can come to pick it up Friday if you are closeby. I have some questions for you people who use these units. Where do you keep them when you park your car?

I can't see it being very convenient to carry this whenever you leave your car. I would be be worried about theft, especially since it's just sitting there on the dash not attached to anything.

Anyone have any tips or stories?

Too bad you couldn't track your unit using GPS...lol

So, I found a unit today in Windsor RCSS, it was sitting behind the checkout in the electronics department. However, on the side of this, it says that the USB cable is optional, even though on the back it says it is included... well, mine does not have a USB cable, do I need this in order to use the unit, or can map and information data be loaded with a card reader? If I need one, can I use the one from my digital camera that is similar this the slot on this?
Also, was there supposed to be an actual instruction manual? Mine only had a french and english guide, much like a quick set up guide...

Any details would be greatly appreciated.

Full instructions are on the discs. Only basic sheets are in the box.

A standard usb mini cable like 1000's of cameras and mp3 players use is the type of cable it needs. Very common, can be bought anywhere or used from another device you own.

When you re-encode the Divx, just select POCKET PLAYER or POCKET VIDEO in the Divx encoding options.

This unit's CPU speed can't handle FULL SIZED videos you normally play on a TV or computer screen.

Hi, I've put the empty SD card into my Canon SD30 camera and connect the camera to the computer. However, it looks that I can only download the files from the camera, but NOT copy any file to the camera. Does anyone have experience to upload file to camera SD card? Thank you

I do find sometimes it locks up and has trouble finding a signal. If this happens which is rare, I just so a soft reset and it picks up the signal fairly quickly after that. It also keeps your destination so you don't have to enter it again.

that stylus was a real pain in the @ss, i almost thought it was a defective fit,
the 3 grip grooves were a joke to grasp onto, i found that using a swiss army knife (the can opener blade of the swiss army) works really well to get the stylus out

i think its made to piss off customers.

I thought you only charge this unit by plug in the docking port at the bottom. I tried usb data port but seems to me no charge.

Also the green LED is on if the unit is on. But if you push the power button (not th slide switch on the bottom) to turn off unit while charging, the LED is OFF. For this, I am confused since there is no way I would know it reaches full charge unless I turn into NAV function or go through control panel ... so are you sure the green LED is the charging indicator?

The green light on it is lit if it is charging.

>>Oh and how do you know if the unit is charging? Or fully charged. I had it plugged into the car lighter for about an hour, on my drive home and the battery on the screen shows full but I am sure it isn't!

If using the hacked version posted here, you can click on the battery button which will give you its state.

Auction style sale is not allowed on RFD. If you want to auction them, go eBay.

The fair price is only what you paid for it, plus compensations for gas and time to hunt them down.

I hope you didn't get the unit with the sole intention to make a profit. You got them because you heard about them on RFD. Then you turned around and tried to benefit off RFDers who couldn't get them because of you?

As much as I want one for my dad, I am not feeding a profiteer.

Let us know if you manage to load more maps. Several of us have reported difficulties.

Seems like impossible to *ADD* any maps into my SD card. I tried different OS/PC/SD-CARD and the only time I could have it done was when I either load Ontario *only* or just 2 or 5 maps *total*. Otherwise it just crashes:mad:

One message said after remove Southern California then it worked - wonder if only N California got loaded?

Any one has any luck or solution for this issue? thanks in advance

Have not tried the cigarette plug yet, but unit does not appear to charge over USB port from PC.

How long does your battery last? I can't use mine for more than a day on a charge, it lasts about an hour of straight usage, maybe little more.

The strange thing is in win ce it says there around 50% charge left, but the unit will start complaining about low battery and start shutting down.

Anyone else notice this too?

USB data port on this unit never would charge the battery. That's why on the packing box there is a USB Y cable BUT it relabelled as 'optional'.

From USB Mini plag, it might be able to charge the unit through the bundled dual-speaker docking station I guess?

Also notice the battery meter is not acurate enough and I had sudden death on the road even couple minutes before that I was more than half full on the green battery meter:-(

Not to question what you are doing, I think it's good you are helping people out who missed this deal, but shouldn't you be posting in the buy/sell forum instead of here?

I mean can't everyone who sees a good deal just pick up all the stock then post it here for a few bucks extra for "gas" money and make money this way? It's pretty obvious the "hot deals" forum gets the most trafic on this site, so I can understand why the mod's don't let people normally sell on the "hot deals" forum.

Again, I think it's good what you are doing and helping other rfds get in on a good deal, I'm just saying that's why the other user questioned what you are doing.

tonychouca,

How about you both read RFD rules and my post first before replying?

I did say a fair price includes compensations for gas and time to hunt them down, didn't I? If you drove 7 hours to get them, factor in the gas and time by all means. However, you cannot run an auction on RFD and you MUST post a price. While rules also say your post should be more appropriately posted in BST, I personally agree it is better to be posted in the same thread for people who want it.

JNW,

I am sure many have tried driving around looking for the unit just to find they are OOS because some individuals cleaned them out for a profit.

Let me tell you. I did visit several stores to look for it, not for myself, but for my father.

Again, I did mention it is fair to include gas and time in my post, didn't I?

From what I remember, your initial intention wasn't profiteering because it was bought for someone in your family. So my accusation of profiteering would not apply to you, but to the true profiteers. I was merely pointing out that it is against RFD's rules to have an auction-style sale, as implied in your PM.

To all,
Profiteering is profiteering, no matter how you try to glorify it.

I apologized already if you are indeed not profiteering, even before you posted, didn't I? If your intention was not to make a profit, why would my post bother you?

Enough of my ranting. Life moves on with or without a GPS system. :)

FYI, here are the related RFD rules:
Hot Deals: Post the hot deals you find here! This forum is not for the posting of private sales.
You MUST post a price for ALL For Sale (FS) and For Sale/For Trade (FS/FT) topics.
No auction style posts will be allowed. The posting of eBay links by themselves is prohibited. eBay links are allowed if the poster is willing to sell the item(s) to forum members at a specified, POSTED price.

First of all, Canada wholesaler are not planning to let us update the software or try to make the money on us. It also prevent us abuse the device. Actually it comes with it from factory. I will try to talk to the wholesaler (RGC groups) in Canada. That cable suppose to charge the internal battery with two power lines connected (no connections on the others). The reason say it does charge with the car charger cable is because it does not sit there long enough for charging. The problem is happened on no indication. If they modify either the software or hardware by using the power light flashing to tell it is charging now and fully charged light solid.
The people using the cradle must be carefull, only start up the car first before insert into the cradle, it will prevent the damage of the device.:cheesygri

from what i read here, the staples one seems better, but this one is much cheaper

The Mio C310SX (from Staples or Costco) has these advantages:

- Faster processor (400 MHz vs. 266 MHz)
- Built-in 512 Mbytes flash drive
- Screen with more colour resolution (65K colours vs. 26K colours)
- Slimmer case
- stereo headphone jack and built-in MP3 player software
- iGO nav software with more functions than the version of Intellinav software included with the Gonav

But the Gonav has:

- 512 Mbyte SD card included
- more control buttons (handy for other hacked software)
- More powerful speaker on cradle
- and the big one: it uses Navteq maps which are generally considered better than the TeleAtlas maps included with the Mio

Otherwise the two are very similar.

Both are very flexible WinCE-based units that can be easily hacked to perform other PDA functions and run other nav software. Mio has a more active online user support community because it has been sold widely in Europe for some time.

Overall the Gonav is an amazing deal for $99, and there's nothing wrong with it as a car nav system. The Mio C310SX cost at least twice as much, even during the Boxing Week sale at Staples.

It's frozen on highway 39 in Manitoba (I live in Ontario) - all of the other menu buttons work - but it just refuses to find any GPS signals - I tried a soft reset, hard reset etc but nothing works - has this happened to anyone else - any ideas ?

many thanks in advance

Have you tried taking a drive with it? Mine picked up the sat signal once I hit the road and started driving.

Try to drive 'cause somehow unit could still try to figure out which direction you are heading at the moment so it can tell you to do 'U' turns or something else. Also make sure the unit 'sees' the sky aka=sat.

If it still not getting signal after reset... then the unit is not good.

Let me know if you figure anythign out. I picked one up for my brother and it seemed to work fine when I tested it out of the box but he said he was driving with it yesterday and got the same problem (never picked up any statelites after about 10km and 10-15 minutes of driving I think).

I have this unit from 10 days now and i have no problem with, and it was the demo unit. I do some trips around Montreal and all works great, today i do a trip to Ottawa and i never lost signal, i just put an adress in Ottawa and that it. I always wait 3-5 minutes when i start the unit to get the satellites signal and when is done i start driving. I am very happy with my unit

haven't had this unit for too long but besides the screen freezing on occasion while i'm fooling around with it at home, no issues at all while driving. For $99 I am very happy with this unit and all my friends want one also.

OK.. listen up FOR THOSE WHO BOUGHT THIS ITEM AND DOESNT THINK THE GPS SIGNAL WORKS

heres a solution that might help you

LEAVE the gps IN UR CAR outside
cause basically what the gps system does is from the last point of usage
mine was manitoba to where i live in bc. it takes a couple minutes to an hr to relocate the sattelites
so leave it in ur car powered on and check back in a few minutes
if it has changed positions after 5 hours well then u do have a problem
but if it has bingo it works :)
so before u return this gem try it and then wait on it..

I was playing around with my unit today and entered the destination of Halifax, Nova Scotia from toronto (not really going, just trying it out) and although I have ferries enabled in the setup section, it told me that the area is not reachable. Im wondering if this is just a general software flaw or is it limited to my unit. I hope that I never need to go to the maritimes and rely on this unit.

Did you make sure all the maps for that route are loaded?

I had a bit if a similar issue, where I tried to enter a destination in NY state from here, and it said no route, even though I had loaded the whole US eastern seaboard. I simply did a soft reset (power off/on) on the keypad and it immediately came back up with full 'connection' to sats. It's good to mention that I was actually moving at the time and it was able to lock-in while moving (I wasn't sure if you had to initially find the sats from a stand-still).

I've also noticed it freeze on me when I pressed the 'i' for information on the settings page (nothing seemed to respond after that and I had to do a hard reset (switch on the bottom of the unit)).

Overall, I'm still extremely pleased with it for the price.

Thanks to everyone who responded to my problem - still no progress unfortunately - I mounted it on my windshield and drove for a couple of days - the screen is still stuck on highway 39 in Manitoba - even after a choose another destination in Ontario - it did seem to work for a day - tried all the reset options (hard, soft) - all the other menu options and buttons work - when I check the GPS info - there are no bars telling me that it is trying to track satelites.

-When I try to load Canadian maps and multi US maps from the CD's, the loader crashes with "Internal error, call support" or "this program perform illegal operation"

- In regards to the mute thing, if I loaded the original SD software from the CD, then the mute button is the Down arrow, but with the version on the SD card that was shipped with the unit, the down arrow will toggle 3D off/on.

Geez, still can't get it to pick up a satelite signal (other than the first day when it worked fine) - I drove around, did a soft reset, hard reset, etc. When I check the GPS Info page, it doesn't show any SAT information like it's suppose to according to the manual (the SAT info - number of satelites it's tracking) should be below the SPD info - but my case, the SAT is totally missing - this might explain it - anyone else have this problem (missing SAT info) ?

When you boot it up, and it shows that street in Manitoba, enter the destination where you are located and hit MAP to get it to go there - or try entering the destination as the place where you are - sometimes the signal picks up more effectively when it does not think you are 3000kms from that street in Manitoba.

I don't want to say this, but I think you might have a defective unit. If after doing all those things and it still can't pickup the signal, then that's what I would have to assume. I believe that usually after a cold reset (eg. all power off and then back on again), it should only take a few minutes to pick up the signal. On a warm reset, it should be able to pick up the signal in a minute or less.

For those wondering about finding a unit for sale I'm starting to wonder if these will be coming back in stock (at the reg $199 price tag).

Some people here have said they've been told it'll be restocked and I was told when I bought mine that the 14 day refund applied if I didn't like it and the tag on the shelf didn't have that "DNO" text on it like everything else final sale I've seen at Superstore.

My GoNav routes me flawlessly from Southwestern Ontario to any point in Michigan ? So that is international ........it's either bridge, tunnel or ferry for crossing access to Michigan from Southwestern Ontario ....so maybe it depends on the locations of the international boundaries between Canada/US as to how or if it will "navigate" ?

When using POI features, it actually shows various POI's for Michigan (hopsitals/restaurants/schools etc) when I am within a 25 mile distance from the Michigan/Ontario border...which I usually am. :?:

Actually NG...the regular price on the GoNav units at my RCSS about 6 weeks ago were $399.99 !! I felt the original regular price was way, way over priced.

It was only about 3 weeks ago the price dropped to $199.99 and then finally to the great price of $99.98 !!

I'd think about trading if you were in Vancouver. I'm pretty much done playing with mine, and thinking about selling it... seeing I don't have a car here in Vancouver (I bought it while on vacation and had access to a car). I used it all over St. John's, worked great.

$99.98 deal is confirmed dead. Found a second unit at St Albert RCSS today, scanned at $199.98. Only way to get it cheaper is if they still have the old tag up.

Make your own *.bmp file, name it GoNav.bmp and replace it in \Windows\
Tocheck if everything Ok: go to MyComputer, then Control and then to Display Properties.

That is extremely cool...just curious, was that difficult to do? I'm going to try to fool around with my unit maybe tonight and see what happens, would it be recommended to maybe purchase a larger card (2 gig or so)??

I bought one and have decided to return it. It is like new, but I like my Pocket PC + Iguidance better.

If you're interested PM me and for a reasonable price I would package it up and mail it to someone instead of returning it (I would provide original receipt for warranty).

I'll give you retail cost + shipping.

I should point out that $199.98 is still one of the best deals around at the moment for a car nav system, though $99.98 was an amazing deal.

Maybe the title of the thread should be changed to "...199.98" rather than "...[Dead]"

Does it come with the following like MIO C310?
USB Cable, In-Car charger, Map DVD, Device Holder, Mount.

At $100, the GoNav is a hell of a deal, but at $200, my recommendation is the Mio. The Mio feels, looks and functions much nicer. It also has a better screen (more colours) and a faster CPU.

I had both units at the same time few weeks ago, but I decided to return the GoNav and kept the Mio as I found it more suitable for me. The one thing that I wish the GoNav should have (which is the main reason why I got rid of it) is a head jack. With it, you can much more uses out of it such as to connect to your car stereo (if you have a audio input), use a bluetooth headphones (one w/ bt dongle), use regular head/earphones, or connect to a FM transmitter.

Sorry, you've lost me. This is a dash mount GPS - why would I want to use headphones with it? I don't see why you'd ever want to do that - you should never wear headphones while driving, in fact it's against the law in a lot of places since they block out sirens.

And why would I want to connect it to my car speakers when it has a perfectly powerful amplified built in speaker in the mount? If I had it plugged into the stereo I couldn't listen to music at the same time as hear the directions. I can hear both fine with the GoNav, even with my music cranked almost to the max - the GoNav is plenty loud.

And as far as the functions - if you like the Mio's software better, just put it on the GoNav. Theyre both running the same OS. I already have mine upgraded to iGuidence 3.0 and also have Fugawi GPS on it for off road stuff. It's a piece of cake.

Although I love my Gonav, I have to admit that is the biggest issue I find as well. The other things that bother me is the short battery life, can't charge through usb, almost non existant POI and no onboard flash to save anything.

Still a great deal for the price. I also had the Mio and found the Gonav navigation to be more accurate. Also the Mio had no home adapter charger only usb charger, no case and no stylus.

Since they are both hackable, both are good units. I mainly kept the Gonav because I am going to use a GPS as a GPS, and the more accurate navigation made the biggest difference for me. Too bad there just isnt more POI like the Mio.

Edit : Anyone know of good mapping software for Hong Kong for this thing? I hope to take a trip in the next year and this would be handy. Thanks

I'd like to say thanks for the overwhelming response I've received for my shell setup. Even some offers of money! I'm still not complete with it. I'm going to do some scripting to autoload settings on boot up. This should make it even easier to use.

I wanted to make the Gonav easy to use with it's full potential. I don't intend to carry it around with me much, so I chose applications that are free to use, simple and can be used in the car with fingers, rather than the stylus (when possible). For that reason, I made extra large icons on the shell so you can see what each one does and use your finger to select while in the car (stopped, of course!)

To give you an idea:

Media player - This one require stylus and even a soft keyboard for certain features.
Picture viewer - Simple, view in slideshow with fingers and hard buttons.
Clock/calendar - Big display of the current time in digital/analog with current calendar month. Also functions as an alarm clock.
Calculator - Use fingers again to crunch numbers (has memory features too).
Memo - No need for a soft keyboard. Quickly jot down notes while in the car (it records like you write with a pen).

(if you'd rather not use the provided stylus while in the car, a rounded bottom of a pen works just fine - don't worry, the Gonav comes with a factory screen protector on it)

I did not write any of the applications. They are available all over the net for free download. The trick is spending time finding ones that will work on the Gonav. For instance, ones that work in the landscape mode and don't require screen rotation...easy to use with fingers...compatible with wince 4.2...missing .dlls...etc.

For those who wanted instructions: I got started looking at the Mio thread. However, for customizations to work on the Gonav, though not difficult, do require familiarity with computer software. My setup requires only 5MB of space, not including the GPS software w/maps. If you're looking for a SD card, you'll need 5MB+GPS software w/maps+pics/music/videos. So the size depends on what you intend to store on it.

Unfortunately, since some of the applications have licenses (even though they are free to download and distribute in it's original form), I'm not permitted to distribute the applications in the form of my SD card image. I, will, however post instructions on how to do my setup along with downloads of the actual shell program (no license) with my configurations & scripts. You'll need to be familiar with computers somewhat. I'll do this by the weekend :)

Awesome! Thanks .EE. I initially wasn't go try hacking mine, but your screenshot and description looks so good that I'm going to give it a try when FS delivers my SD card that I ordered on Boxing Week! Looking forward to giving this a go. Hopefully, it's not 'too' complicated as I've never done any windows programming.

There's no programming involved actually unless you want to automate a few things using scripting program such as MortScript or noscript. Most of it is putting the System Information v1.2 shell program files on your SD and modifying the text ini files in a text editor to direct the System Information program to where your files (i.e icons, script files, ini, program executable file) directories are located. Then just trial and error on the x and y placement of your icons on screen.

This was posted by Torowl in the Mios hacking thread on this site at http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=384938&page=16&highlight=mio+hackhttp://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=384938&page=16&highlight=mio+hack. Browse to message #230 to download his shell package and read the posted information in that message to tweak it the way you want. You will still need to locate applications for the icons though. There was a post on gpspassion in their french forum that actually had links to download already to use System Information v1.2 skins and all of the application for the Mio but can easily be modified to run on the GoNav S600A unit. I been hacking this unit for too many hours so I currently don't have the brain cells due to lack of sleep at the moment to recall that link. I will post it when I can locate it again. Have fun.

Hi guys ,i bougth my gonav s600a @ a superstore in ville st-laurent on marcel laurin = Maxi on the 8th of february 2007,they had 1 left but box was torn up they gave me it but i haggled it down by 15 % from 100.00$ ,i took it home and realized the suction cup wasnt there ,the manager is giving me the run around that he cant get any accessories and at the same time there was another s600a in a pouch that they forgot but after trying it out it jams and i have to reset it ,my question is where can i find that suction cup holder or a equivalent that will do the job to fit the casing that the gps sits in thanx in advance

There is a company Supa-tech that is handling software issues right now for them, you can see if they are dealing with hardware as well, other than that, check Audiovox's site and see if they have accessories for sale, or as a last resort, ebay!

I'm guessing it's too late to get this little unit now is it? Anyone willing to sell it to me theirs at superstore price?

well you could always go buy one in another store and return it without the suction cup. Thats a good price they are 289 in my home town.
