Subject came up tonight, most of my family/friends just simply don't care for it, nothing to do with price, quality...just simply think it's unnecessary! LOL

Gosh, who'd want to watch static nowadays? :D

Just got me a 360 and was looking at some of the HD movies out there. I want Batman Begins so bad, also V for Vendetta and Serenity are great movies as well. However I'm too poor for the HD attachment and for a HD T.V. For now I'll have to play on my LCD monitor until I can afford a HD TV. Thankfully they seem to be coming down in price pretty quickly.

I have an HDTV, but mainly for my 360. But for tv, i dont watch enough to warrant getting Bells HD receiver - so just have the SD one. I dont care...because it would be a waste of money for me.

Bought a new HDTV LCD from Future Shop recently .. finally got the free included Rogers starter kit and signed up for the free 10 months of HD programming w/ HD PVR rental (requires basic digital cable). Now waiting for my HD PVR to arrive in the mail .. i'm finally moving to high definition! :)

I want real HD programming first on cable/satellite.

For some HD stuff, might as well, spend on a little antenna and get those.

Plus, got a RCA 52" Projection from back in the days, it works perfect. so why change it!

Your kidding right?

BTW, for Roger's, if you have basic cable and Ultimate TV package, HD channels only cost a couple bucks more.

I use to be a anti HD person myself until i got it. I only watch 500 and up (HD channels) now.

The programming still sucks. At least if we had some movie channels...

The only HD channels worth watching is like Discovery and that's it.

I have Rogers HD but I rarely watch the channels.

the reason why i am still sticking with my CRT is becos the one that I am using still works fine..... money issue is another thing. Sooner or later, everyone will use HDTV, it takes time .

I just got expresvu HD installed. Its great but then you realize there is not much programming. Alot of eye candy type of shows with lots of mountain peaks and women in bikini's, but even on many of the HD channels, the shows are still in SD and not in widescreen so I gotta keep playing with the aspect ratio.

But it is the future for sure. And watching sports is a MUST.

Does expressvu use compression for HD broadcast?

Anyhow, I asked for a deal for a current subscriber, they gave me 1 year contract with 6 months free programming.

If the channels don't expand in their programming I might not renew and just go OTA instead.

Nothing wrong with that. Some people just dont watch TV or enough to warrant a HD signal. My bro has a $8000 HT setup and doesnt have any cable at all.

Bought a 32" LCD HDTV from last years boxing day, and came with the free 12 months of Rogers HD channels whatever.

I only watch the HD channels for Raptors TV, Prison Break, Heroes, and whatever else Fox offers over HD. Everything else is garbage.

Not buying a HD-DVD player until the prices drop dramatically.
Just watched Spider-Man 1 last night on HD, and I do have to admit it looked pretty good even on my crap LCD TV.

No, I'm not kidding. It's not like I watch TV more than 1-2h per day anyway.

There's lots of good programming now, tonnes of sports and most of the primetime line-up. But some people just don't care. A 20" CRT is good enough to them. Not me though, I'm a tech and gadget freak. :cheesygri

You're right, TONS of sports. That's like the only thing that's avaliable on HD right now.. with the occasion of a few 5 year old movie reruns of course. It was great while FIFA was on, but I don't watch basketball or hockey, which means I'm wasting my time now. Really want Canada to have more HD channels...

I also said primetime line up. :) So lots of the series aired from 8-11 on the major networks. (Lost, Heroes, etc) TMN and Moviepix are also available in HD.

CP24 is in HD since a few months ago. The quality of the city channel in HD (news) is much much better then discovery.

The only reason I'd get an HD set would be to connect to the computer. I download whatever shows I want to watch, much more convenient than cable, and no commercials. However, price still isn't as low as I'd like, maybe next year.

I'm not all too impressed with HD in the mainstream. HD programming on CBS, et al fall short for some reason. HD documentaries like those snippets featured on Microsoft's site shows marked improvements. Those are what I would like to see flood the mainstream channels.

Came very close to picking up the HD DVD add on for the X06 but no currently available movies has caught my eye.

I would love to have HDTV but I just can't afford it. I need to buy the TV, the surround sound package and then I can consider it. I don't even have cable tv because I get so pissed off at my 21" tube TV. Heck I have triple Dell 20.1 Widescreens on my desk but still no decent tv.

For an extra $20 or so per month I can get 5 or so HD channels, or I can watch the SD version and have an extra $240(+tax) per year. A little blacker black here and a little smoother there is not worth it to me. I have watched TMN HD (on a Plasma TV), and it looks almost identical to the non HD version (on a SD TV), and in some cases, looks worse in the HD (too dark to see properly)

I can see a lot of people not wanting to go out and spend $2,000 on a television, when you can get a good standard TV for $500.
Some people are content with the standard and I have Bell ExpressVu and the picture still looks great to me (there's no static).

TV is just boring no matter how clear the picture is. How much TV are people watching to justify spending thousands? Or is it just another status symbol?

I have basic cable so I don't care for the HD tv. Worse - I got hurt and have been in my parents place. They have bell Express with lots of channels - movies etc. I have flipped through all their frickin channels but there's nothing on ... who wants to spend an money to get a high quality picture of the same garbage.

I got the 360 but I am not overly interested in spending more money to play the game in a better quality.

If our tv burns out, I will look at buying a good tv. My parents' tv is going and they are looking for one that lasts. They do not care or understand HD, etc.

That about sums it up for me. If the industry was spending money on better content they would hook me a lot faster than with better picture quality.

We bought an HDTV this past Spring and I must say that the difference in picture quality compared to SDTV is almost like night and day. Those that say that they don't see much of a difference are probably watching a non-hd show on a HD channel. Those type of broadcasts offer virtually no difference in picture quality. However, when properly broadcasted show like Heroes, Prison Break, 24, etc are shown in HD, then are you able to see the difference.

Also, CP24 is NOT being shown in HD only CityNews, Breakfast TV, and the noon news are.

I am not willing to look past the way 16:9 ratio TVs make a 4:3 ratio picture look like a$$. Most 16:9 TVs themselves don't really have a good picture and people that buy them are still remembering the HDTV demo they saw, but ignore the crappy pics from 4:3 sources. If I am going to get one, it will most likely be a Pioneer Elite, or a Panasonic Industrial panel plasma. I like the HD DVD, but don't like the cost with the possibility that the format may change, or that movie makers may be able to limit the resolution coming from the component ports. Money is not an issue as I can get everything at cost.I still love the picture from my 29" Toshiba tube television.

I'll jump on that bandwagon when the technology is perfected.

I dont see a point in paying all that extra money for a dozen or so HD channels; which from what I hear from friends who have Rogers HD, screw up all the time.
Hell, even my digital box crashes every other time I want to use on demand.

When its standard on the vast majority of channels AND it actually works, I'll go HDTV. Until then, its still "gimmicky."

I just got all the HD channels yesterday through Rogers. I had previously only been getting the basic HD channels because I bought an HD terminal.

Now that I can watch CSI in HD on Showcase and A&E, we're in business! Discovery HD is pretty cool too.

I will actually be getting HD cable next week, but my biggest motivation to jump to HD was my Xbox 360. I don't watch that much tv, only a few shows, and of those that I watch the only one I really care to watch in HD is Lost. So it was really playing games in HD, and the fact that the cost of a good qualtiy HDTV has come down.

I also just got the HD-DVD add on for my 360 and I would find it kind of hard to go back to SD once experiencing a high quality HD source.

I also think that my job has probably made want to get an HDTV. We do broadcast design, so 90% od the work we do is HD content. I can really compare HD to SD, so knowing how much better HD looks, and the fact I can afford it and i can make good use of the technology, then why not.

Also, I just moved into a condo, so space is a little tight, so going for a flat screen made sense.

Dec 27th, 2006, 07:00 PM
what the heck am I gonna watch on it?

Really

I almost never watch a movie more than once anymore. There are only a couple of TV shows that I watch a week, and they aren't available in Canada until a year or more after they air elsewhere (US/UK) so I download them. Watching them on the PC is easier, they aren't in HD anyway (too big).

The only reason I can think of is for next-gen (well current-gen now) consoles, but there isn't a game out there that I really want to play yet.

My parents just got HDTV + Plasma. Looks sickkkk. The reason I don't have HDTV is because i don't care for TV. In fact i haven't had one in 3 years while away at school. All the shows i watch i just download and watch on the ol' 2005FPW + Z5500.

The lack of quality programming makes it a bit price prohibitive, so I can understand why half the people here don't care for it.

But then again I'm the dumbass that paid for NHL Centre Ice, and only watch one non Leaf game a week roffle.

There are some good prime time shows that are on HD though, 24, Prison Break, CSI, Desperate Housewives etc...

However, if you DO have the time, and your favourite shows are available in HD. The extra $5 or so a month (assuming you have a 32" or greater HDTV), it's well worth it.

HD still needs work or something. CBC-HD (HNIC) looks like crap compared to HDNet for hockey... and those American's don't even really like hockey. And there are some channels with sound syncing issues as well. It's a a big mess at times but I think it's still worth it to me.

I'd love to, but I live in a condo and can't put in a satellite dish, and in my area Shaw only offers 2 HD channels. There's no way I'm buying one of their HD units for 2 channels.
I'm moving in a couple months and will most likely get a satellite dish.

To me, HD makes a HUGE difference compared to SD. For those who say they can't tell the difference, perhaps they're watching on a smaller screen from a greater distance. At the proper viewing distance, HD vs SD is like night and day.

Another aspect of HD that hasn't been mentioned is that many programs are broadcast in Dolby 5.1 sound. This makes a noticeable difference to most programs.

Bah. Unless you need premium content, HD is free with a $20 Terk HDTVi antenna. Fox, Sun, CBS, Global... etc. Yes, hockey night is high-def and FREE! Seriously though, anything else I watch I just download. Prison break? Download AC3 hi-def and watch at leisure. I cannot justify even basic cable. Free news HDTV over the air plus 'premium' tv shows downloaded in hi-def is all you need.
