View Full Version : "Controls Lag/Delay" in CS 1.6

Just recently my CS has been acting up. Once in a while my controls (keyboard and mouse) when I move or aim will take a while before it actually does it. For example, if I'm running straight and I try to turn left, it will have a half second to full second delay before it changes direction.

I haven't done anything different or changed any settings in the game. My computer has been running fine and I even reformatted just because of this but it's still happening. I've tried 4 different versions of Catalyst drivers (6.8-.10 and 6.12). My internet has been back to it's old fast self (nearing 5mbits download during peak hours). I have also disconnected and reconnected hardware (video card, memory, router, modem) and nothing has worked.

Anyone know what it is? Hardware? Software? A setting in the game or elsewhere?

You should see if it does it with different input devices.

Does it lag in any other games? To be on the safeside, did you scan for spyware/adware/viruses yet? Are they usb devices or ps/2? Could be an acting up usb port.

The weird thing is that everything is fine with other games. I played UT2k3 or 2k4, NFS Most Wanted and StarCraft and all games don't lag and even outside of games the input devices don't lag so if it was the input devices, wouldn't they lag there too?

I remember having that problem too and even before steam. For me, I think it was a fps issue. But my problem was consistent until I fixed it, not on and off. Try disabling the v-sync option on your video card settings and see if that helps. Maybe lowering the game's resolution to 800x600 will help if you are using a higher resolution.

I have vsync off. My card is more than enough to run the game at 100 fps constantly. I tried different drivers and have went through all settings from performance to quality. My resolution though shouldn't be an issue. I've been playing on the same resolution for years.

Are you using ventrilo or teamspeak? I used to have those exact problems because of voice chat.

Sounds a little weird. Is your keyboard/mouse wireless? Maybe it's getting interference from somewhere. If they're not wireless, have you tried another keyboard or mouse to see if the problem still happens?

Nope. I rarely even use my mic and when I do, it's not through other programs outside of CS. (I stopped using vent when I left CAL all those years ago)

My keyboard and mouse connect through cord (PS/2). I put them in the other computer and it's fine.

I'm starting to think it might be something to do with the game but not sure what.

2500? That's really low. I use anywhere from 20k-25k

i used to have this problem too... but it would intermittently come and go....

does the problem happen on all servers? on all maps? does it lag all the time or just when you're going for fast movements?

i never really did figure out what the problem was... i switched to playing cs:s and it never happened playing there

It would happen everytime I play but intermittent during play that it would be every 30s it would do it. I tried on a few servers with the same result.

Well taking into consideration the fact that you said you reformatted your computer and did a fresh install of CS 1.6 from Steam then I would definitely try out a different mouse and keyboard on your current comp. Otherwise it might be your motherboard/PS/2 ports which are having problems.

I hope not. They don't make my board anymore and it would take forever to RMA it. There's no DFI in Canada.

I'm still thinking it might be the ATI drivers, DirectX or .NET Framework that are some possible suspects.

.NET has nothing to do with it. That's just a compiling platform.

Yeah well you never know. It is required for ATI Catalyst though. Maybe I'll roll-back drivers some more.

Disable ATI Hotkey Poller service. When I had my X800 GTO2, I had the same problem in CS and The Ship.. ie: any Source engine game. Turns out Steam has issues with ATI Hotkey Poller on some video cards.

With my X1900 though, I have not experience this at all and ATI Hotkey Poller is running.

What Video card do you have? Keep in mind disabling the service for the X1800/X1900 series will disable the auto core/memory speed switching for 2d/3d applications.

There is a Steam techsupport article on this, but I can't access the Steam website from work, so can't point you to it. If you go through the Steam techsupport though, you should run into it.

Switch from DirectX to OpenGL. Let me know if it works, I used to have this problem, but not a half second lag.. but definately noticeable.

Yep.. turn off ATI Hotkey Poller in services. I was using an X800 GTO2 with the bios from an X850XT PE.. though PCI-E version, but it should behave the same.
