View Full Version : Is it "impolite" to drive on the highway with hi-beams on? (Poll updated)

Dec 21st, 2006, 04:29 PM
Hey RFD,
I was wondering if driving on the highway with hi-beams will blind people the opposing traffic or the cars in front of you on their mirrors? Or do people regularly use high-beams on the highway? I've heard two conflicting sources of info so I thought I would clarify.

Driving with highbeams on anytime traffic is coming at you or you're behind someone is stupid, dangerous, annoying, impolite and illegal.

As with the 2 above, it's an offense under the Ontario HTA for failing to lower high beams to oncoming traffic. It'll get you a fine and a good few dermit points.
BTW, your poll question is flawed. Of course you can drive on the highway with high beams, but when there's oncoming traffic you must lower them.

As long as there is no oncoming traffic, yes, it is fine. If there is oncoming traffic, switch to low beams

DEFINITELY DANGEROUS!!!
Cars with hi-beams towards me blind me, cars with hi-beams behind me blind me as well through the mirror.
Never use hi-beams unless absolutely necessary, and only for brief moments.

I've only used high beams really late at night when I'm driving on some highway (usually minor highways) when no one else is around. The only other time is that I'll sometimes flash them when I'm trying to signal someone like giving them the right of way, etc.

Take the person who thinks this, and go to a remote location. Turn your highbeams on and drive towards them and show them what it does to his night vision.

I don't want to be "impolite" myself with this answer, but it's a no-brainer.
After a particularly bad day, I was once forced to get out of my car and ask the knucklehead behind me with his high beams on what the problem was. He, like many, do it to p*** you off. Fortunately, this wasn't a mistake on my part (he was shrimp and not a gun toting ganster), and he apologized profusely... the steam coming out of my ears may have had something to do with that.

I'm the guy who brakes when you tailgate and hi-beam. So far, it's always gotten them to either turn them off, or change lanes. I like to pull up next to someone slow and then match their speed. Just because I'm in front of you, and I can.
And I'm glad to see that many of those yes votes should be no. That makes me feel much better.

Hahaha you're one of those vengeful drivers! Mind you, this is different from the road ragers. When I do the same braking and high-beam thing, I never get a response. I hate drivers who don't use their turn signals because that's so obviously dangerous. A lot of drivers also don't realize that they have to use their turn signals any time they're not following a relatively straight path of the road, i.e., turning onto a main street at the exit of an off ramp.

How anyone can even get a beginner's license without knowing the answer to this question is appalling.
Even more saddening is to read the Ontario Trucking Association's recommendation (http://www.dsao.com/drivingtip.cfm?tipno=11) of lowering within 150m of oncoming traffic, and 60m if approaching from behind.
That being said, if there are no other vehicles within 300m or so USE THEM. The extra reaction time you'll get from the reflection in the eyes of any wildlife you may encounter could save your life.
Lastly, if you have any uncertainties about how to drive at night, I implore you to please simply NOT DRIVE at night at all!

Use hi-beams when needed, especially in harsh weather conditions...
On highways, I have no problem with people using hi-beams, because everything moves so fast that I couldn't careless...Unlike in the city, the opposing traffic is far away from you so they won't affect you...If you can FEEL the light, it is a sign that either you or the person with the hi-beams on should move to other lanes...
BTW...I HATE THE PEOPLE WHO SUDDENLY BRAKES IN THE HIGHWAY FOR NO APPARENT REASON (no cars in front of them)! Those are the people that cause the most accidents on the highway!

While some may have superpowers and can drive without being able to see the road, the hi-beam law is there to ensure us regular folk don't die. Oncoming high beams, even 4 or 5 lanes over, can be quite blinding. Even moreso in bad weather when light reflects and scatters across a windshield.

Acutally, you're not supposed to use highbeams in fog and snow storms because it actually impairs visibility even further.

hahaha. good one, but the damn question got me. I read the thread title, and the blurb he posted then voted yes. I was utterly surprised to see the Yes's loosing so I re-read the title on top of the poll and it all became clear.
The only time I use hi-beams on the hiway is when I'm up North. When I was in Timmins over the summer driving too and from work I had to use my beams. But everybody was wise enought o turn their beams off once you saw opposing beams coming at you. The hiways up there don't have any lighting so you actually need them. Don't want to run into any animals after all.

Daytime or nighttime?
If it's during the day, there's not much difference between high beams and low beams.. some DRL systems use the high beams on a lower setting, so that you don't have your low beam system on all the time.(less burned out low beam bulbs)

Dec 23rd, 2006, 01:20 PM
Is this poll even necessary? It's COMMON SENSE. It's pretty obvious that highbeams can blind the oncoming traffic. High beams are useful for more rural areas, but you're supposed to turn them off when there are cars approaching, then turn them back on after the cars have passed. If you've ever been blinded by high beams, you'll know how bad it is, because your eyes have to accomodate first to bright light, then back to low-light again.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't it illegal to use high beam on any expressways? With, or without incoming traffics.
Out in the boonies (ie out of Toronto) where the roads have little to no illumination often you will need high beams to drive.
From the Highway Traffic Act:
"Use of passing beam
168. When on a highway at any time when lighted lamps are required to be displayed on vehicles, the driver of a motor vehicle equipped with multiple beam headlamps shall use the lower or passing beam when,
(a) approaching an oncoming vehicle within 150 metres; or
(b) following another vehicle within 60 metres, except when in the act of overtaking and passing. R.S.O. 1990, c. H.8, s. 168."
So in times where situations a and b are not occurring, you can legally use your highbeam (passing beam).

Yes it is impolite driving with your highbeam headlights on to oncoming traffic. It's ok to have them on when there is no traffic around facing you but the minute traffic is heading your way lower your headlights as it is very impolite and dangerous to you and the other driver of the vehicle. It can cause a serious accident because where the highbeam lights where in both drivers eyes that you couldn't see anything and collided. As other members pointed out its also illegal to drive with your highbeam lights on.:)
