You might see the first generation HD-DVD players on sale or bundled with movies as Toshiba is/will soon be coming out with new versions

Don't know about that, the first month Toshiba came out with the HD-A1 HD DVD for $699.99. Using my "RFD Skills" LOL I managed to get it for $572.99.
kevin01, I think it's the usual 10%...we've seen them several times this year. Get them now with GC Savings or order them at amazon.com with the 10% off. Why wait?

Yeah, the only deals in the pipeline are probably save 10% off titles at BB and FS - which only means the prices are then about the same as Amazon.com.... I'm not planning on grabbing a bunch of HD DVDs on boxing day, but I'll place a fair sized Amazon order after I see which titles I get for Xmas...

Or if I somehow wind up with a PS3.

a little premature, don't you think?
i'm not turning this into a blu-ray vs. hd-dvd war, as i'm on the fence about the whole thing myself, but i have read a good chunk of info about both, and there seems to be just as many things going for hd-dvd as there is for blu-ray...
i will say though that i'm antsy about getting in on the next-gen dvd bandwagon because i've seen both formats in action, and the movies look breathtaking for both of them...

Studios are going to crack and do both until one format dies or falters in market share. They want royalties and sales from their movies and they know consumers would buy em.

At the moment, only Paramount and Warner are neutral in the format war and are supporting both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. Everyone else is (for the moment) committed to one format.

blockbuster is now renting HD and Blu-ray. They also have them for sale. Price are on par with FS/BB, example:
Batman Begins: $26.99
V for Vendetta: $26.99
Pitch Black: $23.99
lots of other titles. Blu-ray seems to be a bit cheaper than the same HD title (MI:3 for example).
Might be a good time to trade in the old DVD format and buy the new HD ones since their $5 TRV is still on.

Why can't that FS deal be online. The store in Moncton is also pricier in store than online :(
I might go check it out anyways.
I went to Walmart this morning and they carry around 5x more blu-ray than HD titles. The fella said it's because they sell ps3 (although oddly enough, they had the 360's HD-DVD addon in stock but not the ps3)
I did get a good deal though, V for Vendetta HD-DVD for 23.xx$ compared to 32.xx$ at Futureshop.

My wife actually bought V For Vendetta for me at FS, but I did a price match when I saw the $10 discrepancy. BTW, VFV is probably my favorite HD so far. The video is amazing. I've got the add-on for the 360, so I am not getting the max out of the TrueHD track that is on it unfortunately.

Hey MovieKing..
sorry for being a total noob...but I have the 360 add-on as well...(recently purchased for $113.21...PM'd thx to the GOW $399.99 bundle at RV ... took the $100 credit and applied it to the HD-DVD unit!!) ANd I even got VFV for $15.99 at future shop thx to the pricing law in Montreal, that states that if the article scans higher at the register than what it is ticketed at, the merchant must discount ANOTHER $10 of the lowest ticketed price !!!(sticker on the dvd was $25.99...scanned at $32.99 at cash..$25.99 - $10 = $15.99 woot!! woot !!
But anyways...I don't understand why we won't get the max out of the TrueHD track....can you explain...please ...when you have 2-3 min...
much appreciated!!

The X360 doesn't have analog audio outputs or HDMI. It only has SPDIF which cannot carry TrueHD or high bandwidth 5.1 PCM.
BTW, anyone in GVA know which FS has the best stock of HD-DVDs? Most FS's I've been to barely have a copy of any single disk.

The 360 only supports Dolby Digital at the moment so Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus and DTS tracks are converted to Dolby Digital. A future software update should be able to enable the higher quality audio formats, if Microsoft releases one (which I believe they will, as the PS3 is supporting audio quality above Dolby Digital with BluRay).
Still sounds pretty good, though. HD-DVD for the win! :)

They are working on a software update for the player that is supposed to convert all audio formats to DTS' 1500kbps apparently. Should make for a nice audio improvement once implemented.

It'll require more than software to get TrueHD/DD+/DTS-HD out of the X360. You need analog outputs or HDMI. Optical or Coax won't cut it. MS will however add a DTS encoder, so TrueHD/DD+ can be re-encoded to DTS at 1.5Mbps. This should definitely be an improvement over what you get now. And it'll probably be enough for 95% of people out there. Not for me though =(

Just a heads up for anyone thinking about buying a BluRay player:
Except massive price drops between now and Summer 2007. The BluRay camp managed to solve their supplier issues for the key componants of the systems. Real mass production will begin early in the new year, and with lot's of brand competition, prices will be dropping very quickly.
Yes, that DOES mean we'll see BluRay players cheaper the HDDVD players in all likelyhood.
And to answer the next question, which I'm sure will be something like "but the HDDVD players will be dropping in price too right?"
Well, yes... once Toshiba teaches LiteON how to make their drive, Toshiba HDDVD players will become a little cheaper. But Toshiba's big plan for cost reduction was to get all the cheap Chinese manufacturers making HDDVD players.... except that those manufacturers found they could make a lot more money making/selling EVD players within Asia... Also, Toshiba forgot to secure the needed manufacturing parts for true mass production, and still hasn't solved that problem yet. So with their equipment already being sold so cheap, there is little chance it will drop further, unless they manage to solve some of those problems.
Hrm, why is it I'm not surprised by any of this

Some do PM on Boxing Day.
I took the XMen :The Last Stand Blu-Ray DVD up to the cashier at Wal-Mart when I was buying a few other items, figured I'd give it a shot.
I showed her the ad from FS showing it for "$21.99,Limited Quantities",and she didn't even hesitate to approve it on the spot.
There wasn't even a line-up,so she wasn't just doing it to push me through.
Even got another XBox 360 for the bedroom(OK,so I'm lazy and for $300 I no longer have to re & re it whenever I may wanna play before bed time;) )
Also quite a few 2-disc edition DVD's(that were actually GOOD ONE'S) on sale for 2/$10.
Thanks Wally World.....best Boxing Day experience I've had in a long while.
