I've got a sata as my main hdd and I want to add
an ide hdd.
Since the ide hdd isn't the boot up hdd do I need
to set it as a slave or master? Or does it matter?
Thanks!

Set it as a master.
Make sure in the bios that you have the proper boot order.
If this drive to be backup only, partition this drive as an extended partition (use the whole drive), then create the logical partitions inside this extended. If you create it as a primary, the next time you go to fresh install Windows, the partition in the IDE drive might end up with the C:\ designation. Windows and most boards will assign the IDE drive a higher up priority over an SATA drive, so it gets recognized first before SATA and thus, is given drive letter priority as well.

If it's alone on its own cable you can set it whatever you want. Makes zero difference.
