I am not computer geek so pardon my ignorance.

I have a desktop with SATA HDD. I plan to upgrade the existing SATA drive to a bigger capacity. But I am wondering if I can use SATA2 HDD. DO they use the same connector and would that be compatible to my existing system? My board has 2 SATA connectors (blue). I don't want to buy the wrong components to my computer.

Thanks for the replies.

Seagate drives for example allow you to disable the SATA2 functionality via a jumper on the drive itself. Not sure about WD and Maxtor.

Beyond that you can check your manual to see whether or not your motherboard can support SATA2. If you are unsure as to where to check in the manual then post what motherboard you have.

If you don't know what motherboard you have and/or don't have the manual you can usually see it at the beginning when you turn on your computer. If you don't see it then you can open up your box and the motherboard name should be somewhere on the board itself (ASUS boards for example will put the model between the PCI slots.)

In any case..you should be fine and yes they use the same connectors (both data and power) :D and also...the color of the SATA ports differ between boards. For example I have some orange and black ones. (ASUS P5W-DH Del.) so yours being blue doesn't really mean anything :)

it works but the drive will probably run at sata rather than sataII if your mobo doesn't support it. But either way it is backwards compatible so it will work.
