I'm going back to my hometown for two weeks during Christmas and I've got a friend who has two unused phones (one that was connected to Rogers and one with Telus). My friends always complain that I'm hard to reach because I usually visit my family during the day, and they are never able to reach me to make plans for the night. They suggested that I buy a prepaid card and use one of my friend's unused phones.

I thought it was a great idea, but I cannot find if there's an activation fee (and how much)? I don't know if it matters, but it will be used in New Brunswick.

no activation fee is charged by rogers corporate stores or by phone, most dealers do not charge activation fees either, except for Rogers Plus, The Source... By Circuit City, and THX Studio. They seem to charge $25 so avoid these places if you want to pay zero, zilch, nada, nuttin', nien, or f**k all.

Just buy the SIM Card if you dont already own an unused Rogers sim card for $25 from any rogers store (except the ones i listed above) and you can either go into the store and activate it or call it in over the tellie. they will also want to add some air time onto it, so buy a voucher while your there too the cheapest one is $10 and lasts 30 days.

The SIM card is what identifies the phone (and "stores" its phone number), right?

When your plan expires and you change phone, do you usually have to return it? In other words, what are the chances that my friend already has a SIM card in his unused Rogers phone?

It means that I could possibly have a phone for two weeks for $10 (given that I don't exceed that $10 on air time). Cool !!
