How was the experience?
My friends and I camped out for the first time last year at Best Buy. We got there at 12AM and there were 3 people already. We only had 1 lawn chair, so we had to take turns sitting in it, or warming up a bit in the car. Luckily though it wasn't that cold. 1 hour before Best Buy opened, the employees gave us all free chocolate bars and gum. CityTV was also there and interviewed us.
Overall fun experience, and worth it. Definitely doing it again this year.

I personally won't, since I normally have to get up early on Christmas and too tired to get up on Boxing Day too, that and I normally don't care much for the "Door Crasher" deals

I camped out once a couple of years ago for some nice deals on some PC parts, and incidently, I also picked up the mp3 player I'd been looking at for a while that day for $150 off because it was their last one and I haggled it down(Best Buy, even).
The only other time I've camped out was for my 360 last year, but that wasn't Boxing Day.

I don't get that whole camping out experience...camping in front of a shop in order to buy a gaming console or save 50-100 bucks.
I would really like to know what actually gets people to do that, so Rurouni, with no offense to this question, what goes through your head when you're sitting in front of best buy all night in a tent ? I really wonder. hehe

Lets see... 2001 was probably the best year for boxing day. Free dishes, phones , mp3 players @ futureshop. Awesome deals @ walmart. For the past 5 years however, boxing day has been a big joke... esp with FS and Best Buy cause all they have is a shitload of MAIL IN REBATES.

Yup true. It was just an excuse to hang out overnight with my buds. Grab some freebies and joke with everyone in line. Too many people take it too seriously and PS3 newsreports of violence means I probably won't do it this year. Just hanging out man that's all it is.
Too many online deals have MIR.

I don't know if I will camp out or not, but I definately want to get a good deal on some computer parts:
-Lightscribe DVD reader/writer
-Soundblaster x-fi xtreme audio soundcard
-a good video card
-wireless mouse and keyboard combo
if i was going to opt for camping out, where should i go? bb and fs dont even carry the soundblaster which is mainly what i want

the reason why Christmas is a holiday is to prepare for boxing day campouts

Exactly what I've done the last couple of years. BB/FS online sales always start at 9PM PST (12:00 EST) on December 25th, and I've gotten some good stuff through there (e.g. 200 bucks off a decent HK receiver, same price that was in the standard store flyer if I remember correctly). It does take some fast clicking to get what you want in your shopping cart, and a lot of patience to actually check out, however.
A few years ago I did go at about 4:30AM to Visions to get a good deal on a 27" flat screen Sony TV. While in line we checked the flyer to discover a smoking deal on some excellent bookshelf speakers ($128 down from 400+). Picked up both the TV and the speakers, overall was very worth it.

In the past couple of years, weren't all the BB/FS deals available online with free shipping? Yet so many ppl still line up in store  I don't get it...

If the server blows up at 12:05, and by the time it's working again, what you want is OOS, then you have to line up at the store...

Deals have been so-so the last few years but I think its fun. I've never had to camp out but I get there an hour or 2 before hand.

I've never had any problems getting what I wanted for Boxing Day on FS/BB websites. Some things are hard than others, but restocking is often and I've never missed anything

Yup, camping out in line is so 2001/2002/2003 unless you are buying a ps3 or wii on restock day.
I skipped the lines last year and don't regret it one bit. Probably will this year too, but I'll see the paper first and make my decision then.

Free shipping ended early this year at FS and BB. So don't expect free shipping on Boxing Day.

Oh fabulous...
Paying to ship an LCD TV won't be cheap, and the alternative for me is carrying one on the train from Ottawa. Maybe the LCD TV will wait until next year...

I tend to show up arround 10-15 mins before the store opens, that places me about 10th in line

Lucky! I did that three years ago in Ottawa; the line stretched the whole length of the parking lot.
Miraculously I still got everything I wanted, though...

got most of what i needed f/ FS/BB/stooples online, and didn't need to go line up instore on boxing day.
however, i still went to RCSS/Zellers/TRU/other malls at a later time (after the madness) to get other deals...
back in '04 i did camp out for some deals tho...

Agreed, '01 was a pure baller year for deals and camping out. Still do it with a close friend if the weather isn't too cold.

I think people considering this needs to weigh what they think their free time is worth to what they will be saving. If you're buying a bunch of stuff, then it's worth it if you can get friends or something else to keep you entertained. If you're waiting in line for 9 hours just to buy a PS3 for $200 cheaper, it's not worth it imo.
Would always be fun to do it once just for the experience though!
