Yes. I noticed. Luckily I don't need one as there's a door into my garage. You can always buy a keypad for $45 or even a keychain remote.

Bump on the deal before it closes.

Closes like a closed garage door, that it.

This is kind of OT. I just bought the $350 belt drive opener w/o the backup battery (http://www.homedepot.ca/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CatalogSearchResultView?D=941682&Ntt=941682&catalogId=10051&langId=-15&storeId=10051&Dx=mode+matchallpartial&Ntx=mode+matchall&recN=0&N=0&Ntk=P_PartNumber).

I got it mainly for the lifetime in-home warranty. Do you guys think it was worth it? Or should I go for this cheaper one with 6 year motor warranty. My old one died on me after the warranty period.

It's on the front of the flyer, so I'm guessing it's all Home Depots. But it's only this weekend, just as the OP says.

It turns out that all of the HDs local to me were cleared out of this early on Saturday. The gentleman at their desk described a huge stack of them disappearing in a matter of a couple of hours. So, no new opener for me. My old one is working okay at the moment, but it is a bit cranky sometimes... I think it's around 30 years old, so I guess I should be happy that it works at all.

I *did* however pick up the cordless hammer drill from the same flyer. It was marked as $39.00 on the price tag, but scanned as $39.99, so I was able to use their scanned prices policy and get it for $29.00. First time I've ever had the opportunity to take anyone up on an incorrect price scan.

DIY is pretty easy but a word of caution!

The chamberline manuals neglect to mention that its a good idea to lower the downforce on the motor when testing the reverse safety mechanism.

The test requires putting an object under the site of the lasers so that they dont pick it up and have the garage door hit the object and reverse back.

When I put the object under the door, not knowing the downforce power was halfway, it hit the object and continued to crush down on it until the entire arm ripped off the garage door. Luckily there was no damage but there very well could have been.

Ok...how much does it cost to have someone install for me? I called some stores and they are asking for $90..is the price reasonable?

$90 sounds decent. Is there already a receptacle for the door opener? They may try to snag you for more $$$ if there isn't.

Call some local companies that maintain commercial garage doors. They tend to have the more experienced door maintenance people. You want to ensure the door is properly set up (springs balanced properly/hinges in good shape and lubricated/rollers running free/lift cables in good shape).

When properly set up - the door should open and close manually with very little effort on your part. That way - the garage door opener has very little work to do and will last years longer.

Door Maintenance
On my 25 year old door - the hinges started to get hairline fracture cracking after the 15'th year. They are easy to replace - There is a number stamped on each hinge denoting it's position on the door relative to the floor level.

The rollers eventually wear out and are easy to replace yourself.

Reparing the following two items is best left to the 'professionals'.

Check the steel cables (running on each side of the door from the bottom to the top spring rollers. Make sure they are not starting to unravel (fray).

The main spring (or springs) will eventually break. When they do you can request 'extra duty' springs from the installer. These last more open/close cycles than the ones that came with the door.

If you can, spring for the extra and get a belt drive, instead of chain.

In my opinion well worth the extra money.

Especially if the garage is attached to your house, the noise difference is remarkable.

Installed my own Garage Door opener - pretty easy bought it from sears they usually have them for $189 on sale with PAD. Just a quick tip spray the spring above the garage door with some WD40, so the noise will be minimized, also the rollers with some sort of a grease and your set.

Also when configuring your up/down forces becarefull to remember how much you turn the plastic screw as these products dont have any type of protection.

Everything else is straight forward.

price back to 189 ?
any other deal..i'm in market for a garage door opener

I bought my opener last month at Sears
http://www.sears.ca/gp/product/B000J34IRE/sr=1-3/qid=1166517599/ref=sr_1_3/105-5446216-0429247?ie=UTF8&searsBrand=core&mqnodeid=16361881

I phoned in the order instead of ordering it online - the price was $189, cheaper than the online price. I know, not that spectacular of a deal BUT it comes with a coupon for a free keypad, well not exactly free, pay $10 S+H. It also has the light control module to turn the lights on via the remote control...
