Is bigger always better? What screen size would you prefer for your laptop?

For a laptop, NO! bigger is not better. Most people buy laptops for mobile computing (mobility), some for desktop replacement. The 17+"s are really heavy (this ones are for desktop replacement) , the 12" are a little bit small for some. The middle one ~14"-15.4" would be good.

I'm happy with my 12" screen cause the laptop is so small I can take it everywhere and not even notice I have it. Any bigger and it would be more of a hassle. But if I were to do hours of work on it per day, I would go with something bigger.

12 inches is great. 15 for me seems too big to take to class. maybe 13 and 14 woudl be fine.

But 12 has been great so far.

15" wide is pretty good, any bigger i'd go carry my desktop computer around. (Exageration)
I dunno, it depends on what you use it for... gaming = bigger the better, but you'll need to get a better desktop.

Have a 12" Asus but I would prefer a 13.3" one.

My 12" is fine for notes, web, email, etc. Its a little small for anything else. But its under 4lbs so its easy to drag along with my other stuff.

You need to redo this poll/thread to include 12/13.3/14 + WS variations....the choices are too limited, as shown by the "other" category.

I've had 13.3", 15.4" and wasn't happy, which was one of the reasons I sold my Mac Book.

17" should do it for me if/when I buy another Mac. LOL

I thought about getting 15" but it was too big. Lugging it around will not be mobile. I thought 12" was too small though, so I settled for 13.3", I like it!

14.1"

i think its a good size for a girl. 15" would be ok too but larger than that, it will be to heavy for me.

15 inch T60 - pros (more real estate) and cons (a little on the large side to lug around)

12" if you want portability.

15" or more if you want a desktop replacement for gaming (but really I can't see the point).

I have a 14", 15", and a 10.3". The 15 feels bulky, the 10.3" is small, but I need the portability (telecommunications technician) and the 14" is perfect. Most people that buy the larger screen laptops, want to use it as a desktop or want to be cool. It is funny after 2-3 months when they start whining it is too heavy and big to lug around.

I will post my 2 cents. I would tend to agree with most people who have posted. 14 is likely the best compromise. However, I ended up ordering a 15 widescreen T60 because a widescreen would be nice for long hours I will spend working on it. It is true it may be a bit bulkier but for casual travellers like myself, this is a good compromise.

Currently use an 12" but it plays WOW great!. The biggest i can use without complaining is 14.1". I initially started useing a Dell 15.4" WS years ago and then ended up getting a 12". I found it horrid at first but got used to it and absolutly love it now, even now i find using a 14.1" notebook to big :D. Plus i prefer under 4 lbs and the lighter the better. My next laptop purchase will definatly be the next version of the X60.

15" wide is big enough for me, I think those 17" laptops makes it too big and not portable enough so its not so good...

I don't have a lappy so I cannot say. But from observations, I think anything more than 14" would be too big. I see students who bring in like 15" lappys and they look too big and wouldn't fit well in my bad. But something like a 12-14" probably would be a good compromise.

A student had a 17" widescreen lappy...lol. overkill

11.1" widescreen! + built in dvdrw

If you're working lots at home, you'd want to use a larger external monitor anyways. I find even the 13.3"'s are too small to work on for extended periods.

I've seen some people using 8.6". That's wayy too small but the most ultraportable ever.

I've had a 14.1' Toshi and it was pretty heavy, anything over 5lb is pretty hefty to take to school, especially with a bunch of other books.
I now use a 12.1' toshi portege, it's aweome, 3.5lbs with a dvd/cdrw

After owning 2 12 inchers, i'm used to working on them for long periods of time, but, really, it's a matter of preference.

Pro: Easy on your back, compact
Con: May be hard to see/work on it for a long time

12" for portability

mine's 14" thinkpad. For my next laptop, I will probably get a smaller one.

i'm using 13.1 fujitsu right now, if this baby breaks, then my next one might be smaller as well.

I definitely prefer portability.

Had a 15.4" that was plenty powerful, but I hated carrying it because it was simply a brick and a half. Switched to a 12", still wasn't that happy (ok, maybe because it was unbearably slow), and now I've got a PDA, and a small one at that (2.8").

Even though it lacks power, it does everything I need it to do when I'm not home. Even surfing RFD is fine despite the site not being mobile-optimized. And with Google expanding its selection of mobile-friendly sites and dedicated Gmail/Gmap applications, I've got everything I need without the bulk. No need to search for power plugs either... when I'm running low, my 2xAA powered USB battery pack gives me cheap and dependable power.

Had a 12", that was to small so went with a 15.4" but that was to big, so I got a 14.1" and am happy with it.

I was thinking about the 17', but I'm not fully sure =/

IMO laptop screens should not exceed 15'...for school i would probably go with something smaller. But 15' is better for watching movies and gaming. Depends on your needs :S

Unless you don't plan on moving your laptop at all, don't get anything over 15".
