I'd also like to see some deal for an MBP, but I doubt you'd get one cheaper than Education discount. Kind of sucks.

From your previous experience in the past years, can anybody say if dell.ca has attractive "deals" during the boxing week? Are they better than this weeks deal (which are worse than last week's)?
Thanks

I also happen to be looking for a laptop around the $1000 range. Hopefully with
Core 2 Duo
1GB RAM
100GB HDD or better
DVD-RW
15"+ Screen
Don't really need a gfx card for it though.
I'm worried I might miss any boxing day deals since I'm leaving for a Winter holidays trip right on the 26th.

BB just had $200 off all current MBP's at their recent online FF sale. They'll probably do the same for BD. It's the same as the edu price, but with a BB return policy...

I'm looking to get a very basic laptop that has a DVD burner, wireless 802.11, 512 Ram is ok, just for basic email and surfing (and playing online poker)....budget is around $500 and those ones at Staples looked great for what I wanted but there were none left.
Anybody know if last year there were any deals like this, a doorcrasher maybe, or is it usually just a few hundred off the $1000+ laptops? Thanks.

I asked the manager of a computer store that I want to get the best performance laptop these days. He told me in Feb.2007, "xx the bus speed will match processor speed (currently it is not) xx "
[edit/corrected] the front bus speed will match desktop front bus speed,
which will give the laptop a very high performance compared to the current ones and it will match current desktops speed. He told me if I can wait for two months I will get better deals and better performance !
Anyone likes to comment ! I understand that technology is moving and if I can wait for more than two years I will get better performance blah blah blah ... but really when I see the current deals I feel Dell, FS & BB did not offer any good deals on laptops during this boxing week ! and if I can wait for 2 month may be a better choice !

its BS. that doesn't even make sense. bus speeds AND clock speeds will BOTH always be increasing. is he trying to tell you that 2ghz clock speed 2ghz FSB will give better performance than 5ghz clock speed and 2ghz FSB? doesn't make sense. if you follow his logic, you'll always be waiting for something better.

Okay first of all, that is hogwash. There is no way in hell the bus speed will match the processor speed. The bus speed for Core 2 right now is 266 MHz. He's basically telling you the bus speed next February will suddenly jump to 1.83+ Ghz?
Second of all, the only new thing coming out in Q1 2007 is the Allendale, which is a modified version of the Core 2 we have right now. Not a huge difference in terms of performance. Just a slightly different processor.
Third of all, never ask sales people for advice. Do your homework before going to the store.

you can upgrade to 7200 processor by calling dell and placing an order...and as usual tell them its so costly or something otherwise they are going to wipe you out. In normal cases T7200 is a 200$ upgrade from the 1.6ghz core2 duo processor

Go for a Dell Inspiron 6400/1505
6400 is a lil pricy for what it offers and the 1505 is non existant on their website, the 1501 would be ok but with a 60GB HD its pretty worthless, her iPOD having more space than her laptop would be a sad state of affairs.

The 1505 is the 6400 canadian model, I didn't know if you were Canadian or American. As for the HDD, you can customize it that's not a big deal or you can buy one afterward. 6400 are worth the bucks.

It depends if you want to play games or not, if you don't, no need of a dedicated graphic card. And also, if you want it to be "portable" I would avoir the 17'' screen, it's gonna be way too heavy.

In my opinion, this offer is the BEST at boxing day, but remember to buy 3-year futureshop warranty
Acer has same poor quality as dell, compaq, emachine, gateway ......
Anyone got any opinions about this laptop?

I dont know about getting a 3-year warranty on it, thats like 279.99$ or something relatively close to that, that just ruins the deal, I know a few people who have had acer's before, and nothing has happened to them...guess it depends on who uses it...
heh, buy another laptop 2 years from now

On this 699 laptop , it's a turion X2 , how is the battery on the X2 compared to the single core Turion 64 , or compared to a Centrino processor ? I'd consider it if you guys told me it was similar to a Pentium M .... coz right now I have a Turion 64 laptop at my possession , and im in need of more juice for lectures n stuff .

I got a turion x2 on my hp, I'd say about 2.5 hours, and sometimes even 3 hours if i keep my screen on very low brightness,, with gaming, prolly 70-90minutes. (i got a nvidia geforce 6150),
so its pretty good, i mostly have my adapter handy, so I really dont notice much difference....

grilw
Dec 26th, 2006, 02:21 AM
that Acer is probably the best deal , but I still don't see it as 'excellent' value for the money , i'd give it a 'good' at best .
Its pretty fast and powerful and portable , won't run the latest games, and the battery won't last long, it'll make more noise than an intel also . That's why it's cheaper than others. If all you need is a laptop to read news do some downloading watch movies , and pretty much anything but use the battery for extended periods or play latest games , this laptop will do the job well .
Me personally I'm gonna wait until the prices drop some more , it may take months , but sooner or later Staples will have another clearance sale :)

Anyone have any opinions towards this laptop that's on the BB flyer?
HP Pavilion AMD Turion 64 X2 Dual Core Mobile Technology TL-50
1GB Ram
100GB Hard Drive
Dual Layer DVD Burner with Lightscribe
128MB Nvidia Gforce @Go 6150 Graphics
17" Widescreen
For $999
----------
There are 4 similar laptops with the similar price range. I was wondering if this is any good
Spec & feature wise IMO this is the Best advertised boxing day Laptop in any store or site here's why:
- the 17'' model comes with a remote
- also includes a 8-Cell Lithium Ion battey(rumored to give you between 4-5 hours)
- the 17' inch version has a better DVD burner that supports lightscribe.
- BB has on offer if you buy any HP laptop or desktop you get $100 any HP printer. BB also has a HP Laser printer on sale for $99.99, so In essence if you you buy the HP Laptop you'll get a free Laser printer.....SWEET!!
Plus for those of you who are preferred BB Store card members use your $200 off $2000 coupon for even greater savings. Im going to look up reviews on this model. If I end up getting 2 laptops(1 for work & 1 for home) After using $350 in BB giftcards + my BB $200 coupon I would end up getting these for under $1700 taxes in.

It seems its back in stock and they extended the offer beyond Dec. 26th & 27th. While it says out of sock its just on Back order.
Spec & feature wise this is the Best advertised Laptop on any site boxing day here's why:
- Before I forget to mention 1 of the most important factors, the video card included in this Laptop is a Nvidia GeForce Go 6150 which is a killer video card, and has 256MB of Ram and not 128 as advertised. Check the Nvidia Site.
- After doing carfeul research, concluded that the DV9005CA model @BB was incorrectly priced, but you won't know that.
- All HP Pavillion models also come with a neat looking remote.
- Only the DV9005CA model includes a 8-Cell Lithium Ion battery(rumored to give you between 4-5 hours)
- The 17'' inch version has a fairly decent DVD burner that also supports Lightscribe.
- BB has on offer if you buy any HP laptop or desktop you get $100 any HP printer. BB also has a HP Laser printer on sale for $99.99, so In essence if you you buy the HP Laptop you'll get a free Laser printer.
Either way you slice it this is a 1 helluva deal.

The only thing kept from buying it is the lacking of wireless network adapter! I don't want to put a card in everytime I want to use wireless network.
Edit: I found it has b/g wirelss. Damn bestbuy not show that in the specification page. But I still think it only has 128 of video ram.

its BS. that doesn't even make sense. bus speeds AND clock speeds will BOTH always be increasing. is he trying to tell you that 2ghz clock speed 2ghz FSB will give better performance than 5ghz clock speed and 2ghz FSB? doesn't make sense. if you follow his logic, you'll always be waiting for something better.
Your analogy does not reflect what the manager was trying to say. A better analogy would be... a 2ghz processor with a FSB of (200mhz * 4 = 800 mhz effective) will probably perform better than a 2ghz processor with a FSB of (166.75 mhz * 4 = 667mhz effective).
It is true that there will be a core 2 duo (merom) update in approximately april of 2007. The update will consist of a new socket used by the processor (socket P) and the processor will have a FSB upgrade from 166.75mhz (667mhz eff.) to 200mhz (800mhz eff.). This update will make the current generation of core 2 duos obsolete just like how the new core 2 duos have made core duos obsolete. (BTW, this partcular processor may not sound all that spectacular, but its centrino platform is quite impressive.)

It will not. Coz there is no use of higher FSB when RAM prices are so high. Hell we dont even get 667mhz RAM with budget computers. It is just a slight update.

If I didn't already convince people to buy 3 in the last 2 days, I wouldn't have found this out.....I can assure you it has a wireless network adapter & its 256MB. I also personally checked the on board Video memory & its listed at 256 MB. I wouldn't be listing it on here stating that it has 256MB if it didn't. the Nvidia GeForce Go 6100 card has 128 MB of on board memory. Looks like someone @ BB F'd up. This should be at least at $1500 system.

This is an okay deal. I believe the intergrated graphics has to share memory from the system to combine with the intergrated memory on the graphics chip to obtain a total of 256mb of video ram. The amount of memory avaliable for intergrated graphics is usually a non-factor simply because it's too slow to take advantage of it. Simply put, it won't put the beautiful 17' display to good use when you're gaming... and it's certainly not impressive enough to show off to your friends.
If you want a hot deal for notebook with real graphics power, check the staples clearances. They are your best bet. http://www.redflagdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=351146
