I'm going nuts trying to get the perfect TV.
I have an HTPC and plan on gaming and using the screen for web surfing from my couch too. So I need the following:
1080p
No burn-in issues
50" +
No lamps or moving parts.
The LCDs e.g. Sharp 52" are still too pricey. DLPs look great for the price, but most manufacturers have lamp issues, or colour wheel related problems.
The one model that's readily available in the U.S.A. that fits all of the above is the Samsung HL-S5679w, a DLP that uses LEDs instead of a colour wheel and lamp. Good luck finding someone in Canada that has it. (If anyone knows of a dealer in Montreal, please let me know).
FutureShop and BestBuy are crap for my needs. BB in teh US has had the tv I want for months, but not a peep over here- just the same tired old tvs week after week.

Question:
Best brand out there, which would it be?: Sony, Sharp, Toshiba, Hitachi, Pioneer, Panasonic, etc...
Sony i am in love, but is it worth the price?
Want it to be the latest and greatest as possible cause not going to be buying another tv in YEARSSSS
I am looking for a 46" LCD TV. I am looking at sony currently because the images just look so sharp in them (and for the future i am getting a ps3, currently have the wii now).
Has to be 1080p. Do not know what else is important to look for.

There's a black LG 42" LCD HDTV over @ 2001 Audio/Video for $1650.
It seems like a pretty good deal to me. Dunno how it compares to the rest of your finds though.
BTW. It's part of their boxing day sale which is going on now.

32" for 500 can easily happen no doubt.. but not sure about the 37'' though.. in case you guys are interested.. i was being told by my co-worker that japan and korea are both trying to lift up the price for LCDTV.. reason for that... they want to make more out of us... ~ don't know if it is true though.. if it is.. it is bad news for people like us who want to get a LCDTV this x'mas...

I'll be looking for the best price / value on a 42" LCD that does 1080p in Ottawa. I'd go 47" if there are good prices, but I'm not crossing my fingers.
BB's had the Toshiba 42HL196 for $2299 lately - I'm guessing that could be had for $2000 or less. I'd love something like the Sharp Aquos 46" (LC46D62U) at a good price, but I'm not holding my breath.
Being something of an Ottawa Boxing Day newb, are there any locations other than the big names (BB, FS, Audiotronic) that I'll want to include on my Boxing Day list?

I also did a bunch of talkin with the A&B Sound in Langley and Surrey ... and they actually came down on another TV (a Toshiba) i was lookin at quite well ... they seam to be good guys (at first impresion). I'm really tempted to get the LG Plasma one on the FS front page.. which isn't LCD, which one is the one with the lamp heat issue ? DLP or Plasma ? Either that or the 55" SONY FOR $1800 on FS's 2nd page, any comments on these 2 ?

yeah, seriously. No one is talking about the 37" LG for $999. I'm assuming that's because it's a crappy model or something otherwise people should be drooling all over it since it in theory would be far better than the Costco Viewsonic or the BB Westinghouse from a week ago.

(Sony KDL40XBR2 40 LCD $2,900 A&B Sound )
this (and all prices listed) were from one of the various flyers that came by the house.
I also did a bunch of talkin with the A&B Sound in Langley and Surrey ... and they actually came down on another TV (a Toshiba) i was lookin at quite well ... they seam to be good guys (at first impresion). I didn't buy ... was just trying to get an idea of what i could talk the different stores into. Visions and A&B Sound were the best at giving me an even better price on things.
Hope that helps some.
Could you be so kind as to post the link or scan for the xbr2 40 lcd for 2900 at A&B...would like to pricematch.

IMHO Hitachi and Panasonic where the best looking plasmas.
Samsung was the worst among big brands and LG was somwhere in the middle.
Let's try to find deals and not so much wishfull thinking here :)
Electronics for less is another place to keep an eye on.
I heard they will negotiate deep discounts , like no tax and such.

At any rate, for those looking to get great picture quality on 27" or more under $1000 that does both SD and HD well I think you have to go with new fashioned direct view HD CRT. Or wait until Boxing Day 2007, I am sure by then LCD will have gotten this far.

Keep in mind not everything is broadcasted in HD, so SD quality should be considered for the transition period.
The best for SD in my opinion for LCD is Panasonic, LG, and Philips.
For plasma it's LG.
Hard to determine this unless you've seen it hooked up in person which I have.

Rear projection ok? What brands are ok, and what brands are poop.
Brand A has excellent HD image quality, but slight banding, Brand B has no banding, blah blah blah.
Should I just say screw it, and get a projector?
Would I be happier spending an extra grand, or would I be happier saving that grand, and having a slightly inferior tv? Should I spring for a 3 year warranty, or do recent TV's not go to bad?

I think what it ultimately comes down to is brand preference. I really don't know how any LCD tv can "suck." Especially if they're the same size. If having 2 hdmi inputs is important then get the Viewsonic. For me, the only thing I need the hdmi for is my PS3. I mean the thing triples as a blu ray player, dvd player, and plays games. sorry, didnt have time to elaborate on my "it sucks".
most of the problems are with the black levels, VERY unnatural colours (for those who own x360 you WILL definitely notice this...especially in gears of war or dead or alive 4), a lot of image noise, 1 hdmi, vga limited to 1024X768 (not good for x360 use!), the speakers bass is crap (rattling occurs very often!)

I think two HDMI's are important in a sense, I dont have an Xbox, but I do have an upconverting DVD player that requires HDMI, and I would also like to take advantage of my High Def Digital box HDMI instead of using components?

I was told by the guy in the sony store today that if you have an UP CONVERTING DVD player, or Home theatre Kit with DVD, that it MUST be plugged in through HDMI, if you use component cables the 'up converting' will not work?
Is this true? If it is true this means you could not take advantage of the HDMI with the digital box?
Hooking these things up is so damn complicated.

So does plugging in an HD digital cable box via componant cables deliver a large decrease in quality vs the HDMI cable? My HD DVR cable box. Motorola 6412 (i think) doesnt apear to have hdmi. Just componant and DVI.
Secondly,
OK so here is my question. Why is the viewsonic so much cheaper for the same size? Having trouble finding much more than the posted link above for good comparative reviews. cnet didnt relaly review the LG

He's mostly correct, as there are a few upconverting DVD players out there that will work over component. The vast majority, however, will only upconvert over HDMI or DVI (digital outputs).
For a better explanation of how and why, take a look at this (http://www.engadgethd.com/2006/06/20/ask-hd-beat-dvd-upconverting-over-component/) article.

If you guys are so worried about a lack of HDMI inputs, get a receiver. If your going to have a ~1000$ TV, you may as well get a receiver n' some sound equipment to go along with it. I bought my receiver ~4 years ago, and it has 2 HDMI inputs on it (One out obviously)
I'll use one for my 360, and I'll be getting one of the HD-DVD thingy's for the 360 so I really only need one input, but I'll have another if need be.
And putting everything through a receiver is just so easy. Mines in a very accessible place so plugging new cables in is easy. All I need then is one cable running from the receiver to the TV.
I'll be trying to grab the 42" LG. Not sure what time I'll need to show up to get one though..

I was looking at a Sony receiver that had what you describe, it was a cheaper kit for about 500$, now after doing some research I found that these HDMI inputs on the receiver were simply 'Pass throughs' like a switch, but that the receiver did not actuall process any HDMI itself, the guy at the sony strore told me that there were few receivers that did this? also, when passed through the receiver, the sound was cut the sound out of the HDMI cable.... I also read that when you plug in the HDMI's through the receiver that you are comromising some of the quality?
again, I dont know much about this stuff, so I could be dead wrong, is yours an expensive receiver?
nonetheless, I have heard, for optimal performance, your device (digital box, DVD player) should hook up directly to the TV if possible.
what type of receiver do you have that had this technology 4 years ago? and do you have to hook up the audio seperate, or does the audio pass through your HDMI cables aswell?

but myself, I think I am leaning towards the 42 inch Samsung Plasma for 1299$. It has two HDMI's I get 5 extra inches of screen and the name brand is better.

I don't think I will need one. My Sharp has 5 inputs
2 HDMI
2 Component
1 Composite/S-Video
Currently connection to it:
Expressvu 9200 over HDMI
XBOX 360 over Component
By the summer I should have:
Upconverting DVD over HDMI
Wii over Component
I don't see anything else connected to this tv so I think I am good

I was also deciding whether to return the Viewsonic but I was forced to do so when it died on me in less than a month. As for the LG, there has been some mixed reviews in avsforum.com. I would have very much preferred the Panny 37PX60 but it's not on sale.
oh i found a mate who got a dead viewsonic in less than one month....

Really, what are people expecting from these norcet, viewsonic, proview, digimate or any other generic piece of crap. They are all crap, half of them carry 90 day warranties, and good luck gtting servicing even if they do break under factory warranty. they look like crap, and people buying them somehow justify their purchases by kidding themselves about how great they look. They are for the most part horriffic.

well i've narrowed my options down to:
FS:
Sharp 32" LC32SH2OU - 799$
Sharp 37" LC374OU - 1499$
now i have to compare specs & reviews....
:D
Visions is selling the Sharp 32" LCD (LC32SH20)- $695
Have you or anybody else had any experience with that model TV?

Superstore's clearance has a Norcent 27" LCD HDTV for $200 @_@ Going on right now.
also some 36" LCD TV for $600...
pretty insane prices.
i'd go to RCSS to take a look before considering FS/BB's so-called BD/W "deals"....

Last week when I was in Costco, they seemed to have a new return policy sign that only mentioned 30 days return only. Anyone know if it was changed??
So the LG for $999 or the Viewsonic at Costco for $999? What's the deal? I'm leaning towards the Viewsonic simply because of Costco's second to none return policy, and the fact that about a thousand RFDers already have one and seem to be happy with them overall.
But my gut tells me that the LG should be a much better set than the Viewsonic.
anyone else going through this debate right now?

Note that according to the AVS forum, there are several versions of the LG, some with 1 HDMI and 2 coax (for OTA and D-cable) and others have 2 HDMI and 1 coax. Of course this is for the US so I don't know which model FS/BB has here in Canada. For most of Canada, I think the 2 HDMI/1 Coax would be better as except for Van, TO and Montreal, there's really no OTA HD at least for the next year or 2. Comments?
Also, you can always get a HDMI splitter for 2 devices into 1 HDMI port, I believe it cost around US$26 or so (from AVS forum).
I think two HDMI's are important in a sense, I dont have an Xbox, but I do have an upconverting DVD player that requires HDMI, and I would also like to take advantage of my High Def Digital box HDMI instead of using components?
How do you hook up your Digital box?

well i just came back from FS to check out the TV's...(no best buy near my folks place).
the 37" LG was beside a 37" Samsung and I could see no real difference. they had a 37" aquos on display which did look a bit better. since i'm not paying 1499$ for the 37" sharp for slighty better inputs & a small difference in picture, i'm going with the 37" LG which *I hope* I'll be able to get online.
lol..the sales guy tried to get me to buy it today at "a reduced price" but i said 999$ or no deal.

Unless you want a flat panel display specifically for your SD content, buying an EDTV is a bad decision. In your case, spending ~$900 on an EDTV when the same money will buy an HDTV is particularly unwise. Maybe a year or two ago it could be excusable, but not now. Yes, prices will drop later, but why buy an inferior product now? The resolution afforded is the reason why there is such excitement over HDTV in general, so why buy a EDTV when you are in fact wanting to buy an HDTV but are sticking at the price? Also, a 42" image with such few pixels won't look very good.

I agree with Carbo - this is a brutal mis-understanding of aspect ratios and resolutions.
1. Television sizes don't become obsolete.
2. You are apparently completely ignorant of the nature of video processing in relation to broadcast resolutions. Scaling and compressing indeed - which is it? And during which applications?
3. You can't turn a 16:9 ratio into a 4:3 ratio simply by saying it's so. A set that is 1366x768 is NOT 1024x768. Do you even proof read this stuff before you post it?
4. You seem to be very pro-LCD, yet LCDs ship in the same size and resolution as plasma... if your previous arguments had even a shred of accuracy in them, wouldn't they apply to this format as well?
As the owner of a 42" HD Plasma (Hitachi 42HDS52) I can state unequivocably that it's excellent for both SD and HD applications. I've got Shaw HD cable, A Wii, and Xbox 360 and a Toshiba HD-A2 plugged in and each unit produces crisp images with no flicker and simply outstanding quality. I don't know who you are, but I'm certainly glad you don't have anything to do with people making technology purchasing decisions. Everyone's entitled to their opinion, it's just a pity yours is so mis-informed.

actually he's right in that most 42 inch plasmas have a resolution of 1024x768 (which is indeed a 4:3 format), but each pixel is shaped so that when they're all put together the tv screen will be 16:9.

See, FUD like this is exactly why so many people wind up buying (and probably paying too much for) the wrong set for their application; they're probably treating what clueless salespeople spew as gospel. Case in point: my neighbour recently bought a 40" 1080p Bravia, and watches it from a distance of nearly 11 feet. Will his eyes be able to discern the increased detail that a 1920x1080 resolution affords? Not at all, sorry. He should have bought a 55"+ 720p set for that distance. From my roughly-seven-foot viewing distance, my 720p 42" Pioneer plasma will appear to the eye every bit as detailed as his whether I'm feeding it a 720p, 1080i or 1080p signal. Plus, I get the added bonus of real blacks and not "very dark grays". And mine cost less.
LCD certainly does have its place, and a 52" Aquos is likely to be my next purchase. More for having buddies over and gaming and whatnot. I do wish LCDs could catch up to plasma when it comes to viewing angles, though.

okay i was wondering what Panasonic Plasma should I get the 42" or 50". Just so you know I want to get the 50". My living room is very small tough. Its only 6-7 feet from my TV. Will the 50" look good from that distance?
I am aware that the 50" doesn't do 1080p but i don't really care for that. Maybe in 2-3 years I will care. Reason I want an HDTV is for NFL Sunday Ticket(i am aware there is only 1 more week left) & NHL Center Ice. Movies/Video Games are a bonus.

This is where a 52" 1080p LCD would be great...6-7 feet. A 50" plasma, unless you want to spend $5K+ on the 1080p Panny, is maybe a bit too big. Go for the 42", I think. An 8-foot distance is optimal for a 42" 720p; about 10 for a 50". Maybe you can scoot the chairs/sofa back a bit?
Look at both, though. Granted, they usually have a crap feed going to these sets in the store, but if a HD feed going to the 50" looks not-so-good to your eyes from 7 feet, imagine what SD will look like.

At 7 feet, the pixel structure on a 50" plasma will be fairly evident I think. Again, look at both from the distance you'll actually be viewing the set from but I'm pretty confident that you won't want to go beyond a 42". Your own eyes are the best judge, however.

I can confirm this. I bought a HDTV from FS yesterday. They gave me a package that was essentially just a slip of paper with a confirmation number. My girlfriend called Rogers yesterday and despite us being existing Rogers customers, they agreed to give us the HD PVR free for 10 months. Would have been 12 for the HD receiver (minus PVR). The base HD channels come free as well.

perhaps people should start doing a little research before just talk crap....everything i wrote is from MANY comments on MANY websites...no one just came up to me and told me that this is what it is and that it. THE FACTS are the FACTS. try googling "42" plasma resolutions" every person will comment on the same PROBLEM. plasma technology has not been able to make TRUE HD formats, why is it that when u buy a wide screen monitor for your pc it will never be a 4:3 format meaning 1024:768. TODAYS 42" PLASMAS will be OBSOLETE....they have to come up with something to keep up with LCD's. I had a plasma for 10 months, looked great, BUT now i have a LCD and if u had not got it, I WOULD NOT HAVE KNOW WHAT I WAS MISSING. why do u think in the stores they do not put them side by side....maybe a few years ago plasmas had the upper hand...but not today. a 50" plasma still would be acceptable, but today the standard for 50" up is 1080P(1920x1080) it makes think more clear, even at close distance. last year a 50" plasma was retail for $6000-8000, today $2000-2800. why would such a GREAT technology drop so much...their scared and they should be. LCD will take over even 50" panels in the next year. 42" plasmas SUCK.
Plasmas suck period. Overpriced pieces of junk. TOtal failure.

Meh all this plasma hate.. As if LCD is perfect or something.. Last time I checked the black levels were still not comparable to plasmas on LCD's, and viewing angle issues are there too.
Screen resolution is only one factor in the quality of a set. Try to get someone to figure out 1080p vs 720p on a 42" set from a typical 9-11 foot viewing distance.

PC display is secondary for me. My primary use for this TV will be Wii and Xbox 360. You seem to have had a lot of issues with the Viewsonic with the 360 so I don't know why you're recommending it so highly o.o; Gonna have to go with AVS forum on that one.

Finally, someone with some common sense. :)
The rest of you guys who are knocking plasma TV's in general are totally clueless, and you do a real disservice to those RFD'ers asking advice about plasma/LCD. "Plasmas are total junk", "plasma resolution sucks", etc. Whatever you say. So many people on RFD have no clue what they're talking about when it comes to HDTV and just continue to spew biased crap and misinformation.
You guys knocking plasma resolution and ranting on about 1080p should take a cue from the Imaging Science Foundation (ISF), experts on the subject. The ISF's top four aspects to HDTV image quality, in order of importance, are as follows:
1. contrast ratio
2. colour saturation
3. colour accuracy
4. resolution
As you can see, resolution ranks 4th place on the list. What about the top three? Generally, plasma TV's beat LCD in all of them.
I'm not trying to sway anyone one way or another, I just get sick of the misinformation I read on RFD, and I hate to think that people actually might base their $1500+ purchases on some of what I see in this thread. Plasma and LCD HDTV sets each have advantages and disadvantages, and that's a fact. Contrast ratios, resolution, banding, burn-in, black levels, ghosting/response time, viewing angles, dead pixels, reflection, etc. are just a few of the issues with them. Last time I checked, many of these issues apply only to LCD sets, while others apply only to plasma.
The best advice I can give buyers is this - DO YOUR RESEARCH, and do it somewhere reliable - AVS Forum (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/) is a great start, and check out the LCD (http://www.lcdtvbuyingguide.com/) and Plasma (http://www.plasmatvbuyingguide.com/) buying guides while you're at it.

{clipping of banality}.
When rants this illogical, this ill-informed and this GENERAL are applied to people it's usually labelled sexism, racism and half a dozen other -isms.
You, sir, are participating in displayism - a horrible new form of discrimination wherein one has the unnatural urge to steadfastly maintain their position is the only possible correct one. It's a subset of the condition commonly referred to as Fanboyism.
1024x768 is fine for 720p AND 1080i. The black levels, for many people, are precisely why they chose these sets. Furthermore, if these sets were so horrible, you'd see much higher return rates - which is simply not the case.
Should you need something with higher resolution - look to the Hitachi's with 1024x1080 res and 1080p processing.
You're angry. It's okay. I still love you. I'm sure your television is quite nice. My LCD is great, my plasma is also great. I need you to come down off the ledge now and let the nice doctors take care of you.

We got the 50'' plasma panasonic on BlackFriday, best TV i've ever seen. When you're talking about TV in the 50''+ range, plasma owns LCD hands down! Perfect image, no burn in (thats a thing of the past), you get awesome black colors.

so i went to future shop looking for the 42 inch lg at 1499, and the guy convinced me to buy a hitachi plasma 42hds69 for 1799 saying the picture quality is alot better and how its a better bang for the buck. I have to admit being put on the spot under pressure I caved in at the time. I haven't opened it yet but can anyone give any feedback on this plasma? (perhaps vs the lg 42lc2d) thanks for your help

plasmas are only good for movies. black levels are great on them...but they are beaten in every other issue. viewing angles are a thing of the past...160 for plasmas and 178 for lcd... 8ms resonse times about the same for both flatpanels, low enough not to notice ghosting. contrast are all made up...some plasmas dont even have 400:1 but it say 3000:1 on the unit. try opening the windows on your plasma, sunlight is like a devil to it. lcd is your best bet. you can watch 4:3 all day/night with no burn in problems. dont read all things about lcd on the web, many are outdated reviews/comments, read upto date ones. plasma still has 50" & up beat for now, but thanks to the "chinese" market it will all be over soon. add that to your "ism's". a year ago i was argueing that edtv was the best bang for the buck...and it was, a year ago. today lcd is the best. tommorow who knows? oled?sled?plasma part2? but people want to know whats the best today. everyone should do their own research.

I went to FS to look at the Sony KDL46V2500 46" LCD. I saw it FS online for $3299, but in-store it was tagged at $3499. I asked the salesperson about it and he said that $3299 was probably an online only price. He wouldn't match it. So I left and was going to put off purchasing for a month or two. At the mall I walked by a Sony store and I went in to check things out. To my surprise, they had it on for $3299. I asked the salesperson about the extended warranty and price for delivery. He said free delivery. I told him to let me think on it a few minutes. He came back and offered to sell me the set for $3299 plus a 3 year Sonycare extended warranty for $30 (total warranty is 4 years). I said DEAL!!! :cheesygri

I read that article and all I read is a company (Panasonic) who is the describe largest producer of plasma TVs...pushing plasma. Uhm..yah..nice article. Not only that, they produce LCD TVs in a size that does not compete against their plasmas. So really, pushing this article, you are directing people to follow the faith of a producer of plasma TVs in the larger sizes. The argument that they produce both, doesn't matter since they are targetting their LCDs at the smaller sizes. All they say is look at how black is black on plasmas. The counter agruement to that is the black won't be so black in a lit room because of the glare reflection on the plasma's glass display.

Ughh.. Bought my 32" Bravia today at FS for 1199, opened it up and surprise! There was no manual. I think it was open box, or maybe an employee just opened it to get the manual. Anyway, my girlfriend called them and told them about it, and the lady on the phone said that today there will be no exchanges [which is understandable], and tomorrow i can either get a discount on the tv - they'll treat it as an open box item, or i can exchange it for a whole new set. I was thinking of just getting the discount, but, I don't know if this was a display model or anything, and since I was already prepared to spend the 1200 bucks why not just exchange it right? what do you think?

Well when I opened it some of the styrofoam was on an angle and not leaning on the tv [though could've been the car ride home]. then again that stuff is usually pretty secure. all the cables and everything are intact, still tied together and stuff. but if i remember correctly not all the soft paper like protection [the stuff that goes over the entire tv] was on properly. when i first opened it the first sheet was just laying on top. Also the tv stand was already attached. I don't know if that's normal because this is my first LCD :)

So that means I can get free HDTV using the OTA Tuner? Has your friend tried it? I live downtown so I should be able to pick up some good channels. I'm currently uptown visiting my parents, but is it all laid out in the instructions on how to get HD OTA? Have you seen the HD OTA in action?

i tried it 2hrs ago, all you do is hook up an antenna to the antenna input at the back of the tv. you go to menu, and do an "ez scan", it will detect the channels. from there you can view it (using the channel up/down buttons). it's that simple. My antenna is really crappy, but i did get about 4 HD channels.
One of the channels looked really really good on my crappy antenna, i was shocked actually. I think i paid about 5 bucks for that antenna, used it only once to watch a soccer game when the cable was out.
If you intend on using OTA, be sure to get a cool antenna (eg: terk hdtv antenna ).
I have no reason to use it anymore though, because once you buy the tv, you get free 1yr HD programming with rogers.

With the UE model, if the adjust button is pressed on the remote, there is an extra menu option called "Resolution". In there you can set the res @ 1024x768, etc. The UD does not have this option at all.

I think it's random. Both my friend and i got the UD(in toronto), someone in Vancouver got the UE, another person in Toronto got the UE.
If you don't like the TV just carry it back and get it replaced. You have 30 days i think, in which you can exchange/return the tv.
Some things to keep in mind:
UE = 2hdmi, more picture controls, 1366x768@VGA, -1 rf.
I may return mine, not sure. I like the idea of having OTA, this way i can cancel the cable and save some money every month or something. I don't think the UE has OTA.

When did you get it and how many were left? I'm looking for a Best Buy in the GVRD which still has this in stock =( I tried phoning a bit earlier but no response.

i got it at 6am this morning. I'm not sure how many were left because they were handing out tickets to the people who lined up before the store opened. A lot of the smaller tvs were sitting out on the sales floor, but the inventory guy had to go to the back to get it.

UE = 2hdmi, more picture controls, 1366x768@VGA, -1 rf.
I may return mine, not sure. I like the idea of having OTA, this way i can cancel the cable and save some money every month or something. I don't think the UE has OTA.
Couldn't you just get a RF converter? Or does it not have a tuner?

Again, you can get an EXTERNAL OTA HDTV tuner...............................

I just got a LG 42" Plasma from Home Audio/Video 2001 for $999. It's the exact same as the LG 42" Plasma at Best Buy except that it has an HDMI input. It's only EDTV (480p), but I can say that it looks a LOT better than my uncle's Sharp Aquos 37" for SDTV, and somewhat better for DVD movies. The Sharp Aquos would probably outperform it for HD channels, but honestly, I'm already satisfied with this level of quality.
I should also mention that I sit about 11 feet away from my 42" Plasma. I suppose if you sit about 5 feet away a 42" plasma TV while watching SDTV, it would look bad. I also watch TV in a room without bright lighting, so there's no reflections and such.
By the way, I hope people will head to avsforums for GOOD information about televisions, rather than RFD trolls.

mine also has only 1 hdmi port.
I took a look at the TV and it does seem to have two HDMI ports. However, the one that is labelled 1 says DVI in brackets beside it, but it is an HDMI connector.
So it is an HDMI connector, but it is labelled "1 (DVI)". I hooked it up to my HDMI DVD player and it seems to work fine. On my input select there are two HDMIs listed, one is HDMI/DVI and the other is HDMI 2. So I'm guessing this means there ARE in fact two HDMI connections which is nice.
I have my computer hooked up to the TV right now using VGA and it's running at 1360x768 on both the TV and Computer but the picture isn't taking up the full screen for some reason. But when I run both at 1280x768 it takes up the full screen. Is this normal?

I think that the one labeled dvi is the one you are supposed to used if you are connecting a device with a dvi to hdmi adapter. it can still be used as a regular hdmi port.

Waiting for my LG is bad news - I get the email confirmation on the afternoon of December 26 that the TV has shipped, but my Purolator number is still inactive. Talk about a long queue.
I can just imagine the stacks and stacks of packages waiting to be picked up from the FS/BB warehouse, and the line of Purolator trucks filing in and out ...

Purolator tracking sucks! you have to wait a day or 2 before your tracking number will be in their system and you'll receive the package before you even see that it's out for delivery...
Anyway, does anyone think FS will be restocking the 42" Samsung plasma? I managed to get one but the right speaker has a static sound to it.

Thanks,
Would FS be able to do anything for me with a defective product or should I just go to Samsung do you think? I know a lot of manufacturers tell you to go back to the store you bought from if it's within the first 30 days.

Almost picked up a 32" prima at bb today, they had one open box return from the 26th they priced at $499, down from the $599 ad price.
Thought about it for a while, then decided I will wait for a killer deal on a better quality 37"

That's what they had posted, but the returns desk was running full bore when I was in the store to work my shift as an hp rep today.
Man was the place disorganized. No flyers, I wasn't in store on the 26th so I had no idea what was on sale, and the staff didn't either. What a joke, staff was telling customers items were out of stock that they had tons of because it wasn't out for grab and go (1gb flash drives when 300+ still in stock, laptops when 10+ still in stock, desktops and monitors when 10+ in stock, external hard drives when 20+ still in stock) They were too lazy to look or go to the warehouse for the items. A lot of the price tags were not even updated for the sales, pre 25th prices still on the shelf, except for ones crossed out and written in with a black marker. Staff were totally unwilling to help customers too, 5 to 10 at a time hanging around the back area chatting away while customers waited impatiently. If I was a manager there the whole lot would get kicked out just like that. Lazy asses.

I guess that's the flip side of BB staff being on wage and not on commission - although you're not being hounded to buy addons (like FS), if they're a bunch of slackers they have no real motivation to go out of their way to try to help you out.

Okay, the bozos at Purolator screwed up the initial delivery, but I still managed to get the LG 37" here courtesy of my SUV.
It's the new model with two HDMI and the adjustable VGA output, and so far, I am extremely happy with the HDTV. Image quality is great, sound is excellent for built-in speakers, and I hooked up everything but the kitchen sink and still have tons of inputs to spare. It looks super in our living room, and even the OSD and volume/channel display has a nice "high-end" look and feel.
Definitely the best $999 I ever spent on home electronics, and this is with standard Rogers Digital and a 480p DVD player - I can hardly wait to add Rogers HD and an upconverting HDMI DVD player to the mix. LG also gets high marks for their variety of XD Engine-driven aspect ratios.
The only question I have concerns this "Rogers HD Deal". I'm in Ottawa, and there was nothing with my TV, so I'm wondering if this is a TO-only deal or if I should call BB.

Nice. I tried ordering the 37" LG from BB but the site was getting hammered and I couldn't get through. I had to go to FS's website and 'settle' for the 42lc2d :)
I'm looking forward to getting it but I still haven't received the call to arrange for delivery - hopefully next week.
Does anyone know if the 42lc2d has more than the 1 HDMI port that's listed?

I'm not sure of the model they're selling, but my manual was a generic multi-LCD/Plasma one (including the 42LC2D) and it listed 2xHDMI in the diagram.
I'm assuming LG is upgrading all of these models, but again, who knows which one is actually for sale.

Yep, got my LG 37" yesterday afternoon.
I think the authorization killed you. The key is to call VISA each time you're looking to spend $1K or more on a website, and let them know a large online purchase is coming through.
