I didn't know what category to put this in. I do some consulting work on the side, sometimes for individuals sometimes for businesses. Let's say I do work for Joe Smith who has an account at TD. Joe writes me a cheque for $500. Can I go to TD and get it cashed immediately without risking a stop payment or NSF?
Just got burned recently and if I can get the cash more quickly I can go after cheats sooner.

When you cash the cheque, you can ask the teller to check if there are sufficient funds before cashing it. Even at your own bank.

at TD, for us to cash a cheque... we look at many things
first is if the account has sufficient funds
next is your relation with us...
if you've got like everything with us... line of credits, mortgage, multiple investments, ODP's, 9/10 times we'll be okay to cash it depending on the denomination
but if you've got like $2 in your chequing account and thats all you've got with us... tough luck

What if I have no account at all?

I had a similar problem when I was younger, I guy I worked for bounced a check, as soon as he gave me another one I went right to his TD branch and asked them to certify the check. No problems at all (mind you this was maybe 8 years ago)

The home bank has everyone signature on digital file. So if they can match up the signature of the cheque with their records they are usually okay with cashing it.
Otherwise as stated it depends on what kind of customer you are. If you have $2000 in your bank account and you want a $200 cheque cashed, well then your likely a customer who wouldn't bother fruading a $200 cheque. If you had $2 in your account then it would raise some suspicion

I really hope that you read and misunderstood the ops post. either that or I read and misunderstood your reply.
OP said that he had Joe Smith's cheque for $500, and was in Joe Smith's bank and wanted to cash Joe Smith's cheque.
You said "first is if the account has sufficient funds ". Lets assume that he is able to cover the cheque.
Then you said" next is your relation with us..." What does ops relationship to your bank have to do with you cashing the cheque.
If op is in J. Smith's bank, the cheque is good, op has properly identified himself, I see no reason for you not to cash the cheque.
Dave
Edit.....Just reread op's post. He did not say that he was in Joe Smith's branch of the TD. Picked up the difference from GangStarr's post.
So what is it op are you in Joe Smith's branch of the TD ?

For TD. It's not always followed by policy. I mean, one time I went to withdraw some cheque I deposited. I deposited a cheque while withdrawing a cheque at the same time, so it showed up as a code number instead of something clear. Then I told this bank teller, but I already did this once before, and he didn't believe me and said the computer doesn't show it. I was pissed. Anyways, I can cash a cheque instantly with td. I forgot what the other situation was, but I'm glad I'm with PCF now.

YES you can CAN cash a cheque at the cheque-writer's home branch, if you can prove you are the person named on the cheque.
HOWEVER once i went to TD and they refused to cash it, they claimed they had "sent away" the writer's signature because it was a brand new account (it had to be digitized or something? i dunno).
I came back 2 weeks later and they said the signature had returned and they cashed it.
