driving home tonight from bcit trying to get into westbound highway 1. it's bumper to bumper, and there's this pickup truck behind me constantly flashing his high beams.

uhh.. hello? I'm not going slow on purpose. If I could, I would plow through all the cars, but this isn't a video game.

worst is that's he's in a pickup, so his high beams go directly into my rearview mirror.

god damn, I wish I was an undercover cop, people like that deserve to get messed up for being such jerks on the road.

i just ended up taking the grandview turnoff to escape that traffic.

argh, I hate driving in front of trucks. their light is right at the level of the rear and side mirrors.

There should a little flip that turn the rearview mirror for driving at night.

Thats why I LOVE my Bi-Xenon HID's. my Highbeams are flippin brioght as hell. can you imagine pure xenon light in the form of a high beam projector in your rear view window of your car? when trucks high beam and tail me, I let them pass, then go behind them and give them a piece of good ol Ford HID.. THey usually back off and get hte ell out of my way after htey were blinded for a good minute

Isn't that more dangerous than it is... well, fitting?

The whole point of you being mad at them is that their lights are blinding your rear-view, and your driving is thus impared. If you're blinding a truck with a weight class in the dozens of tonnes....

.they probulary think the blue light on the dash means lights ON. morons.

I remember driving home from Canadas Wonderland to Kitchener when I was a teenager. My freind was driving, and she had only recently gotten her license. It took me about 15 to 20 minutes to convince her that she had her parking lights on, not her headlights.

She kept saying "the other cars lights are just brighter than mine". I had to actually get her to turn the lights on, then the high beams to show her what was going on.

I've never been so scared for my life while driving with someone.

It's already been mentioned but chances are the driver behind you was just driving over bumps or the front end raised up when he pressed the gas, giving the illusion of being high beemed.

I usually flash highbeamers that are oncoming traffic. Most of the time they don't even notice what I'm trying to do.

One time that really cracked me up, somebody flashed me back... it went high-low-high. MORONS! :o

On Hwy #1 between Wpg and Calgary I travelled on at last 4 times back and forth the previous year summer, at nights there is often 10+ drivers/truckers on the road with high beams on (from opposite flow and those right behind you) ALL the time. Even the ones I pass on the left and move back to the right lane, the vehicle I just pass would not have the decency to switch to low-beam until I got further away from him.

A fellow tail gated me on the highway in a heavy traffic situation. He thought he could go faster than me if he's in my situation. I lane change to the right and let him by then got back on his ass. Right thing to do? Probably not, but I'm sure he got my message. Have a taste of your own medicine, jerk. :cheesygri

Turn signals still work, so move over. The pickup truck will have to highbeam each car in front till he's at the top.

Alot of traffic is caused by ppl just going too damn slow.

Once me and my friends were killing time by driving to the mall, but some trashy looking dude highbeams us and honking at the same time cuz we changed lanes infront of him to exit the dvp. So, at traffic lights, we would just sit there during green lights, of course there were no cars behind him...we followed him all around the north york region for 20min......hahah good times!

There was no fast lane, there was only ONE lane.

It's already been mentioned but chances are the driver behind you was just driving over bumps or the front end raised up when he pressed the gas, giving the illusion of being high beemed.

I've driven on this path more than enough times to know that the road is pretty smooth. and the fact that he was beaming constantly while sitting idle for 15 seconds gives it away. He was doing this at more than 1 flash/second.

And I did use the flipper thing on the rear view mirror, but it don't fully solve the problem. the lights still reflect off your side mirrors and the light is still going through your car, thus screwing up your night vision.

A tiny tap to the brakes just to light up the lights is not "the brakes game". And if the driver weren't tailgating (driving too FRACKING close) he wouldn't have a reason to get angry. Tailgaters piss me off to no end - even when I'm the passenger.

And what's with the people using their fog lights 24/7? Some of those @$%$ things are as bright as regulars, so you get this WALL of light coming towards you - I'd rather have brights coming at me than some of those !#$%!@#%@!!!~!#!@#%!@~~ fog lights!!

When our family car was in the shop getting some work done, the mechanic gave us a rental car to use for the day. It was some 25+ year old POS car, and the lights didn't work but would randomly kick into highbeam and then shut off. Everytime you made a turn, hit the breaks/gas, rolled down the window, changed the radio station, you name it. The headlights would just flash on and off.

I've never gotten so many middle fingers in my life.

this is understandable...you guys tailgate b/c the guy in front is goign too slow, but what I hate are drivers that tailgate for no reason? I mean what if you can't go any faster due to traffic ...that's when I tap my brakes (I don't ever slam, b/c i dont want the guy behind me to hit me), but .. please, get off my back :(

i totally agree with u, i hate slow cars on fast lane.

Maybe so, but picture this scenario:

Two lanes (Highway 2)
You're driving 120km/h in the slow lane (where you're supposed to STAY unless passing.)
Pass a slowpoke at 100km/h, get into left lane because there's a nice big gap - noone is behind for a good, long distance.
Then an impatient idiot driving 160km/h whips in behind and is planning to RAM you! (Speeding, gained ground faster than anticipated.)

Now I'm gonna' get back into the slow lane as soon as I can, but why should I blast the gas for this idiot who can't slow down a little for a few seconds? It's a big waste of MY fuel and is dangerous to do. Fast lane or not, he's not supposed to be going THAT fast anyways! But these guys in their big pickup trucks like to intimidate cars by threatening to RAM them, and get straight to the bumper - risking the lives of my entire family. Most of the "accident" news reports are from speeding trucks losing control.

A friend of mine and his 13-year-old daughter were murdered by an a$$hole idiot truck driver for that same reason. Speeding, whipping around traffic - lost control - wound up in oncoming traffic and rolled, landing right on the roof of my friend's fan, crushing the heads of my friend and one of his daughters right in front of the rest of the family in the back.

I wish I was a traffic cop so I could give these tailgating, speeding idiots a good blast of 12-gauge paperwork wakeup-call. Maybe the loss of vehicle AND lisence would smarten you schmucks up!

So for those in who don't know the Highway 1 freeway in Greater Vancouver let me paint you a picture

Evening rush hours starts at roughly 3pm and runs till 7pm. The rush hour portion of the freeway starts near the outskirts of Vancouver city proper at 1st Ave and probably starts petering out 1/2 way between Surrey and Langley. Its a 30km stretch of highway with about a dozen exchanges most of which, at that time of day, simply add more traffic onto the freeway as it goes east.

It has 3 lanes. one lane reserved for HOV traffic with at least two people in the vehicle, buses, motorcyles, etc

Post speed limit is 80im for most of it. During rush hours, both non-HOV lanes are packed, bumper to bumper. Most of time your speed is oscillating between 20 to 40km hour. Some bursts up to 60im and that is about it.

For a good majority on this route, there are no alternatives cause this route takes you over the Port Mann bridge across the Fraser River. The other bridge requires rat racing through city traffic and actually takes longer and the other bridge is miles to the south.

There is no need for tailgating and/or light games but some people think its worth it to save 5 minutes on their 1hr commute

Why should you? Because its meant to be used as a passing lane, you shouldnt be cruising in it to begin with. Who are you to decide whats fast enough i.e. 120 or 160? What if its a cop coming up behind you on his way to an emergency? The funny part is you say it yourself "You're driving 120km/h in the slow lane (where you're supposed to STAY unless passing.)".

Pffftt...waste of your gas? Lamest excuse yet for just stubborn pride, as it sounds like there was plenty of space in the other lanes for you.
You call someone doing 160 impatient, I call people who block all lanes of a highway going the same speed ignorant. Prob truth to both.
Let the cops worry about the speeders, not you.

Have courtesy and let whomever is going faster have the lane, it would be a safer place if everyone did. Every think driviers sometimes are "whipping around other cars" because the other cars shouldnt be driving where they are? Think I'm wrong? Next time you see a cop in the fast lane, pull up in front of him and just do the limit. Happened to me, and he gave me a warning for it.

As for the OP getting highbeamed in bumper to bumper traffic, I cant understand this. Never seen it before unless someone was trying to get someones attention i.e. your tire is flat or your coat is stuck outside your door, etc. I once did it because the suv in front of me had somehow left their keys in their rear hatch door (no idea why they werent on the same keychain as the ignition key).

Just a few points to your scenario:

First off, doing 120Km an hour is speeding, so you are just as bad as the people you are complaining about killing your friends.

You also say you pass a "slow poke" doing a 100KM. Why is he a slow poke when he is obeying the posted speed limit?

Perhaps the person riding your ass doing 160KM considers you a slow poke and is doing the same thing to you.

A little hypocritical don't you think?

You'd think knowing someone who experienced a tragedy as you mentioned personally would give you a different perspective on road safety, guess not.

Number one, butt-munchers. Speed limit IS 120 klicks.
Number two, I DID speed up a little to pass. I know what passing means.
Number three, you don't have to be such complete $hits!

Don't even try to defend your $hitty, crazy-speeding driving habits by blasting ME!

I've taken to calling town police to get ready for speeders heading into said town - I've seen a few get busted, too! Maybe the next one will be YOU!

...and I just know you're gonna' try to blast me in a lame defence by mentioning phoning-while-driving. My passenger would make the call.

This is not the same Highway 1 I know in Vancouver today... are you sure you live around here? :D :D

The Highway 1 I know:
Takes 45 minutes to cross Port Mann
Takes 25 minutes to cross Second Narrow
Over 50% of chance one or more stall or accident would happen near the bridge during peak hours.
Brainless people driving on HOV lanes when they only have one passenger.

I also know none of the BC government officials drives on this highway, that's why they came up with this Gayway plan thinking twinning the bridge will help. In fact, twinning the bridge without twinning every single road in GVRD will not help. I WANT A FREAKING SKYTRAIN RUNNING THROUGH SURREY TO WHITE ROCK, SURREY TO GUILDFORD, GUILDFORD TO LANGLEY TO ABBOSTFORD, A SHORT RAIL FROM ABBOSTFORD TO MISSION, AND ANOTHER SKYTRAIN FROM MISSION TO THE TRI-CITY. Funny no one in Victoria would listen to me.
