View Full Version : Feeling constantly lethargic

Hi, does anyone know why I am constantly lethargic, furthermore, how do I stop feeling lethargic?

It seems as if I'm always tired, nor am I ever mentally alert. Like sometimes I'm doing my homework, and I either write the question down wrong, or I do things like 2-2=4.

Could be a ton of things.. for me I was kind of like that, the more I slept the more tired I felt... used to sleep about 10 hours a day and felt like crap, now I only sleep about 5-6 and feel a lot more energetic.

have there been any changes to your daily routine? any new arising like stress?

If feel concerned about your tiredness and if there are other corresponding symptons (as many things cause tiredness) go see your Family doctor.

otherwise drink tea to get your day going. dont drink coffee or those highly caffeinated drinks like redbull.

No not really.
Sort of, mainly to due ongoing academic concerns.

I don't drink tea, nor do I drink coffee/caffeinated drinks.

Did you write that right? You slept 21 hours? :|

Or did you mean 9 hours?

It could be anything that's hard to tell, keep making improvements until you feel better.

if you're not going through any significant changes in your life that could be causing it, perhaps you should go see a doctor. check your iron levels..could be low.

i've actually had the same problem. for a period of two weeks I would be dead tired when I got home from school. then I'd sleep until 8 just in time for supper. so for me it was a phase, i think bcuz of school work. or it could have been hormonal changes in my system, i dunno.

r u in high school or university? because it's close to time for mid-terms and prepping for it.

anyways it may just be the school load and you're adjusting to it. but go see your doctor to be sure.

Since the start of this school year, I have had some pretty bad (imo) fatigue problems. I am always weak and tired. I've been to doctors, trying to figure out what this is, and still am lost. I am hoping nothing serious is wrong with me. I've been getting sick easy and everything (must be my crappy immune system.) My asthma has been acting up too. Oh, and some days I've been sleeping like 17-18 hours, and still being tired.

unless it seriously effects your life, dont worry about it...
eg. you cant eat/sleep/work/ or be social

Yeah, my mistake...12pm.You slept 12pm to 9pm? Those are some pretty bad sleep habits.

I know I feel best when I get a solid 7-8 hours of sleep, starting from midnight or earlier. Oversleeping or sleeping later/waking later makes me feel tired all day.

what is your age?
I read once that young males need a lot of sleep because their body is growing / changing.

otherwise:
you can try exercising regularly
or read about depression
or read about amenia
and see if the info sounds like your situation

try drinking tea or ginseng if you want.
eat good diet.
walking in sunshine is good too.

Probably. I'm 14, so this may be why I'm randomly experiencing this now.
I am also a lazy piece of crap who gets little exercise, so that could be it too. With my asthma and all I seem to be using that as a excuse a little bit too much. Just that I've been suffering this year and whenever I seem to do anything athletic some asthma problems start up :\.

- Hit the gym, play some sports, maybe work out. But your 14 so maybe just play sports. :D
- Eat well, all 3 meals and full breakfast. Minimize fast food to once a week or less.
- Take some centrum multivitamins in the morning after milk or OJ.
- Get 8 hours sleep.
- Organize your schedule so you don't have too much stuff going on.
- Socialize. Be around people and have fun.
- Sitting in front of a computer 4 hours everyday makes you VERY tired.

I used to feel the same way you did. The above is working well for me.

So.....if I get the math right?
you are awake 3 hours a day? because 9pm till 12 am is 3 hours,

You might have some health problem you don't know about, like low iron or kidney problems or something worse?
I'd go see a doctor or something so they can do a bunch of tests.

He mean't 12 am to 9 am apparently.
I on the other hand am sometimes sleeping 15+ hours a day. I was mentioned about the iron thing before, but doctor never did blood test for some reason. It might have been because I was being tested for mono when I went in that last time. Luckily it came back negative, although I still don't know why I am so weak. I don't have a very good sleeping pattern, I don't eat very healthy (so so, but I eat on an irregular schedule at weird times), and I am lazy, so that might be the answer to my problems. Just that it came out of nowhere recently that I'm clueless.

Same here buddy, I wake up...long #2, shower, then run 10 bucks to school.... After, I get home, eat, sleep from 5/6-11/12 (sometimes later), wake up.... do homework. Repeat. Very hard to do any work because I'm always so tired and feel so out of it.

Recently, it's gotten really bad.... Sleep from 5/6-11/12, wake up intermittently, can't fully get up to do hw...finally get up at 6/7 in the morning and do hw before going to school.

I wish everything was more relaxed and easy going.

iron deficiency isnt that common in guys..
if your a meat eater, its hard to not have enough iron.
a hamburger would get you close to 100% of your RDA of iron...
a few slices of chicken.. etc... its not that hard.

Try sleeping 6 hours...
and actually try doing something when you are awake (i.e. not watching tv or on the internet). Take a 45 minute nap when you get a tired and get back up and do something.

Just don't lie around doing nothing.
You need to build your energy level back up.

Have you seen your doctor about this ?

Could be anything from poor eating / sleeping habits ( i.e blood sugar etc. ), allergies, thyroid, SAD, depression etc. etc. etc.

Further to Depression & fatigue...

Iron deficiency certain may be an issue , and if low iron is because meat consumption is low, a multivitamin should help.

Either way, he should see his GP just to be sure.

it aint that hard tho... just 1 burger, 1 sandwhich and most guys are @ 100% RDA of Iron.. its different for females tho.

most people eat meat like crazy, especially in north america. so iron is usually not a concern.

That's what I was going to suggest. Diabetes will keep you down, tired, and sleeping a lot. Not having it managed can cause huuuuuge problems down the road. See your doctor, get some bloodwork. Whether it's diabetes, iron deficiency, anemia or a lot of other things mentioned in this thread, they can all be detected through some simple blood work. I'm diabetic and I really can feel when my blood sugar is out of whack. That said, it's so easily managed with meds and the sooner the better. The fact that your 'chubby' is another indication that it might be diabetes. If it its, you're going to want to do something about you weight before chubby turns into something worse. The first things you're doctor will tell you if you're diabetic are

1) lose weight
2) get active
3) watch your diet...there's a lot to know about the do's and don'ts when it comes to diabetes, no point going into it all know, but it's not at all difficult to keep stuff out of your diet that contributes to diabetes.

At your age, you really should have tons of energy, though I'm sure having asthma would affect that. You really need to see a doctor.
