4x4 not AWD ;)

Full time 4 wheel drive only 4 high or 4 low when the rear axle slips the front axle auto grabs through a viscous coupling in the transfer case. So you don't have to worry about when to put it in 4x4 just get in and go rain or snow or mud or dry pavement you cant do any damage to the transfer case. Thats the simple explanation not 100% accurate. This is a great system for my wife, we got the same thing on her new Durango.
