View Full Version : How much cash do you carry in your wallet?
alexei

How much do you generally carry cash wit you. Obviously when you carrying too much cash , you will be losing interest on it but we still need cash to buy the small things or do you always use cards.
and if you do carry cash, how regular do you take more out, do you take more out when you have none or when you hit a certain level of cash.

I try to use cash for all my eating out and small spending habits, it allows me to track things a bit better and make me actually realize the cost of things.
ie: for some reason if i give away a $20 bill it seems like a lot more than charging $20 to my visa.
I'm aiming for $100 a week or so spending cash, maybe less.
Sylvestre
Dec 6th, 2006, 05:36 PM
usually no more than a 100 at any given time, which gets whittled down during the week. Usually never less than 20.
If I'm going out downtown or something, I carry more.
I try to use zero debit/credit so everything is cash. (I don't care about credit cards that have rebates. Rather just not use cc's).

I usually try to carry $100+ in my wallet.
This way, I have enough for almost all my purchases (restaurants, etc..) if debit/credit don't work.

Right now $445, but i just went to the bank the other day. I usually carry a few hundred bucks.
The bank doesn't pay any interest worth worrying about, so that is a moot point.

I usually only carry around $20 in cash...use this to pay at small convenience stores or Timmies. If I have to buy gas I also pay in cash. All other purchases debit/credit.

cool, so how much do you guys withdraw at a time, most of you say you carry around 20, once ur done the 20, do you go back to the machine to get another 20? or do you withdraw like 100s and keep it at home?
I wish i had a bank machine at home lol

I carry near-zero and maybe some if I am going to a bar or something
I put absolutely everything I can on my credit card. I think I'm good with only spending what I know I can pay off.
I get 1% cash back. It really isn't that much, but when you get 1% back on EVERYTHING you spend, it adds up... and whatever the amount, it beats getting $0 free!

Well, I almost have zero cash or may be pennies in my purse. For whatever reason I can't keep cash in wallet. It just keeps me anxious/uneasy till I use all of it.

Corizzle
Dec 6th, 2006, 10:40 PM
At school only around $10 because of the much higher risk of it getting stolen
If I'm shopping, normally $60 unless I plan to buy something big
Never use Debit card and only use Credit Card so I can start earning good credit to my name. I pay the bill off as soon as it comes and only buy something if I have at least three times the cash to make sure I have the cash to pay it off

Usually anywhere from $20-60, for lunch, coffee, and so on. I feel uneasy when I get to < $10 since that won't buy me a decent lunch + drink. Everything else I put on credit card for points - however, I do lose track of purchases...

typically like $20 - $50 in cash
but that cash could last me a month as i typically run everything on credit
even a $0.94 can of arizona from walmart... all credit
and i rarely visit the ABM's... i just pay for a full meal on credit and my buddies give me cash... its like a cash advance minus the interest

Silly? No, it's smart (assuming you pay it off every month). Security is not a concern, cardholders are not responsible for fraudulent transactions.

I was under the impression a signature wasn't required for <$25 purchases. Don't know if there is any truth to that.
However, I often don't get asked to sign for fast food.

Signature is required pretty much for all transactions of any amount, except when you use your credit card for gas at pay at the pump and some fast food restaurants.

$80, and usually try to have between $40 and $100 just in case debit is down or it can only be a cash only purchase. Previous poster nailed it when they said the "lost" interest income is negligible.

Personally i feel uncomfortable if i had below 20 cause i make a lot of these small purchases but for big purchase obvioulsy put it a card. But i feel aight if i had 60-80 in my wallet.
The interest would have been forgone if you had a ing direct account. Ur cash could be earning interest instead sitting in ur wallet.

The OP question should be answered with more details, ie. life stage, working or student, age, etc.
I would understand, being a student, carrying $0 purposely because it may be difficult to have any money left over after tuition, transit fares, and books/supplies, but $0 if you're a full-time worker... ;)
That said, full-time worker, a lot of my monthly expenses are on cc (amex, with airmiles rewards). Once in a while when eating out with a group of ppl, I'd pay by card and everyone else gives me their share of the bill in cash. That or ATM, hundred at a time, usually twice a month max unless I'm meeting up with an RFD'er for a purchase. :cheesygri

Right now I have $35 broken down into the following:
1x$20 bill
1x$10 bill
1x$5 bill
I've been putting everything on cc due to points for the past couple of years, and pay the balance every month so I pay zero interest.
I hate having change and bills, usually only taking cash when I know I'm going to a bar or for poker night.
After work I will be getting a haircut, leaving me with 1x$10 bill. That should last me for about a week.

sometimes spare change (for parking) but mostly zero dollars in my wallet .... funny cause i once had a person ask if i had any cash to spare, i politely said no and he said: "oh you must only use debit/credit cards, i've been getting alot of those types lately"
i don't think we'll ever go to a cashless society, and rely exclusively on plastic money but for safety sake i feel more secure carrying only my debit/credit card around (plus there's ton of debit/ATMs all around the corner if ever i need cash)

in case you didnt know, you can use credit cards at unlikely places like 7-11 to buy lotto tickets, bus tickets, or anything in the store.
in Vancouver at least, cash is mostly needed only at 'lower class' ethnic restaurants and some local shops.
even the mcdonalds here takes visa.

I usually keep 20-40 in my wallet. Use my CC and debit card to do most of the purchases. Just same as the most ppl here, try to earn more points and make it easier to keep track of all of my expenses.
I do most of my money withdraws by using the cash back system. For instance, going to walmart and buy a pack of gum for $1 or so and cash back from 20-60 dollars. Cuse I am using the pc banking, and the area I live in doesn't have too many CIBC so it's a lot easier for me to do a cash back whenever I need to use the money. Instead of making a trip to CIBC or pay extra fee by going to others bank to make a withdraw.:cheesygri

That is unless I feel bad for a certain merchant who is going to have to pay slightly more for me using that CC, and only then will I bust out the debit card/cash.

Full time worker here. I usually carry only $20 on me at a time in case of any emergencies (coffee, bus fare, etc). I pay for absolutely everything with either my Airmiles Amex or debit card if they don't take cc. I pay my credit card bills at the end of the month all the time so I never have to pay interest charges. I don't see why some people are so against using debit or credit cards. It's just so much more convenient. I *love* putting $2 or less on the credit card sometimes. :)

1. debit card is not safe in my book. Credit card is much more safer. If you are scammed, it is much harder than credit card to get your money back. Bascially, you have to fight with the merchant to get money back instead of the bank.
2. cash discount.
For me, credit card always. If there is cash discount, may be cash. Never debit unless in some odd situation.

Last night I had an interesting dilema:
I went to a popular chinese food place just off Pharmacy and Sheppard ;). The bill came to $30, and all I had was $20 in my debit account and $10 cash. The rest of my family left the restaurant and was waiting for me in the car.
I usually pay by credit card, but I don't happen to have a VISA card, only MC. This place only accepts VISA, Debit, and of course cash. So I was in a bind. I was about to run out to the car and bum some money off my wife, but I asked the cashier if it was okay if I paid the bill in 2 parts, $20 in debit and $10 cash. She said fine, she pocketed the $10 and changed the bill to $20.
So based on that, I'm always going to carry a minimum of $50 in my wallet, as well as apply for a VISA card :)

I never have to worry about not having enough cash because there are banks virtually everywhere. Most of the time, I use my credit card wherever it is accepted, even for small purchases (<$5)...I found that I spend much LESS money this way than if I carry a stack of cash in my pocket. This also helps me to keep track of my spending every month.
I've never had any problems and never got charged from the banks (debit/credit)...

This thread should have been a poll. lol
But anywho, I usually carry around $10-$40 on me. I spend cash very quickly, so at least this limits my spending when I see my wallet emptied out. I only purchase things that are planned on my credit card, no impulse buys. That way, I can receive the rewards without worrying about overspending.
