Mike Vanderjagt's short, but rocky. tenure as the Cowboys' kicker is over.

ESPN's Ed Werder reports that Dallas has released Vanderjagt and signed Martin Gramatica to replace him.

The most accurate field goal kicker in NFL history, Vanderjagt, who signed a three-year contract worth nearly $6 million as an unrestricted free agent this spring, has converted only 13 of 18 field goals. That's only two fewer misses in 11 games as the nine-year veteran had in the past three seasons combined.

In his eight seasons with the Colts, a tenure sometimes marked by petulance and marred by a long-standing feud with quarterback Peyton Manning, he converted 87.5 percent of his field goal attempts.

Ironic, I drove by his HUGE house in Kilbride on the weekend - he actually has NFL goal posts with netting set up on his front / side yard...most amazing thing I've seen.

Nice bio on this guy ( fom Oakville ) in this link.....

What a tool. He has the easiest job on the field and he screws it up by questioning himself.

lol vanderjagt couldnt get along with peyton, T.O. couldnt get along with mcnabb, and now these two are close friends. T.O. defended him today, but nothing bad. He was actually saying good stuff, but questioned his release. He even said that vanderjagt didnt loose them games, but T.O. himself lost dallas some games.

And why didnt they just keep vanderjagt, and let him practice and sign gramattica anyways? Gramatticas made 1 field goal in the last 3 years

Can say i didn't shed a tear

Vandy is Canadian so yes it's not good knowing a fellow Canuck is going through some rough times but he ran his mouth off way too many times.

Which makes you wonder why T.O is still in Dallas - can't imagine Vandy being any more mouthy than him.

Well poedua, that's a valid point but allow me to add that I would say T.O. as a receiver, is more valuable than Vandy as a kicker, especially to the Cowboys team right now with a relatively new QB at the helm in the name of Tony Romo.

Vandy has had a good run in the NFL, i will definitely give him that. However, he has somewhat struggled this season, inconsistent to put it that way and i believe his contracts also have something to do with his release. We will never really know what goes on behind the scenes really but my points is I do fully believe that Vandy would be better off letting his feet do the talking and not his mouth.

Fair enough.

He may have struggled of late - granted. But I think if I was Parcell's I'd want to replace him with a kicker of equal or superior completion rate. Some insight on his replacement Gramatica...

" Gramatica hasn't kicked fulltime since the 2004 season with Tampa Bay, when he was released after missing three field goals less than 40 yards (one was blocked) in the 11th game. To that point, he had made just 11 of 19 kicks for the Bucs that season, but only two of his last nine.

Gramatica was picked up later in the season by his former Tampa Bay head coach Tony Dungy, who needed a kickoff guy for the final four games because of Vanderjagt's inadequacies.

There was a problem though for Gramatica, who had shown up on the Tampa Bay injury report the first week in November with a strained hip. Evidently, it was more than a strain, since Gramatica had surgery in June of 2005 to repair tears in his lower abdomen and abductor. At the time he claimed the injuries were the reason for his poor performance in 2004, and really, in 2003, when he made just 16 of 26 attempts after never making less than 79 percent of his kicks his first four years with the Buccaneers.

So Gramatica spent the 2005 season rehabbing.

Well, Parcells gained some serious insight on Gramatica after he signed with New England on April 6, the Patriots' first stab at replacing the departed Adam Vinatieri. Then New England, where Parcells' son-in-law Scott Pioli is the vice president of player personnel, used a fourth-round pick on University of Memphis kicker Stephen Gostkowski.

"Until he got hurt," Parcells points out, "he was an 80-percent kicker," and darn well knew he was a "92-percent kicker (actually 91.7) in the playoffs."

Maybe it was just the change, but Parcells already seems more at ease with his kicker, even knowing Gramatica has made one 20-yarder since Oct. 24, 2004, having missed his last three attempts that year, along with having another blocked "

......should be interesting ....I especially like the Parcell's " son-in-law " angle on all of this :)

I didnt know you've been there, thats why I said guelph line, beacuse its a major road. But you take guelph line up to dundas, and then onto cedar springs. Its closer if you use brant, its basically infront of brant.

That's cool, I play tennis at the club in Kilbride. I thought for a second you might be confusing Campbellville or Lowville which are on Guelph Line. And you're right Brant turns into Cedar Springs @ Dundas

I'm sure Vanderjagt will land somewhere in the NFL.
He seems to have a problem though sometimes with saying stupid things.

Perhaps Vandy thinks he's still the hotshot from his CFL days! Sorry bud but you ain't in Kansas no more.

Outspoken kicker in the NFL ? I would tend to think it is far and few in between. Like i said before, just let your feet do the talking. I am sure he has learnt his lesson after Peyton gave him a new moniker on the air.

But I agree with you, he will land a job somewhere, not entirely sure how the money thing will work out (he just signed a new 3 year contract this off season with the Cowboys) but there are a lot of teams around the league desperate for a good kicker and Vandy is one.

Well, there might be an argument for him to still think of himself as a " hot shot " in the NFL as well.

He's certainly earned that right...he's still the most accurate kicker ( field-goals ) in NFL history after all.

I like to draw some comparisons between Vandy's signing with the Cowboys and Edge's signing with the Cardinals

Both have struggled immensely with their respective new teams. Vandy got cut and Edge is not going anywhere with that offensive line. I believe he has one of the lowest, if not the lowest average per carry in the whole league. That can't be fun!

Would they be in these situations if they agree to stay with the Colts for less money and aim for a shot at the Super Bowl ? I highly doubt that but again people like to say it's not about the money. I would think otherwise

Nevertheless, I wonder how much friction there was between Peyton and Coach and Vandy (He even criticized Dungy live on the air for Christ's sake) and if that played a factor in Vandy not being resigned by the Colts (or his willingness to seek out greener pastures)

I am surprised Vandy hasn't been picked up by now

Oakland can certainly uses a kicker with its struggling offense...Janikowski missed 2 crucial FGs yesterday that could have sealed the deal :(
