Service Notice: CCD Image Sensor Advisory (Updated Oct.31, 2006)
It has come to our attention that the vendor-supplied CCD image sensor used in certain Canon digital cameras and digital video camcorders may cause the following malfunction: When the product is used in recording or playback mode, the LCD screen and/or electronic viewfinder may exhibit either a distorted image or no image at all. While reports of this malfunction have been rare in the United States, we have determined that it may occur if the product is exposed to hot and humid environments.
Affected products:
- Camcorders: ZR60, ZR65 MC, ZR70 MC, ZR80, ZR85, ZR90, ELURA 40 MC, ELURA 50
- Digital Cameras A60, A70, A75, A300, A310, S230, SD100, SD110, A40(*), A80(*), A85(*), A95(*), S1 IS(*), S60(*), S200(*), S330(*), S400(*), S410(*), S500(*)
*Models added as of Oct.31, 2006
Malfunction:
It has been confirmed that the connecting parts of the internal wiring of the CCD used in affected products may become disconnected, especially if the affected products are stored or used in high-temperature and high-humidity environments. If this occurs, the signal is not output from the CCD normally in Shooting Mode, which may cause a distorted image or the absence of an image. This malfunction can be confirmed on the LCD monitor screen during shooting. The same malfunction also appears on the recorded image.
Canon's Response:
Effective immediately, and regardless of warranty status, Canon will repair, free of charge, the products listed above exhibiting the above-mentioned malfunction if Canon determines that the malfunction is caused by the CCD image sensor.
Canadian residents are kindly directed to contact the Canon Customer Information Centre for further assistance at 1-800-OK CANON. Support hours are Monday thru Friday - 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM (EST). Alternatively, if electronic support is preferred, please send your email using the Contact Us tab above.
We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused by this issue, and appreciate your understanding in this matter. Thank you for your support and patronage of Canon products.

This sounds like part of the Sony camera recall for the same problem(s). IIRC, most of Canon's p&s use Sony sensors. If this is part of the Sony recall, then it's another black eye for them.

This guy (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/read_opinion_text.asp?prodkey=canon_a530&opinion=33559) says he got an A530 "in exchange for my broken A70, which I think is excellent service from Canon."
That post is dated Oct 2006. Might be USA though.

just an update.. i saw this thread first.. and remembered that my old SD100 seemed to have the same sort of issue so i dropped the camera off in 'sauga.. 2 weeks later through puralator not only did i get a working camera.. but i got a brand new SD200! so yea.. not the latest camera on the market (or even close) and i bought a new one after that (A620) but a good deal nevertheless.. so to try to break your old Canon cameras.. i suggest doing what i did. Leave it in ur glove department box 24/7 till the screen doesnt come on. lol.

I had an a70 with this problem. I just resigned to the "Electronics fail" philosophy. I don't think i would have chucked it, I tend to be a packrat when it comes to electronics, but I can't find it anywhere in my house. :-(

Hopefully you will find it because you do not need warranty to get this fixed!

my a75 broke, they just repair it, they don't give you a new one
it clearly states that too on the canon's website...not sure who decided to start the rumour that they give you a new one...

I had an A70 with identical screen problems. Got an rma and returned the camera to Sun Camera on Steeles Avenue West. The person told me they repair the original camera and hasn't heard of anyone getting a new or refurbished replacement.

I have a out-of-warranty A75 a different malfunction... maybe I should store or use it in a high temperature, high humidity environment to try to get it to malfunction so it qualifies for a recall.

I have an A85 that's in perfect condition. Hopefully, if it fails in 5 years, Canon will still honor the recall. I love my A85. Very decent manual control for a P&S and small enough to bring anywhere.

Today it is Leap Day, 2008 and this very problem just occurred on my beloved s230 which was purchased in Feb, 2003. The customer service experience was top notch and the recall is still honored to this day. My repaired camera should return in 2 to 3 weeks. Canon - great products and great service. :)

Sweet!
I have a SD100 that went nuts last year - the screen became distorted. But until then, it has taken easily over 10,000 pictures.
I think it is a guarantee that they WILL NOT have any more SD100's in stock
If I can get back at least a SD400, I'll be a happy camper.

This is not an exchange program. You file RMA with Canon, if they approve they ask you to send it to your nearest authorized repair centre. They will replace the CCD...but you are responsible for other repairs out of warranty.
Just a note to others: repair centres know if you tinkered inside your camera so don't break it on purpose. Some jokers in the U.S. did this when Canon's warranty extension was announced several years ago and had their broken cameras returned or were billed for extra repairs. Repairs are performed by "Independent Authorized Shops"

Boo... the camera is still perfect in every way... in fact, I think I might take some before pics to prove that point.
Hopefully they can NOT repair it then... heck, I'd be happy to have a working SD100...

wouldn't it be cheaper for them to send a new camera rather than spend time and money on fixing my old camera? either way, thank you very much for this info!
i have an old A70 camera that had some problem with photos. some of them, especially white areas came out filled with purple for some reason and I never bothered to do anything with it, so I sent Canon an email.

Did you bring your cameras into the repair service centre or did you mail them in?
I got an email from Canon today where it just says to "forward the camera to one of the following Canon repair centres"..
I'd rather save on shipping and risk damage to the lenses and just bring the camera into the store..

I just mailed my S230 via Xpresspost signature required to the Mississauga location at 1400 Courtney Park Drive East Mississauga ON, L5T1H1
My display was shot within video and camera mode. Research showed me it was the CCD, I called canon they said just send it in with a letter with my info on it.
I paid about 9 bucks shipping, I hope I get it repaired. I thought it was the end of it. I'd be really happy if they do replace with a newer model, but repaired would do just fine.

Going to have to keep an eye on my S1 IS as well - it's on the list of models with the bad ccd as well...

Imagine my surprise when I popped in batteries into my old Powershot A70 and the LCD displayed the image with bands of pulsating horizontal strips. I decided to purchased a refurb Powershot SD1000 to replace my A70, for $150 and $15 delivery, from the Canon eStore. I discovered the SD1000 had a white pixel defect on the CCD displaying on videos and photos. I spoke to Canon tech and they said send the unit to their Mississauga service depot. Hardly fair since I had to cover delivery costs again. I figured I might as well ship the A70 for servicing as well re: Service Notice: CCD Image Sensor Advisory.
Likely someone returned the SD1000 to some retail store and it ended up as a Canon eStore refurb which they sold to me. Staples offers free delivery (over $100) and in the case of a defective product they would have covered return costs on defective unit. Unfortunately they didn't have any $150 (new) SD1000s in stock. Now it is a wait and see. Hopefully they won't scratch up the SD1000 I just purchased.

As of today, Purolator shipped me my canon camera. As I was expecting to see the repaired camera, I opened the box and saw a refurbished SD630 Digital Elph Camera.
I am very pleased with their service, just took a while but hey its free.
I have to buy an SD card now, because the other one was Compact Flash 256 mb.
If anyone needs the box and manuals for the SD230 please let me know as I have no further use for it. Also I can trade something for the 256mb compact flash and the original 16mb flash it comes with. I also have a USB compact flash reader I can include. Gift cards or anything would do.

Funny - today I decided to call them to check status on my submission and was told my refurb sd630 was shipped today!
Not bad, but considering I did pay $550 + tax for my s230 and sd630's can be bought on eBay refurb'd for $150, I think Canon's doing OK.
Now, maybe my S1 will suffer the same fate and magically turn into an S5...

My old A70 just started having this issue after many years of service. (blank screen with purple lines and same image when taking pictures) It seems if you have an older SD or S model, you may get a newer refurb but if you have an A70/A75, you'll get your repaired camera back. I'll call 1-800 OK CANON and let them know but I'm in no hurry since I have 2 other cams that I use.

I think you'll be fine and there isn't an expiry limit on the warrranty according to the official canon statement. My previous link has comments from June 08 and people are still getting their replacements. I think they just had to pay shipping to Missisauga.
Thanks for the suggestion Blackjack. I just tried that and it didn't work. No worries...I'm in no hurry to fix this.:)

I don't think it's too late. I just took my A70 in yesterday for the same problem (lucky for me the service centre in Calgary is down the street from where i work). No questions asked. No receipt required. They just gave me a order number and letter stating it is covered under warranty and will fix and ship back to me. Now the wait...

For those who shipped it.
Do you just ship the camera?
I've got the full retail package which i wont need so i'd want to get rid of it but I guess it would cost more to send to them.
What carrier did you use?
Thanks.

My S500 was showing red lines/stripes in the LCD and also when you look at the pictures they were like reddish/purple tint.
So after doing some googling I found out that this a known problem and there is a recall from Canon
So I dropped my S500 camera at the misssissauga location - today i got an email with estimate of $157.07 .. WTF ??
Is this problem not part of the recall?
Is my camera not part of the recall
So why are they sending me the estimate???
Did anyone else got the same response?
Thanks

I had a S1 IS which showed problems (distorted images with purple-pink tint) some 2 years ago, and I finally sent it in last week on the 15th.

OK so I am having a similar issue with my Cannon PowerShot A85. We can take pictures and everything on the LCD looks fine during the process except when we display the picture it has a blurry red tint with horizontal lines across it. I can do video just fine but all pictures display and download with the tint and lines. Could this be related to the CCD issue as the display is fine just the pictures are not.

It started about 3 weeks ago, good the distorted screen but after a couple of shakes it started working again.
Now there are times I just get a blue screen of death.
I have maybe used this cam about 6 tapes worth, got it for my daughters first X-mas, so usage has been very light.
Hopefully they could fix it, really love the 22x zoom!
Will give an update!

Called up Canon today and they suggested to take it to the McNicoll location since it is the nearest location for repairs.
Went to the repair centre after work , after describing my problem to the front desk lady she tells me that it didn't seem to be the CCD since it is working again. I told her that it sometime works and sometime I get the scramble zig zag screen.
I mentioned that Canon said that it is a defective CCD and that they will repair it for free, then she mentioned that it could be a combination of CCD and something else and there may be charges.
Hopefully everything goes well!!

I bough my cam on December 24 or 26, 2004 so it is almost 4 years and it hasn't been used heavily.
The trouble started about 6 weeks ago when my wife decided to film the baby and it constantly gave a zig zag distorted picture. Well after shaking it a couple of times it started working again. This lasted for about another 3 weeks when we wen't to Japan and the same problem again.
After a couple of shakes it started working but later just got a black screen, thought it was the battery but after putting in fresh battery I realized that it wasn't.
Still waiting, hopefully it could be fixed...

Just got my Canon Zr90 back today, and no charge, it's working great again!
The bill was just under $200 but of coarse no charge since it is under warranty from Canon.
They replaced the following:
CCD IC
CCD PCB
This is the reason why I"ll keep on purchasing Canon because of the CR!
Great service at the McNicoll location.

It is on McNicoll just East of Victoria Park. I believe it is 1050 McNicoll, if you are going North on Victoria Park, turn right (East) on Mc Nicoll and the first units you will see will be on you left hand side (North about 75-100 feet). Keep an eye out because it is right after a large industrial building (located on the corner of McNicoll and Victoria Park.
Update: On mapquest it is indicating Pharmacy and McNicoll, so it is still 1050 McNicoll
Update again:Aab-Tech Electronics Inc 1050 McNicoll Avenue (416)490-0200
Hope this helps
