Stupid Newbie question here...

Is it true that once you mod a PS2/Xbox, you can't play online anymore?

nonanon
Oct 18th, 2003, 01:18 PM
firehawk12:
There are no such things as stupid questions. Only stupid answers, so the pressure is on me ;)

All current-generation PS2/Xbox modchips can be turned off. Some chips have the feature built-in while others use an external switch. The PS2 modchip that I carry, the DMS3, has the "sleep mode" feature built-in (press and hold the eject button for about 1 second when booting the system). The Xbox chip that I offer, the Xecutor 2.2 Lite, employs and external switch (simply make sure the switch is in the "disabled" position before you boot the system).

Keep in mind that you cannot play backups online. Make sure you use original discs when going online.

Edit 10/18/03: Oops, just realized I didn't directly answer your question. Yes, you can still play online with a modded console. But like I said, just make sure you use original discs.

firehawk12
Oct 18th, 2003, 08:40 PM
Okay... so if you screw up and forget, you're SOL?:)

nonanon
Oct 19th, 2003, 09:52 AM
I can only advise you on the proper use of the console once modded. Ultimately, it is the end-user's responsiblity to make sure you are using the console properly. So yes, you would be SOL if you forgot to turn off the modchip.

Microsoft will ban your Xbox from their online service and Sony will simply not allow the game to start (RSOD - Red Screen of Death). As far as I know, Sony does not have a "ban" system in place (yet?).

So remember to always disable your modchip when going online, and always use your original discs for online play.

If you need an Xbox chip, I do have X-B.I.T. chips in stock, but in a very small quantity. These chips come with a pin-header adapter, wire adapter, and pogo pins for the ultimate choice in Installation methods. Hi I was just wondering what the difference is between the DMS3 chip and the MagicV chip (for PS2)? I have an earlier model if that's important.

nonanon
Dec 2nd, 2003, 02:30 PM
The Magic V is your basic no-swap modchip with sleep mode for online gaming. Unfortunately, the Magic V is only compatible with v5-v8 PS2's.

The DMS3 has several other features built-in. The most appealing feature is software upgradeablity. The DMS3 v2 is compatible with v1-v8 consoles.

What it all comes down to is price. If you can afford it, go with the DMS3 because it's upgradeable. If you want a lower-cost, no-frills alternative, then go with a Magic V.

si2k78: PM me (http://www.redflagdeals.net/forums/index.php?act=Msg&CODE=04&MID=3321) and we can make the appropriate arrangements. Tax is not allowed to be charged when selling on these forums, therefore no taxes are charged on anything for sale here.

Inventory update:
Xecutor 2.3 chips have been delayed from the manufacturer. ETA is tentatively set for December 10.

Magic V 50k chips are now in stock and on sale! See main post for details.

PS2 v7 systems are becoming harder to find now. Soon all PS2 Premods will include a v9 PS2. v9 modchips are slightly more expensive and slightly more difficult to install, so get a v7 while they're still available!

Dec 4th, 2003, 09:42 AM

I am working on getting some DMS3 v9 chips in. I am probably not going to carry the Matrix chip since the Magic V 50k is much cheaper and the DMS3 v9 will only be slightly more expensive.

If you need a v9 chip right away, I do have Magic V 50k chips in stock. In fact they are on sale for a few more days. See my main post for details.

I hope to have all inventory issues resolved this week. I have been assured by my suppliers that my stock should be arriving this week.

Among those expected to arrive is the DMS3 v9 chip. Pricing is tentatively set to be $10 more than the DMS3 v2 chip, and Installs/Premods are tentatively set to be around $15 more.

Due to overwhelming demand, I have decided to permanently reduce all Magic V/Magic V 50k products to the promotional prices of this week. Many thanks for everyone's support!

Inventory Update:
- DMS3 v2 chips are back in stock.
- A small shipment of DMS3 v9 chips are expected to arrive early next week.
- Magic V and Magic V 50k in stock and selling well.
- DMS X-B.I.T. chips are almost sold out! Order yours now, as the next shipment will not arrive until the new year!
- Xecutor 2.3 Lite chips could arrive as early as tomorrow, but are more likely to arrive early next week.

- I have dropped pursuit of Xecutor 2.3 Pro chips since demand was not very high and it is only a few dollars cheaper than the DMS X-B.I.T. I apologize to those that did express interest. However, I may be able to special-order some in for those that are still interested. PM me (http://www.redflagdeals.net/forums/index.php?act=Msg&CODE=04&MID=3321) for details.
- Is anybody interested in a PS2 DUO chip? I am considering stocking these chips. PM me (http://www.redflagdeals.net/forums/index.php?act=Msg&CODE=04&MID=3321) for details.

- Added a Pre-Owned v7 PS2 w/DMS3 Premod and free 8MB memory card for sale for $325
- Added a Pre-Owned Xbox w/Xecutor 2.2 Lite Premod and free cross-over cable for $300. This Xbox has a Samsung Drive and stock 8GB hard drive.
- Added a Pre-Owned Xbox 8MB memory card for $20.
- Added 50pcs Ritek 4x DVD-R for $100
- Added 25pcs CD/DVD jewel cases for $5

With the announcement of Xecutor 3, I am reluctant to stock Xecutor 2.3 Pro/Lite chips - even if it will be a few months before they are available to the market. However, I will continue to obtain small shipments of Xecutor 2.3 Lite chips for those that are interested.

I deeply apologize for the all of the delays in getting X2.3Lite and DMS3v9 chips in. Stock should be arriving soon and I will be filling all orders as soon as they arrive. Unfortunately, it looks like all of my incoming stock has been reserved for people that have already 'called dibs'. All Xbox and DMS3v9 chips will be sold out until the new batch arrives. This next batch (after my current order is received) will be arriving sometime after Christmas, or possibly in the new year (due to no postal service during the holidays).

On a more positive note, PS2 Magic V, Magic V 50k, and DMS3 v2 chips are still available. The new promotion includes 5 x Ritek 4x DVD-R with any (In compliance with the new rules, all Services have been removed from the thread) Premod (yes, even the Pre-Owned systems, which are still for sale).

As always, if anybody has any modchip, Xbox, or PS2 questions (even if they are not sales-related), please PM me (http://www.redflagdeals.net/forums/index.php?act=Msg&CODE=04&MID=3321) and I will help you out as best as I can.

I sincerely thank everyone for your patience and support!

Free bump for nonanon. He's very professional and does great work on console mods. I bought a DMS3v9 PS2 premod from him reccently and I satisfied with his service.

However, I just want to warn those interested in the DMS3v9 modchip for the PS2, its not 100% reliable (check out the forum at www.DMS3.com). Some have had no problems with their chips and it works 100% for them however some people like me are having lots of problems with them (very slow loading and most games won't boot). So those that don't need the extra functionality of the DMS3 chip i think it would be better to get the Magic V 50k. Hopefully a fix is available soon to fix the problems of the DMS3v9. Otherwise its a safe bet to buy premods from nonanon.

Good News for anyone who has been waiting patiently for me to restock: Xecutor 2.3B and DMS3v9 chips are back in stock and are already selling fast!

The price of the Pre-Owned Xbox has been reduced by $10 to $290. This Xbox has been modded with an Xecutor 2.3 Lite, has a Samsung DVD-ROM and a Seagate 10GB hard drive. It also comes with 1 controller and the necessary cables.

PM me if anything interests you :)

P.S. Thanks for the kind words luckystrike. Rest assured, Team DMS is hard at work on a solution to the firmware v1.8 bug.

Dexion:
The discs I have are RITEKG04 4x DVD-R. I believe the G03's are only 2x.

ub3r_interloper:
What the modchip allows you to run is dependant on what BIOS you flash onto the chip. Due to legal reasons and forum policy, I cannot provide any copyright infringing code with anything that is sold in this thread. Consequently, the Bios that comes pre-flashed on the chip will not allow you to play backups. It does, however, allow you to easily flash your own bios to the chip. For more information on Bios's and Bios Flashing, visit www.xbox-scene.com (http://www.xbox-scene.com).

News:
Ritek 4x DVD-R discs are sold out! Tentative ETA is late-January.

PM's answered and shipments are going out everyday :D big thanks go out for everyone's support!

Bad news: X-B.I.T. chips have been delayed again. I have cancelled my order with my current suppllier because of the constant delays. I am hoping to bring in a small batch from an alternate supplier, but there is no definite ETA on a new batch.

Good news: Xenium chips are on the way!

Found a couple of Xbox Xenium modchips hidden away :P 2 available! With the new update, this chip is really making a claim to be the king of Xbox modchips!

Also, Xenium OS has been updated to v1.1:

BUGS FIXED
- Focus/Component video support: Xenium-OS will now work with component video cables (HDTV) on V1.4 & V1.5 consoles.
- Focus video resolution: Xenium-OS resolution for the focus chipset has been increased to 800x600 so all screens are identical for Conexant & Focus owners.
- Boot without controllers: There is no longer a need for a controller to be present when booting to a default bios from Xenium-OS.
- Controller compatibility: A range of third party controllers, steering wheels, lightguns and IR remotes are now compatible with the Xenium-OS. Please report any further incompatibilities on our message forums at http://www.ozxodus.com
- EEprom Tools LED warning: Console's power LED now changes to RED when saving EEprom data as a safety measure.
- Onscreen keyboard overlap with Focus chipset: Some keys were not visible when using a V1.4 or V1.5 console.
- HDD Browser bug: When exiting the browser without selecting a file, Xenium-OS will not lockup anymore.

NEW FEATURES
- Instant Boot ™: The ability to instantly boot your console using the default bios and skip the Xenium-OS splash page. Once enabled in the Xenium-OS settings menu you can power on your console using the power button and boot to the default bios, otherwise press the Eject button to start your console up in the Xenium-OS. No additional hardware install wires are required for this feature!!
- Onscreen Keyboard Upgrade: Symbols are now available for bios naming.
- Bank LED Colors: Assign a different color of the Xenium's LED to each bios bank. Default colors are Bank 1 = Green, Bank 2 = Red, Bank 3 = Blue, Bank 4 = Amber.
- Drive Info: Reports HDD model, capacity and lock status as well as DVD-Rom model.
- Lock/Unlock HDD: Lock or Unlock your HDD from Xenium-OS.
- Smart Drive Upgrade: Upgrade your HDD within Xenium-OS by replacing your DVD-Rom with a new HDD (set as Slave) for the duration of the cloning process. (Works with with source drives < 137Gb).
- Copy Partitions: Copy a HDD's partition to another HDD. Supports Partitions C,E,F,X,Y and Z.
- Format Partitions: Individually format your C,E,F,X,Y and Z partitions.
- Autodetection of X2 4981 series bioses.
- IR Support: You can navigate the Xenium-OS with your IR remote control using the following button mappings.
Menu Navigation
===============
Up,Down,Left & Right buttons = Controller's D-PAD
Select or 1 buttons = Controller's A button
2 buttons = Controller's B button
3 buttons = Controller's X button
4 buttons = Controller's Y button
Additional QuickStart buttons
=============================
Menu button = Controller's White button
Back button = Controller's B button
0 button = Controller's Black button

KNOWN BUGS
- When two devices are inserted into both memory card slots on a single controller, Xenium-OS navigation is not possible. To resolve this problem simply remove one device. Fault confirmed with 2 x memory cards as well as 1 x memory card and 1 x voice communicator.
- Controller button sensitivity may vary depending on what controller combinations are installed into what ports.
- Failure to boot Original Bios, this bug has been documented on our forums although at this point we have not been able to simulate the fault. We suggest that if you experiance this problem that you use a bios bank to enter the MS Dashboard and confirm your date and time settings are correct, thus far this is the most effective way to rectify the problem.

nonanon
Feb 21st, 2004, 11:58 PM
Every modchip has its stengths and weaknesses. While both chips allow you to run non-MS bios's, the Xenium has other features built-in (through Xenium OS). With the update to v1.1, Team OzXodus has implemented an 'Instant Boot' feature which eliminates the need to boot into the OS before lauching your favorite Bios (which is what many early adopters complained about ;) ). Check out my earlier post for a complete list of features/bugfixes in Xenium OS v1.1.

It's like comparing the PS2 modchips, MagicV to DMS3. The MagicV is your basic non-swap modchip, while the DMS3 incorporates many more features on-chip. The MagicV and Xecutor 2.3B Lite are cheaper because they only do one thing, while the DMS3 and Xenium are more expensive because they have other capabilities too.

On a side note, I am down to my last Xenium chip. However, Xecutor 2.3B Lite chips should be arriving soon
Watch the thread for updates :D

Also, although this has been known for quite some time now, Sony's DNAS has been hacked. Now you can keep your originals safe and play your legal backups online!

Disclaimer: I am not responsible for your actions. The sole purpose to playing backups online is to protect your original retail copy. I have personally tested my own original copy of Resident Evil: Outbreak, and can attest that it works. YMMV

Please note however, you must not use publically posted disc id's. There are rumors that Sony has begun banning console id's (similar to Microsoft banning modded Xbox's from Xbox Live) that are using publically available disc id's.

With the forums being up/down I thought I would sneak in a little update on my pool tournament.

We got off to a good start, winning our first match last night :D

Unfortunately the next team we were up against is the #1 team in our league :( (out of 44 teams) I only managed to win one out three in that match :( (although one could say that I only played twice since I got run out off the break against the #1 player in the league :) )

Oh well. To the B-Side we go tonight. Hopefully we'll be able to make some noise there

As for the DMS3 flash, Team DMS has updated the firmware again to v2.1. It seems some people were having problems flashing their chip (which has been improved in v2.1). I have successfully updated 3 PS2's to v2.1 and I can happily say that all of the features work as advertised :D And the "hangs at logo" bug has been fixed :D :D Everyone who has a DMS3 installed in their PS2 should definitely update to the new firmware.

Team DMS has released another update to their firmware.
04.05.2004

Flash 2.2 release

DMS Flash upgrade 2.2 has been released and is available in either BIN/CUE or ELF format in the downloads area. This new release fixes a few bugs present in the 2.0 release such as certain games freezing, and problems actually flashing your chip with the upgrade. It also adds a couple of new features such as improved PS2 video fix and support for Codebreaker. For more details see the readme file included with the upgrade archives. I have been having problems with my email :( Hopefully, it will be fixed within the next 24-48 hours. If you need to contact me, please do so through PM's. For those that have been trying to EMT some funds to me, please contact me ASAP so that we can make alternate arrangements.

I've been getting a lot of questions regarding my "lifetime" warranty. My warranty covers the labour that I put into any console for the life of that console. The actual hardware (modchips and consoles) is guaranteed for 90 days. In simpler terms, if a system that I have modded goes bad because of a poor Install, I will repair/replace the installation at my expense. Good, soldered-on connections should never come loose and hence I am confident in guaranteeing my work for the life of your console.

Bump for modchip pics in the main post :D Click thumbs for larger image.

Yes, I know the pics aren't the greatest. Better pics will be up soon :D

Due to popular demand, I have a small quantity of Xecutor 2.3B Lite chips. PM me with your postal code if you want one. They are $50 plus shipping :D

I am also contemplating bringing in some LA6508RII chips. These would be useful to those that have suffered from the "v9 syndrome". PM me if you would be interested.

I apologize for all of the PM's I won't get to tonight... it's getting late here :) I promise, I'll get to you tomorrow :D

Good night everyone!

Cleaned out my Inbox and replied to most PM's. Please contact me if you have not yet heard from me :D

divx: The Xecutor 3 will be compatible with all versions of Xbox (including the v1.6). As I have not yet gotten my hands on one, I cannot comment on the Installation methods. From what I understand, all current methods will be available (wire, pin-header, quick-solder). As for price, they will be positioned to compete with current gen-4 chips, so look for pricing to be similar to the Xenium and SmartXX.

Here's an Xecutor 3 featurelist straight from Team Xecutor's forums:
2MB Flash Rom With 15 Bios Storage Options
Dedicated 256K Backup Rom with a new Linux based bios (Can be upgraded to any bios you wish)
i2c Bus for X3 Config LIVE!
New Enhanced SPI / i2c Interface
New Enhanced 16xI/O Bus for Full LCD support (and other future hardware addons)
All LCD modules to be custom made with adapters so no soldering required (also currently testing with a new 320x200 Matrix LCD)
Flash Protection Control
Mod Disable - Quick Press of Power or Eject (External LED will indicate RED LED)
Quick Press Power+Eject >1 second to boot from 256k Backup Rom (External LED will indicate YELLOW LED)
Quick Press >1 second to boot from 2Mb Flash Rom (External LED will indicate GREEN LED)
HDD Activity LED
LAN Activity LED
LPC/D0 Alignment LED
D0 Control
Wire Install Option + Included Wire adapter
Pin Header Install Option
New No-Solder Pogo Pin Install Option Available

Xecuter 2.3B Lite's all sold! Thank you for everyone's interest! Due to incompatibilities with v1.6 Xbox's (it cannot be properly disabled without additional hardware) I will no longer be bringing in X2.3B Lite's (at least until a more elegant solution is provided). I am contemplating the DuoX 2 modchip which has the same functionality of the X2.3B Lite, but does not employ an external switch module. Best of all, it will be cheaper than the X2.3B Lite ;)

All PSTwo Premods will have the "Matrix Fix (http://www.infinitymod.com/cgi-bin/matrix/site.pl?page=laserv12)" applied to save the focusing/tracking chip from blowing. Similar to the v9/v10 syndrome, both modded and non-modded PSTwo's are failing. The "Matrix Fix (http://www.infinitymod.com/cgi-bin/matrix/site.pl?page=laserv12)" has been shown to prevent the situation that causes the failures, which ironically means a modded PSTwo is now more reliable than a non-modded PSTwo

Bump for a damn fine mod installer!

Nonanon installed Crystal Chips in each of my two PS2s (and sold me a used memory card to boot), and both came back promptly and are working beautifully. He was very responsive to all PMed questions and inquiries, and provided high quality chip installations (complete with neat Crystal Chip decals for the front of the PS2s :D) and full testing. Highly recommended for anyone in need of having their PS2 modded.

And anyone outside of Winnipeg that might be worried about shipping, my experience sending my PS2s from Toronto to Winnipeg was completely painless.

Sorry for the hiatus! I've been busy with work lately :( But I hope things are settling down now. Xecuter 3 modchips are up for sale. See top post for details.

eh^, MrBobby, AcuraEL, legion, and _pOtEnZa_: Thanks for the kind words!

Alexo: There are two types of PS2 modchips, Basic and Flashable. The Duo2SE is a basic modchip that allows for playing all of your backups and can be disabled for online play. The Flashable modchips (i.e. Crystal Chip and Matrix Infinity) go a step further by including and upgradeable firmware on-chip. This feature promises potential upgrades to the modchip without the need to upgrade the hardware. Another thing to note is that, currently, only Flashable modchips have support for the new slim PSTwo's.

To those looking for DMS4 modchips: Due to past events (HDLoader fiasco, spotty end-user support, etc.) I will not be offering these chips. If you have purchased a DMS3/DMS3+ Premod from me in the past, I will continue to provide hardware support should you require it.

I understand that the 3 chips that work with the slim PSTwo's are the Crystal, the DMS4 and Matrix Infinity. Can you tell me the differences between them?

Also, can you please explain whether a chipless solution (like the "Swap Magic" CD) can be used on the PSTwo to play backups and games from a different region?

(Does the PSTwo support a HD anyway?)

jimbojones: Thanks for the bump!

Alexo:
No, the PSTwo does not support the addition of a hard drive.

As for a "Chipless" solution for PSTwo, the new SwapMagic 3.3 has support for v12 consoles. From what I understand, you still need to open your console to use this disc, thus voiding your warranty and negating the main reason to getting the disc ;)

With regards to DMS Technologies:
- The developers behind the HDLoader were none other than DMS Technologies. Instead of integrating HDLoader into their firmware, they eschewed their loyal modchip consumers and put the software up for sale. This put off many DMS supporters (myself included) and led many to question their commitment to their customers. Homebrew code is now freely available for those that wish to use a hard drive with their PS2 (modchip required).
- Shortly after the release of the DMS3+ modchip, the DMS4 Lite/Pro was announced. The DMS3+ was promptly discontinued, leaving many loyal customers wondering about support for their products.

As for differences between the Crystal Chip, Matrix Infinity, DMS4 Lite, and DMS4 Pro:
Practically, there are none. All of these chips have an upgradeable firmware which promises new features/upgrades in the future. The exception is the DMS4 Pro, which also has flash memory for storing/running homebrew apps. Price-wise, the Crystal Chip and Matrix Infinity are very similar ($60 each), and the DMS4 Lite/Pro are more expensive (typically $70-$80 each, respectively).

Now, for which chip is "better", that is open to debate. Personally, I have had great experiences with each of these chips. IMHO, I would choose the chip that fits your budget and go with that ;)

Looks like local Superstore's still have v7/v9 Network Bundles still in stock. This means I can have (regular) PS2 Premods for sale again :) Check top post for prices. Edit 12-19-04: Regular PS2's now sold out at Superstore!

_pOtEnZa_: I would wait before jumping on the band wagon. For now, there is no BIOS that will do what I think you want it to do ;)

Alexo: There isn't a super-site for PS2 like there is for Xbox (www.xbox-scene.com), however, one of the more popular sites, www.ps2-scene.org has a pretty good forum.

Bought a pre-mod PS2 (which is working great) and couldn't be happier. My (many) pm's were always answered with a fast/friendly response and shipping was very fast. Plus the prices can't be beat. :)

I don't think it gets any better than nonanon when it comes to modchip installation. A true pleasure to do business with.

PSTwo Premods and Xenium ICE Premods up for sale! See main post for pricing. Also added a Duo2SE PS2 Premod for $290 shipped :) PM me if you are interested.

Many people have been asking about the "v12 syndrome" and if there is a fix available. Here is some info on some of the available fixes:

Diodes Fix - Helps protect the your laser's tracking/focusing coils from burning by directing excess voltage to ground.

Current Limiter Fix (van drunen) - not viable since limiting current means things will not turn on and will cause the power supply to overheat

PIC Fix (Matrix watchdog code) - Great for preventing mechcon lockups which lead to dead lasers. However, the way the fix works is it detects a bus hang then shuts off the PSTwo. Not viable - Who wants their PSTwo to suddenly shut off in the middle of a game?

foundmy fix - Prevents mechcon lockups, thus saving laser. I believe the fix is similar to the PIC fix, however it resets the bus on the fly, eliminating the need to shut down the PSTwo. So far, has been tested with no issue. I am including this fix with all Premods from now on.

Eit 14-12-04, 11:35pm cst: I've just received word on the availability of the Viper GC Gamecube modchip. With the rumors of a Cobra BIOS bubbling, this makes for exciting news! These modchips will be expensive! However, I am toying with picking up a few units. PM me if you are interested in a Viper GC modchip or a GAMECUBE PREMOD :!:

Hi - a couple of very newbie questions I'm sure.

I'd only want an X-box for the media stuff (divx, rm, multi-region dvd etc) and to play back up games on cd/dvd (so a HD wouldn't be necessary aslong as I could save games placements on internal mermory or on a memory card) - are there anything else that these mods will do or am I pretty much asking for it all? There seem to be different mod chips as well - is that what this is for - like some mod chips do some things and the more expensive ones do everything?

Also I'd most likely grab an X-box from a pawn shop and have it modded - would I mail it out to you or can I just pop the hood up and swap the chip like a stick of ram?

If I did buy one off at a pawn shop are there certain model numbers I should look for (I seem to remember some horror stories about a Thomson drive) or are some model numbers just not moddable?

Thanks for any info :)

NG:
If you plan on sticking to DVD+/-R then you probably will not need a larger hard drive. However, with games that are backed up the hard drive, the load times are noticeably quicker.

As for differences between the modchips, both the DuoX2 and Xenium ICE are flashable and can be disabled. The Xenium ICE takes it a step further by including an Operating System on-chip, which handles common tasks such as BIOS management, hard drive lockinc/unlocking, PC <-> Xbox file transfer, Recovery mode, and more.

With regards to buying a used Xbox from a pawn shop, I would be very careful when doing so. All Xbox versions are moddable, but at the very least, I would make sure you get a Samsung DVD-Rom (for help identifying, click here (http://llamma.com/xbox/Repairs/xbox_dvd_version_comparison.htm)). Thompson drives have been known to develop problems.

You can definitely send me a console for modding :D, but in most cases it is cheaper to purchase a Premod (since we wouldn't have to deal with shipping 2 ways).

Bleh, wait it out guys, the Viper mods will go down in price, and better ones will be out soon. Swapping is a pain, and not to mention, not all games work with it! Just give it a month or so for clones and better chips to come out, $110 is insane. NOTE I am not bashing the seller, I am commenting on the chips, the pricing is beyond his control.

nonanon

Sorry everyone for the lack up updates to the thread! PM's/Emails should all have been answered. Please contact me again if you have not heard from me yet.

For those with a Viper GC, if you haven't already, update your BIOS to the latest Cobra v0.3 (www.wannamod.com/DLs/Cobra03.zip).

Alexo: Yes, the Gamecube disc is a proprietary format. However, once modded, the Gamecube is then capable of reading regular DVD-R (BUT, just like the other consoles, the Gamecube is picky about the quality/type of media used). Admittedly, you will either have to make modifications to your case or leave it off entirely to use full-sized discs, but this is where Mini DVD-R comes in handy, which I can say first-hand works wonderfully :D

Avenger: No offense taken :)

It is true that the chip is quite expensive, however that is the price to pay for: (1) the only available product of its kind (2) first-generation technology. And you're right, the pricing is beyond my control :(

Compare it to the consoles. When the first PS2/Xbox/Gamecube units came out, they were much more expensive than they are today. However, the people that made the purchase at release-day have now had several more years to enjoy them ;) Some people can't/won't wait because the extra money spent would be fully justified by the extra months/years of playtime :cheesygri.

As for swapping, yes it might be a hassle to some, but for others, the benefit of playing their backups far outweighs the 5-10 seconds it takes to swap a disc. It's a matter of preference: endure the swapping and play your backups now or wait patiently and hope for a better solution to come sooner rather than later.

With regards to compatibility, this is being worked on for future BIOS updates. After several weeks of use, I can honestly say that using the Viper GC is a huge step above using a Broadband Adapter with Phantasy Star Online.

scottmcl: All consoles used in Premods are purchased from normal retail outlets just like everyone else, so I'm not too sure if it would be worth it to purchase a non-modded console from me ;)

mogwai: Another place you can find info is the forums at Maxconsole (http://forums.maxconsole.com/forumdisplay.php?forumid=17). The Viper GC is a flashable chip which, with the right BIOS, allows you to boot backups of your original games. The chip also comes with a programmer so that you can connect the chip to your PC to update the BIOS (although recent Cobra BIOS's now allow for BIOS update via DVD-R).

Thanks to the Anaconda dol, we now have an alternative BIOS for the ViperGC :cheesygri

I have personally tested GCOS v1.2 Lite with a few DOL-101 units, and am happy to say that backups can now boot as they should (unlike units with the Cobra v.04 BIOS).

GCOS v1.3 has also recently been released, which eliminates the "Lite" version. This means ViperGC users can now make use of the "Full" features of the dol/elf versions. I will be testing it shortly, and will report my findings.

If you don't already have a Broadband Adapter and Phantasy Star Online, now would be as good a time as any to jump on the ViperGC bandwagon :cheesygri

In other news, I have added a few items for sale:
- New ViperGC Gamecube Premod
- Preowned ViperGC Gamecube Premod (Purple)
- Preowned ViperGC Gamecube Premod (Platinum)
- Preowned Crystal Chip PS2 Premod (v7, non-slim)
- Preowned Duo2SE PS2 Premod (v5, non-slim)

do we still have to boot with a disc and replace it? i'm new to the whole modding thing so asking stupid questions...but, yeah. i read a while ago that there was an updated viper chip in process. has it been updated, or no?

what's digital out? is it useful? why don't the new GC's have them?

thanks

All Gamecube Premods now include 5pcs of Arco Circle Mini-DVD-R!!

Clueless Fox: I have always believed that there are no such thing as stupid questions - only stupid answers :cheesygri The ViperGC is a swap chip which receives updates through BIOS updates (so the hardware is the same, but the BIOS has been updated). As for digital out, Nintendo decided to cut costs by leaving out the digital out connector in newer units. This had previously been an issue with the Viper GC since it would only work on older consoles (i.e. with the digital out). However, with the release of the GCOS v1.4 BIOS, newer Gamecubes are now able to play backups.

I know this being my only post to date diminishes what I'm about to say, but I must HIGHLY recommend nonanon to anybody looking for a premod or install. I had nonanon install a Crystal Chip in my v7 PS2, and was impressed with his service. I had my console back the next day, and EVERYTHING works perfectly (well, everything I've tried so far). I'm back from pool :) For those curious, we won our first match. I didn't know this until after the fact, but they were actually first place in their division (we were second-last in ours :D). We were horribly over-matched in the second round, so off we went to the B-side of our bracket. We ended up playing the same team from the first night, and we beat them again :D :D which earned us a spot in the Round of 16 bracket. Unfortunately, we didn't have much success there and lost the next two matches, and were eliminated :(

PS2 Crystal Chip Software Release v15 has been released. PM me if you need it.

After a long delay, we're finally releasing Software Release 15. We've been extremely busy working on and testing our new revisions of the Crystal Chips hardware and making every effort to maintain backward compatability so that we can continue to support our CC1.0 users. Details on our new revisions will be available in the coming weeks.

We've added some preliminary protections to the BootManager software to discourage users of other chips from using our software. If you are not a Crystal Chips customer, DO NOT USE THIS SOFTWARE. Attempting to modify the BootManager executable could cause permanent damage to your PS2 and/or accessories so please don't try to "crack" the software.

Here are some features of the new BM v1.6:
- DVD+R Double Layer support
- Media Type Detection scripts allow you to associate homebrew applications with specific discs based on the disc contents.
- Completely rewritten PBAT script interpreter.
- Highly improved disc authentication system.
- Miscellaneous changes to how the disc and homebrew launching works.

Please see the readme.txt in the upgrade package for more information.

And finally, we'll be rolling out our new multi-language site soon for our non-english speaking customers.

Now that our new hardware revisions are nearly through final testing we expect our firmware releases to become more frequent once again. As always, thank you to all of our users.
