Not really just software, but most studios use a software/hardware combo of Protools. Not really sure what you need it for but it might be out of your price range as it is for most people.

There are different versions of protools available. the new one protools mpowered uses certain maudio interfaces. protools le runs on either an mbox(used around 250), mbox2(just over 500), mbox2pro(just over 800), 001(dont even buy one), or 002( around 1300). there is also a protools hd which is around 10,000 to setup. if your on pc you can look at getting cubase/nuendo, or if your on mac you can look at either digital performer or logic. all of those programs are similar just a different workflow but overall mainly do the same things.

personally i use protools le with an mbox but if you dont want to spend money and just need something to mess around in you can check out audacity, its a free program. never personally used it but heard good things for it being free.
