I'd get one of those Samsung laser monochrome printers.

I have two Samsung ML-2010 printers here in the household. The best $70 I ever spent on a printer if you ask me...

Best? By what criteria?

My personal criteria are:
- Colour and photo printing capability
- Cheapest possible ink cartridges
- No clogging (the bane of ink-jets - we have a pile of retired ink-jets that clogged finally and permanently)
- Good photo quality
- Speed, especially on photos

By these criteria I agree that the Canon Pixma ip4200 mentioned above is a good choice. It's faster than the HP/Epson/Lexmark competition, has cheaper ink cartridges, and never, never clogs. Photo quality is decent for a sub-$100 printer. Some other models are better on text, but it's adequate.

If you want to print a lot of text, you might be better off with a laser printer. But keep in mind that you pay a lot for a low-cost laser printer in the form of small and expensive toner cartridges.
