The model on the board if I remember correctly is a Sony Vaio VJ270b

It has a Pentium M 750
Integrated webcam
Don't remember much else

There are also some FS830s kicking around. I got an open box lastnight, but I really hate the keyboard and the overall fit and finish. It is going back for sure.

It's pretty crazy that I like the Acer 3613 better than a Sony Vaio, but I think the build quality is better on the Acer.

The reason is that there's too much old inventory that was previously on display, and as such is "used"/open box, and nobody wants it at the price they were previously. These price points are meant to get this old (in many cases, 6+ months) product out of the stores.

That Toshiba M70-SR6 laptop had been around forever. Those of you buying these old laptops and desktops without the ESP are crazy, especially HP desktops :D

tonight got the last piece FJ270B in vancouver area- metro town staples. 697.00 + 129.99 2yrs warranty. (totally 3 yrs coverage) + tax.

I watched the computer . prince george got 1 more. then whole vancouver does not have any more left till tonight for both FJ270B & FS640 .

too bad my deal is without battery. but i have sony fs620 in which battery life is infamous short life . only 1.5 hrs. i am going to buy a new battery for this old sony at fleebay - about 100 bucks.

but i think this is still worth because of the excellent picture colour.

2 years ESP = First year manufacture warranty + Second year Staples warranty.

The item # on my cisnet reciept is 40000642747, for which the SKU is 642474. Given that the # on his reciept is 027242675711 I'll bet the SKU is 675711

No the sku isn't probably 675711, the only case a sku is the last 6 digit of an item number is when it's start with 400000, wich means that's this product is made for staples and/or is staples brand....

Cisnet is one of those....
Maybe tomorrow morning on the job I'll check on computer to find the ''real'' sku of this one.

I was at staples today and picked up a new fj207 for $697.00. They also had a fs830 for $597.00 and a S660B for $997.00
The clearance tags on the board were all out of date and reflected the higher price.
The S660B was taged at $1497.00, but was 979.00 at the till.
There were a few other sony notebooks on clearance, but when I asked the manager to check the price they magically disappeared from stock.:|

That is good thinking. I got a deep discount clearance Toshiba last year. No telling how long it had been hanging around or how it had been (mis)handled, but the power connector went after a year so it needed the motherboard replaced. All it cost me was a few phone calls. Why they make these things so that a busted connector requires a new MB is beyond me, but I sure was glad that I got the ESP.

Also is it worth it for the extended warranty guys? (my Fj270 was BNIB.. but the battery is what im more concerned about..) any comments on if I should go back to staples and add the warranty on it??

just turn down the screen brightness to half way and you'll get a longer bat. life.

having at full is usually the most common reason for poor battery life on a brand new laptop.

Didn't want to dig up an old thread, but I purchased the FJ270B and the battery only last about 1.5hrs after full charge. Is this normal? or should I bring it back to Stooples?

i'm getting almost 3hrs on mine full recharged and setting the brightness to the lowest

Cool thanks, I'll try setting the brightness to low and see. If not, I hope the warranty will get me a new battery.

Just phoned in (is it just me or do staples employees never pick up phones?), the Sales rep told me that "it has been discontinued for quite awhile" and no stor e in GTA has it

Hey that's not nice! I happen to work at the one in Richmond Hill and I try to answer the phone as soon as possible but it's hard.

At most times we have 2 employees working. By the time I walk to our lock-up and back I get approached by at least 3 customers (2/3 times they ask for what ink cartridge their printer uses, and for that I have to go on the PC!).

Oh something I recommend you guys do, go to any staples store and ask if they have any laptop that is not listed on the web or on the clearance board because what happens a lot of times is that sometimes we take laptops off the displays and website but we still have one or two left that go for super cheap!

Me and my co-worker found 2 laptops with AMD64 3500+, 1GB ram, 80GB HD for $399.99!

Ok guys there has been a miss understanding.

I didn't buy a laptop for that price (nor do I have the SKU or UPC). Me and my co-worker discovered this laptop back in summer when we were cleaning out our lock-up with all our laptops. I doubt this laptop is still available BUT if you read what I said before

Go to ANY Staples location in your local area and ask the sales associate for any laptop not visible to the public (i.e not on the web anymore, not on a clearance board).

I myself have seen a few laptops nobody even knew about in our back that were very very very cheap.

According to consumer reports, Sony for laptops are among the most reliable only being matched by lenuvo. They beat apple in this respect for all you apple lovers. Shame about those battery those.

I was talking to one of the salesman tonight and he told me the same thing.
I was picking up the extended warranty on one of the laptops I purchased and we struck up a conversation about clearance items.
He told me that they sometimes have open box items in the back that are not listed anywhere in the store, printers, laptops, desktops...ect.
He also stated that if the item is on clearance for a low price that they will hide them and wait till the price drops, sometimes as low as $1, and then purchase them for themselves.
He was nice enough to give me the heads up on some items that will be cleared soon at my local Stooples.

It is, I found a laptop for $150 once but I couldn't get it at that time because I didn't have my wallet  I was so angry.

It was a decent one too, 1.6M, 256MB ram, 40GB, 15.4LCD, Acer brand. Can't complain!

But yeah Saca_saca did the smart thing and listened to me :D

While this deal is surely long dead, I thought it might be kind to follow-up.

It took me a couple of hours of phoning different stores before I found a helpful fella who knew how to look up a SKU for a discontinued item no longer on the website. The whole process took about 2 or 3 hours on the phone, but the effort was well worth it.

Once I had the SKU it was dead simple. They were able to look up stock province-wide. I simply called to hold it, paid at my local store, and they transferred it for free within a couple of days. Had there been a problem I simply could have returned it. Thrilled with the deal and very grateful to the OP. Similar to previous posters, the price in the system in my region was still $597, so if it weren't for RFD the deal never would have happened. So thanks!!

Oh and one last thing -- I tried Vista on the VGN-FS640 -- not nearly as quick as XP, battery life is even shorter, no aero glass on the 915 video, and the current ALPS touchpad driver needs permission to start on every boot. I was back to XP within a day or two.

As a Staples employee, I will just shake my head at all the stores you called. That's really sad. It should take all of 45 seconds at a computer to do that.

Shaking your head at me or the employees? :o

Admittedly obnoxious, I felt bad for taking up so much employee time. I was repeatedly told that since the item was sold out online it had automatically been purged from the system, and there was no way to retrieve the SKU to do a stock search. I was instructed to call individual stores.

Finally a smart fella in the Sarnia shop looked the SKU up in some sort of hardcopy format and we were off to the races.

While it'd have been nice for the OP to include the SKU, I'm simply grateful they posted the deal.

From my experience, it's best to actually go to a store and deal with associates who look like computer geeks, because they are usually the people who know the staples computer system inside and out. I've recently been to 4 different staples repeatedly (In Calgary, there is only 2 staples with phone systems that actually work, the others will leave you waiting for 15 minutes or so, and complain about how the system is having trouble 'paging your party' and returns you to the main menu), and have dealt with many associates. Out of all of them, there was only one person who knew how to search what I was looking for, and gave me a SKU number for the product.

You guys are lucky to have such good staples stores around you. I vist my local staples form time to time and I've never seen a notebook cheaper than $700 on a clearance price.

Do they always display these awesome deals on display or do they hide it?

Apparently if you live in Saskatchewan you might be able to locate one... NONE in Ontario. Confirmed.

GTA actually showed (1) compared to the previous posting. It was located at the University and Dundas store, however, the unit was broken with the repair tag NOT sticking out (or so I'm told).

Either somebody at the store got lucky... or it was in fact dead. Consider this Compaq V2410CA deal D-E-A-D.

I went to my local staples (Stockyards) and asked about this laptop which they did not have BUT they did have one Xplip 1055E (AMD X2 3800+ dual core, 1GB RAM, 250GB HD, DVD Burner, DVD Reader, some kind of tuner card, etc) for 297.00$ on the Clearance board. When he brought it out he said it was a return from repair and clearly looked used and he said it did not come a box etc. I asked about KB/mouse/speakers etc. He leaves and comes back with a logitech mouse, kinyo speakers and xplio keyboard lol (all used of course) Anyway very happy with this deal. THANKS!

Hey Dark Colonel:

I don't think anybody's upset with you for this... we appreciate these kinds of notices since it could have lead to somebody scoring a laptop for a great price (which has happened in the past).

The limited reviews I perused for this laptop while on hold were pretty good except for its battery life (even at 50% brightness it would drain the battery in less than 2 hours which isn't very good).

Thanks again for keeping us posted!
