Note that once earned, the cards can only be used for purchases>50$ (after discounts and before taxes) and 97% of the cards will be 5$

True, you have to plan your buying strategies carefully to get the best value.
I find that the best approach is to buy hard-to-find items online (Indigo has some items that Amazon.ca doesn't carry), then use in-store promotions towards bestselling books which have a pretty big % off discount.

It's lame how you can't find out the value until you go to pay
If I was lucky and got a card worth say $25, I'd obviously use it. But since there is such a low chance of getting anything other then $5 I probably won't even use the card I'll get from making the order I am going to tonight

Wouldn't it be good to use the card when you make a future purchase??
