I always thought it was illegal for regular joes to buy/wear bullet-resistant vests... but someone told me otherwise recently.
I do know that you can't just walk into R Nicholl's and buy one, you need justification, such as work-related reasons (security, Brinks, etc).
Go into one of those shops and ask.

Bullet proof vests are legal in Canada...of course if you are noticed to be wearing one by a Police Officer, expect a series of questions
I did hear though that if you decide to own a Level 4 or 4a that you must register it...not sure if there is any validity to that or not though.
There have been requests by some LEO individuals to make a push to have wearing a BP vest while commiting a crime illegal...not sure how that would pan out.

In Canada, it's pretty much illegal to protect yourself.

No it isn't, you just need to make sure you do it in a way that is sensible. This isn't the wild west like the U.S., and I'm thankful for that.

The US isn't like the Wild West by any stretch of the imagination...If you defended youself with a firearm down there, you still have to prove that you used it in accordance with the law.

Yes, but that law (depending on state, of course) is often far more lax in terms of burden of proof. To me, many jurisdictions don't have rigourous enough checks and balances in place to ensure people don't over react to situations.
