Edit: Link on the story (http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNews/story/CTVNews/20060902/student_survey_060902?s_name=&no_ads=)

In the voluntary survey, students will be asked more than 55 questions.
Those in grades 9 through 12 will be asked whether they are straight or gay, lesbian, transgendered, bisexual, queer or two-spirited (an aboriginal term used to describe people who display both male and female characteristics).

Funny thing is, my sister did it today and the teacher made NO MENTION of it being some sort of "Voluntary Survey" ... it was passed out, they were told to do it.

It was mentioned on Global News how the school board was passing out these surveys for the students to complete and their information will be protected. What information were they asked?
Sexual orientation - Straight, Gay, Bi-Sexual, Transgendered.
Your background, your parents background and their levels of education, make-up of your household.

Wouldn't ANY type of survey like this usually come home with a permission form or notification FIRST? Here it's on the news and we're talking to my sister about it (Grade 10) and she said all the students were given the form to fill out this morning.

Giving the form to vulnerable kids when the parents would have easily said no to the form (which we too would have). Why would the school need to know your sexual orientation and your background, so they can stereotype and teach differently? Seems like they want to know about everyone's business all of a sudden.

Anyone talk to their children today and find out they were putting down their family history in some unknown TDSB Survey???

Beleave it or not there are some parents that do not know if there child is gay or straight. The reason they do this is so they know in case something does come up.

The guy who talks about issues on Global brought up some valid points.
This information is "Private", but private from who? If it has to be kept private, why would the TDSB need it in the first place?
Also, what's the say the kid next to the one who's putting down "Gay" isn't seeing it and then you've got all kinds of issues for THAT child.
And these are KIDS we're talking about ... why would the TDSB need a student to disclose whether they're this or that at this age when really, that conversation should be private and explored in their own lives. Not put down on a piece of paper so the schoolboard can study it for a Grade 10 student.

So they find out a number of students are gay. So what, are they going to TEACH differently?
I don't think it's right.

The ocsb did these for a few years and it did help big time. They did it only for the high school level. Why the ocsb did was there were students that were exploring them selfs durring school hours. So what the ocsb did was handed out a survey and then offered special clincs etc.

I dont know what your sister is doing or what school she attends, but I know our school was given permission forms to take home. (The parents had to sign it if they didn't want kids doing it)

As for the servey.. They want me to write it tomorrow during my chem class since I have a 1st period spare and didnt do it today. Odd's of me skipping chemistry for some ******** servey? Slim to none.

Well in some ways, that's sort of why this thread was created. To see what else was going on, but to see what folks though of the situation.
Like I said, in 99/100 circumstances, they always ask about it.
This one they just brought upon themselves and gave it out for them to do it with my sister's particular teacher not even mentioning it was voluntary (as if it was some assignment or something of the sorts).

I think the whole situation is ridiculous if you ask me.
