View Full Version : Smokers...why do some of you litter?
PLUSorMINUS
Nov 6th, 2006, 07:57 PM
It ticks me off when I find a pile of cigarette butts littered in a parking lot or on the street curb. While I was getting out of my car today, I saw some guy (dressed in a suit no doubt) empty out his ash try on to the edge of the sidewalk/curb! He must have had the equivalent of 40 butts in there! Then he just started his car and drove away. I wanted to say something before he drove off, but then again I didn't want to start 'litter-rage' and get my butt kicked.
Why can't wait till you get home and empty your car's ash trays into a garbage can???? Why do some of you litter and think it's ok to dump your butts anywhere you feel like??? Stop littering and keep the city clean!
Sheesh!

I don't know why, but smokers just seem to think that cig butts aren't litter. They are contstantly tossing them on the ground - even ones who wouldn't throw a bag of mcdonalds garbage out the window will throw 20 butts a day on the ground.
And don't gimme that crap about catching garbage on fire if they throw it in a bin. It's November, and every garbage can in Vancouver is soaked through, it's not gonna start a fire. You just put it on the ground, snuff out the flame, pick it up, and put it in a garbage can. Easy.

I see people tossing cigarette butts from their car almost everyday.
If fact I saw one this morning on the way to work.
I am so tempted to give out his car's license plate number coz it's so unique.
Actually, if you are reading this owner of the 2 double letters and ends with 288 license plate, GET YOUR CIGARETTE BUTTS OFF THE STREET!!!

Smokers are weak to the addiction of cigarettes and I think they litter because it gives them control like they own the street. Honestly, if smokers still smoke because its cool, grow up. Otherwise, whats their reasoning for smoking?

I disagree. I know lots of people who give everyone **** for littering and dont litter themselves, but then will turn around and drop a butt on the ground without a second glance. I agree it's not because they need to feel like they control something, but saying smoking has nothing to do with it is wrong.

Nope you are wrong.
Cigarette smokers in general just don't care about how their habit affects other people.
They don't care if they force someone else to breathe their toxic smoke and they don't care if someone else has to clean up their mess.
Of course there are exceptions but in general I have found this to be the case.

Close, it's more like saying that murderers don't really care about theft. The harm they do to themselves and others is greater then the damage done by their littering, so it's not surprising that they litter more then others.

My point remains the same, if you commit one type of crime doesn't mean you're prone to commit another totally different and unrelated type of crime. Even law enforcement recognizes that principle. And for those of you who know me, you know I rarely give credit to the way police conduct themselves.

are there such bylaws that prohibit specifically the improper discarding of waste products created from the use of tobacco?
the main reason why smokers litter is because they are lazy, plus the fact they dont give a crap about their health so why would they give a damn about mother nature?

how is that ridiculous?
it's the truth, smokers are too lazy to carry their butts (pun intended) to a garbage can, even when one is available nearby.
and smokers dont care about their own health or the environment. even if they dont litter the ground with ash, they pollute the air with smoke. they have a mentality that says "one more cigarette wont kill me, one more cigarette on the ground wont screw up nature."

Again way off base...smoking a cigarette and throwing the butt on the ground are very closely related as most smokers do this almost always when smoking outside and there is not some sort of receptacle RIGHT there and even then it's a stretch, where as being a petty thief and a murderer are not even in the same ball park.

I'll fill in where your selective reading leaves holes. I have not said that 'smoking is bad for the health of all' is not a fact. Or course it is, as well as for the environment I might add.
I only smoke in public at outdoor cafes and bars and use ashtrays. So no I do not drop ashes on the ground. Nor do I throw butts on the ground because I don't smoke while I'm walking, like I said only in a legal-to-smoke locations where ashtrays are required to be present.
So, as to your questions, I already stated (the selective part I guess you missed) I don't throw my butts on the ground, nor do I litter in any other manner.

All he's saying is that:
Non-smokers may litter X.
Smokers may litter X, but may also litter their cigarette butts (denote them as Y). Therefore, Smokers litter X+Y.
X+Y > X
Therefore, smokers tend to litter more than non-smokers.

OK...now google how many cig butts there are compared to other litter and you'll be able to factually back up what you said...the facts I was challenging you for.
Yes, my smoking does explain a lot. It explains how some smokers behave responsibly with their butts and that smokers, in proportion to anyone else, don't litter anymore than the average person...oooh lets say for example, like drivers who pollute the air and/or/etc industry that pollutes the air, kills the trees, pollutes our rivers which then kills the fish etc etc etc.
Btw, perplexed one, thanks but I don't feel picked on at all, ty..;) I make no apologies for my ONE unhealthy habit and I, like many other smokers I know do my best to keep my unhealthy habit from affecting those non-smokers who, yes, I do believe have a right not to breath my second hand smoke.

im willing to bet most smokers have similar habits to non-smokers, ie driving a car, producing garbage.
now all things being equal which they are more or less, generally smokers litter more because of their habit. of course this doesnt apply to everyone, but it is a general trend.
it's true non-smokers pollute/litter, but smokers do it a bit more.

I'd concede that smokers pollute more, but not that they litter more. On the weekends, cuz I live right downtown, my building has a lot of parties. The litter left in the elevators is generally coffee cups, junk food bags, McD's wrappers, Pizza Pizza wrappers etc. I never see cigarette butts or ashes or even empty cigarette packs.
I guess to be accurate we'd have to say that smokers who are also litterers AND throw butts on the ground litter more than another person who litters but doesn't smoke. But without stats, that's about the most honest conclusion with the facts we have (or don't have).
Would you agree with that?

Which is safer, throwing the cigarette on the ground or in a garbage can? There are not a lot of places to dispose cigarettes especially right after you've had one. I know in the long run, its bad for the environment because it ends up washed into the sewers and into the lake. The only way to solve this problem is, ban smoking completely anywhere. And we all know thats never going to happen. The world is not going to get better, we're all doomed.
