I'm still more of a fan of Media Player Classic, but I do use VLC for MKV files....for some reason, MPC can't FFD or REW through them on my machine.

I also vote VLC. Plain simple, No CoDecs needed

CCCP HANDS down.

It contains every codec you will need and comes bundled with MPC (which I like better than VLC).

The codecs contained in the package also have the benefit of being tested as a package, so that there aren't codecs tripping over each other, trying to play your movies. MPC is also very light and is not a system hog.

Oh, and also has no malware.

Get it here (http://www.cccp-project.net/)

VLC is good as well, I just like the CCCP package better.

Generally, all you need is XviD for video, as it's almost universally compatible (eg. the MP3 format for video) -> http://www.xvidmovies.com/codec/

Don't know about FFDShow, but for AC3, I use http://ac3filter.net/

BTW, pros don't get codec packs. They just download what they need ;). Who wants bloat?

CCCP was made by pros

read their wiki and you'll come to understand why it's the only pack you'll ever need

i used to do it "your" way.. downloading codecs that i only needed... until CCCP came along that had the same stuff i was downloading separately ;)

Wow, so much info. Now I am even more confused! How can there be so many options for preforming the same task? :(

You can choose which ever you like, they are not identical both has a pro and con. Some people prefer one over the other so you can either try both and choose or just use one, either one will do.

torrents? what are those? , i don't use them

my vote for mpc as i want to use my own codecs for decoding... also, codec packs are for n00bs... ffdshow all the way!

another vote for CCCP + MPC, MPC bundled with CCCP already so don't go hunt for both

Codec packs have been known to cause problems because of conflicts. There are many competing codecs that can decode the same material and sometimes when windows attempts to combine 2 codecs they don't mesh and you end up missing sound or subtitles. A codec pack can be problematic if you need to update part of the install like Quicktime.

I only use VLC player (which uses it's own codecs), ffdshow and quicktime alternative. FFDshow is the swiss army knife of codecs and decodes pretty much everything. However it does mess up some stuff and when it does I use VLC player which has never rejected anything

Oh yeah and by avoiding the codec packs you can be assured that you won't get a virus/spyware/malware or any other programs that slow down your computer

The CCCP + MPC combo works best. I've been using it for a year now and there hasn't really been anything it couldn't play.

Just download VLC. It sounds like it's the best option for you. You don't have to worry about anything else.
