So I wanted to add more RAM to my sister's Gateway computer, it came with only 256Mb originally, so I bought a 512Mb DIMM at Bestbuy and I couldn't seat it in the motherboard slot :( The original 256 stick is DDR PC2100, and I bought a 512 DDR 400mhz stick, thinking it would the faster memory would run slower and be compatible. And yes, I know about the pin orientation issue.
Isn't DDR = DDR? I'm missing something...what is it? :)
thanks

Remember the orientations. And the slots are probably still virgins, they might take a little more of a push before you can get them in.

I tried both dimms in both slots, and the original dimm fits in both slots, but the new dimm doesn't fit in both :(
Codegen, I'm not that much of a newbie :)

Just curious ... The pin layout of 2 sticks of RAM look identical, right ?
I am just hoping BB didn't ship you the wrong type of RAM ...

yes that's correct, the pin layout & count is the same. The groove (where it clips on the side when you insert it) is at the same height as the other dimm. Only difference is that the original stick has memory chips on one side, and the new dimm has memory chips on both sides.

If they line up and the notch are in the same spot. I suggest you use a little force to get the module in place.

I've tried, trust me, I didn't want to break the thing though... I called up kingston, they said it should fit also, to push harder :(
I get the stick to 'click' on one side but then I can't put the other side down enough to click it...
