Hot HOT hot HOT deal.

Acer AMD athlon 64 x2 dual core 3800+, 1 gig RAM. No graphics card, but thats a minor purchase. Cant go wrong with this bad boy, the monitor alone is worth $260, let alone the processor.

Found an Acer package at this link (http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=BDL10001601&catid=24014). Currently $799 with a free (but tiny) 64mb USB key.

Looks decent but the 20" LCD is only 1400 x 1050 resolution unfortunately.

The 3800 X2 is 2.0 Ghz core. The 3800+ is single core 2.4 Ghz. Unless you use dual threaded applications, you would be wasting your money on the "downgrade" to the 3800 X2.

The chip companies have figured out how to sell slower computers for more money.

Amazing.....

interesting..thanks for the info, I wouldn't have realized that since 'dual core' has been marketing as the best thing ever since sliced bread!

Back to loving my Celeron D :O

Such a noobie post, at least link it somewhere or be even more vague

Considering the price drops on cpu's i'm not surprised it's at this price, even 20' lcd's aren't really all that much anymore.

Not really... you should know that clock-for-clock an Athlon 64/X2 trounces any Pentium 4, hence AMD's rating systm to dispel "the MHz myth." In single-threaded apps, this chip will more often perform more like a 3.6GHz P4, so it will still be a big upgrade no matter what he's doing.

Also, please note that this thread was brought back from the dead by someone asking "How much is computer worth?" - last post before that was two weeks ago. This week's price is $799: http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?sku_id=BDL10001641&catid=24014&logon=&langid=EN

No arguement here vs. the P4.

I was comparing 2 Athlons. 3800 X2 and the standard 3800+. Give me the standard 3800+ at 2.4 Ghz anyday. Mine runs solid at 2.5 Ghz (mild overclock) all day long equiv. to 4000 rating.
