Refurbished means the manufacturer had to repair/recondition it after it was returned for some reason (malfunctioning, or the buyer changed their mind, etc).

Refurb iPods are better than most other refurbed products out there. I believe you get new headphones, new batteries, and a new outer casing so the product looks like new with no scratches, etc. The only thing reused is the internals. iPod refurbs have the same 1 year warranty as brand new ones.
