There's the news story about it.

Futurephone.com
http://futurephone.com/

Call their number (its actually a number in iowa) and they can route you to a number in any of 50 countries.

This is hot if you already have a package that lets you call north america for free, and or have some sort of unlimited LD plan.

This SHOULD work with cell phones too.....not sure. anyone wanna test it out/give feedback?

edit: Seems that the deal will work with SKYPE (which is free for calls within northamerca for users there)
...therefore...FREE calling to 50 countries worldwide!

since Skype is offering north american calling for free until the end of this year, maybe combine the two and you get free calling to 50 countries:)

edit: tried with Skype and it actually works. Now we have unlimited international calling until the end of this years!!! :) thanks op

it says on the site that if your'e in US you can call US and canada for free til end of year.

does this mean canada can do it too? i'm too scared of getting charged..and it doesn't say it on skype's faq

(and that's computer --> landline or mobile phone right?)

Sorry, dont get your meaning. All calls to Canada/USA from Skype are free for me now.

Question: If I dial that number from Skype, I think they wouldn't trace any tel# to charge, right? Thanks

OK. So, an account with ZERO cent wouldn't make any call to CA/USA, right?

has anyone tried calling a mobile phone in one of the international countries yet?

a lot of the '1010' numbers have different rates for cellphones...so it would make this deal even sweeter.

glad some ppl are making use of the deal.... the countries i want to call arent included.

One problem...How do you "press 1 = English" (or others for other languages)

but doesn't make the system react (it keeps on repeating "press 1 for...."

Hm a bit confused.

When I am calling to say Japan using Futurephone do I dial 011 or as their site mentions 1 first then 011?

thanks

for those of you that don't already know, this company probably makes some of their profit from all of the incoming calls they get. Phone companies in Canada and the USA must pay them connection fees if they(that Iowa number) receives more calls than it makes, so the local phone company is probably sharing revenue with them.

same problem ... sometimes touch-tone is working but not consistent !

you'll just have to key in the number slow and in "bunches"... like 011, pause, country code pause, area code pause...

More importantly did they use Skype?

All calls that I make do not work, even to USA or CANADA.

Is it really FREE?

For callers that have unlimited long distance or nationwide long distance plan’s with their cell or local service provider, yes it will be FREE. If you do not have one of those plans the international long distance portion of the call is free, and you would just pay your normal rate for a domestic long distance call.

Go read faq before you waste your money

Hi folks.. I don't know about you guys but I've been able to successfully place calls to:

- Melbourne, Australia
- London, UK

Can't comment on the voice quality since I just heard the ringer go off and hung up :|

I have a 1000 minutes a month to North America in my phone plan.... so effectively its free for me to call countries in Europe, etc. too... I like it so far... will update this as I try more countries

Response from one of the ****ing idiots ... Since Skype offers free calls within North America until the end of the year, I don't see why it is really not free :!: Well, whether the quality is good enough may be another story ...

You don't need to add the number to the contact. For adding just for your convinience.

for calls in north america, you do not need the 011.
only 1
011 is for international calls.

try it again with just 1 416, etc.

To make it clear once and for all:

This service can let you call 50 countries for Free. You need to be able to call the US for free to make it 100% free.

You have at least two easy options:
1. use a low rate or unlimited USA plan to call the number for free
2. Use Skype - completely free. You don't need any credits on your account to call any USA or Canada number. And touch-tone works perfectly - just go to the dial pane and click away.

This service is excellent and works perfectly - For now. As long as your country is in the list provided and you can get a free call to the states (use the methods above) you are in business. Enjoy it while it lasts. I have a feeling that three years might be a little optimistic.

I smell a scam.

I repeatedly tried to call landlines in Israel, but got a message that the call could not be completed.

Futurephone makes it's money by splitting the termination fee of the Iowa call with the local phone company. Whether or not they complete your call to one of the 50 countries, they make their money, and you get squat.

For those using jajah, i thought int'l calls are free with Jajah? So why don't we just use Jajah and eliminate the middleman (freephone)

scam,. exactly. Thats probably why futurephone choose a little dinky town to locate their server in, since they won't be making any outgoing calls except on the internet. so then that little phone company will be getting huge amounts of incoming calls, in other words, unbalancd in favour of incoming rather than outgoing, and so other phone companies will owe them buckets of money.

and the worldwide long distance calls cost only a few cents a minute now, sometimes even less. thats why they usually don't allow calling cellphones overseas except at a higher rate.
