Honda is telling me that I need to rotate my tires at 8000 kms. Has anyone else done this? I was just going to go for my first oil change. If I don't get it done will it affect my warranty?

Is the tire rotation free??
Generally, tires should be rotated every 10 - 12,000km

No they say that it cost 30 dollars. I thought it was quite weird since its only my first service ever on this car.

after the first oil change at honda... i recommend just going to Costco for all your other oil changes.. plus they rotate tires for free.

every 10k is what they say, but to tell you thte truth on my old set of tires on the CRV I did not rotate them for a good 50k and the tires being stock lasted a 100k with even wear (still had some life in them but since my mom drives the car, I wanted to be safe plus balder tires = more slipping = more stress on the AWD system)

That's what I thought. I have a Honda also and they tried the same crap with me. They're just trying to upsell you to make extra $$$

I agree with Belfour. But you have to purchase tires from Costco to get the lifetime free rotation and balancing. I've bought a set of 4 all-season tires from Costco and now whenever I need rotation I just go there.

I take my Honda's to a private Honda Mechanic in Brampton. Atleast if there is any warranty issue, I can prove to Honda that I only used Honda Genuine parts and the service was performed by one of their factory trained technicians!!!!!

As one of the posters said earlier, I wouldn't risk taking my car to Costco unless Costco is going to install an original Honda oil Filter!!!! That there alone can possibly void any honda warranty!!!! (if necessary, Honda will find any and every excuse in the book to not repair your car because you didn't use original honda parts!!!!)

I really hope Honda isn't that devious. I know Magnuson Moss doesn't apply here but I would still expect them to honor it.

Any car dealer makes money on service.
They pad the service manual to make more money.
I never take my car to the dealer.
I find the best deal on oil changes. Right now it is at smartcircle.com.
Go to the Toronto location. I bought the coupon book 4 oil changes for $35 including tire rotation. Great deal. $8.75 per oil change. I supply my own synthetic oil. I buy it on sale at Canadian Tire or Walmart. I change the oil every 20,000 km. If you actually worry about which place is performing your oil changes you are overthinking. My old Acura 1.6 EL has 317,000 km on it and still going strong. I bought a 2003 Hyundai Elantra and expect similiar mileage from it. I know lots of people are shocked about 20,000 km oil changes but the truth is it works and saves tons of money.

Just a question about people bringing in their cars to their private mechanics...do you get some sort of bill about what was done...etc after service? I don't get one in mine...so I'm just wondering

my mechanic prints out a reciept that shows all parts/labour charged... and it's all stored on the computer too... wouldn't all places be like that?

I personally wouldn't recommend costco for oil changes while the car is still under warranty. I know that Oil is Oil, however if anything should ever go wrong that may be related to the oil filter, then Honda will find every excuse in the book to no cover the warranty because you used an aftermarket oil filter.

That is why I take my Honda's to a certified trained honda tech in Brampton who opened up his own garage. He only recommends genuine honda parts as he is fully aware of the games that the mfg's play when it comes to warranty issues.

ya...the mechanic i'm going to uses Genuine parts for the make only. probably cuz it's a chinese place...u know...no tax?

Oh well...but yea...I dunno how much I saved after going to my mechanic instead of going to the Honda dealership. And rotating the tires....I only do them when it needs it.

Here's the factory recommended servicing for a 2006 Civic Sedan:
http://www.honda.ca/Dealership/ServicePricing8.asp?PriceLevel=2&L=E&model=2&Trim=241&year=2006

You don't have to rotate your tires if you don't want them rotated and it will not affect your warranty.

doesn't the Honda warranty cover your oil changes? If not, can you get em at Costco or some other place and still be covered as long as you use A.I.P.-approved oil?

PS what oil should I get for the Civic if I need to change the oil myself? I went to Cdn Tire and they had all sorts of oils.

Does "synthetic" mean "full synthetic?" There are also a couple grades of oil, and I wasn't sure which one I should use.

thanks

The warranty doesn't include oil changes. You can get them other than Honda dealerships. Just keep the receipts/records of it.

Just had my 1st oil change done at Honda last Sat. 12121 kms with 10% oil life.

Just one more reason to get snow tires and then the rotations are simply done at changeover time. Heck, they become child's play. Get a torque wrench and do them yourself.

Do you bring your own oil to the guy who changes it?

Also, do I really need "Full synthetic" or is "synthetic" good enough?

Sorry I'm such a newbie at car maintenance LOL

You can bring your own oil. If you choose to go synthetic, don't bother with the synthetic blends otherwise you might as well use regular oil. It's your choice whether you want to use synthetic or regular oil. Oh, and stay away from FRAM products. From what I've seen, the quality is a joke.

I don't like Frame either. It is really cheaply made. It is only a couple more dollars for an OEM. It's worth it.

how much does Costco charge for oil changes?

I read on a post somewhere on this board (could not find it through searching again) that someone paid $8.xx per oil change for a package of 4 oil changes somewhere.

Do I need to buy a 4L jug of oil or one of those small 500cc or 1L ones is good enough?

I'll probably make a trip to Cdn Tire tomorrow.

thx

I'm going for the oil change and filter change at Honda for ~$35 (called a few dealers, price is pretty much similar).

Is that an OK deal? I'm not sure what kind of oil they'll give me, considering a jug of full Mobil1 or Castrol synthetic 4L oil is alone $40 at Cdn Tire.

Woudl you guys get the full package which is $48 including checks of different things on the car or is that a ripoff?

Also, as an aside, my car occasionally smells inside (gas rubbery smell) then goes away then after like 30 min. comes back then goes away. Is that a sign that I need to change my oil?

Well, it's probably better getting oil changed at a dealership than it is at Canadian Tire. They will use regular dino oil + an oem filter. I doubt you need to get an inspection of a 2006 car. A "gas rubbery smell" (sulfur?) is not a sign that you need to get an oil change. It could be caused by something burning or mold. Does it smell when you drive hard? Do you think you can get the smell to appear with a mechanic in the car?

if you use synthetic and all ur trips are relatively long then yeah 20,000km is completely reasonable

i'm switchin over to synthetic soon and prolly not gonna change oil till 22000km after that. each of my tanks consist of two seperate 200km highway driving with a lil bit of city inbetween. I could prolly push it for 25,000km without hurting the car using synthetic but id rather not.

hmm maybe I should have bought synthetic oil and gotten it changed somewhere else since I have a new car.

Oh well, too late now.
