Hi, its about time my car gets an oil change and I would like to know where is the cheapest place I can get that done? Last time I changed it at Active, Green & Ross and it was around $28 taxes included for a Lube, oil and filter for my car (toyota rav 4 so it does cost a bit more than most cars), it took more than an hour to get it changed. Is there anywhere that does it faster and maybe cheaper? I think $30 or so is reasonable...
BTW, I looked on the mr. lube site and it says there are some things they recommend for cars that have driven 75k, is it really necassary?
Just look at the cart on the bottom here: http://www.mrlube.com/menus/GTA.pdf

cheap is never the way to go,
You want to go with good price and exp mechanics. Else you'd regret it when something goes wrong

I can never understand why folks look for the cheapest place to get an oil change. You get what you pay for. If you save 2 or 3 dollars on this service, well, you have to ask yourself why the service is so cheap. What are they not giving me? Figure it out. Oil is approx $5 litre (regular oil and you normally need 4 litres) and a filter is about $10 each. Figure it out. If you were doing it yourself it would cost you about $30 plus tax. Yes, you may find the products a bit cheaper but the bottom line is, do you want to do it yourself or pay someone and keep your hands clean.
If you get it done somewhere, you may also get your tires checked (do you do that by yourself? Statistics say no) and visual inspections under and around the car. Do you do that (again, statistics say no), so, all that to say, if you are paying 30 to 40 dollars for an oil change, you are getting your money's worth. But, by all means drive 40 miles and 1 hour each way out of your way to save 50 cents.
If it costs significantly less than you buying the merchandise then you have to question the loss leader aspects or what are they really putting into my car because they also have to take into account the labour that is being expended.
By way of a question or even a survey, what is the cheapest in your town?

The cheapest place is your own drive way. Doing it yourself is fast and gives your car all the due care it needs. But it could be messy if you don't know what to do.
Another option is Costco. They charge $21 for oil change & tire rotation but there's a 2 hour wait. The good thing is, they use a torque wrench manually torque all the wheel nuts so you won't get warped brake rotors later. And, they won't sell you things you don't need (like wipers, PCV valves, rad fluid replacements etc.)
I'd avoid places like Mr. Lube like the plague unless you must have your car back in 10 minutes. They lie try to sell you things you don't need. Plus, they have charges that they don't mention before the work starts (such as enviromental charge). The last time I was there, they told me I "NEED" a new PCV valve because the old one "LOOKS" corroded (I had them shake it to prove that it still rattles). They recommended new air filter ($35 each!) because the old one is "CLOGGED" (it was replaced 12000 KM ago and it's dirty but certainly not clogged). And they recommended the transmission oil change because Mr. Lube's own schedule recommends transmission oil change every 20000KM (my car manufacturer do not recommend transmission oil change). Mr. Lube is all about selling you things you don't need.

Look up KVN Auto Services, they were very fast and affordable (28). Shops don't make money off oil changes, especially at $25-$30 so don't expect them to check your tire pressure, rotate tires, etc... It is somewhat of a loss-leader item so that they can build on a customer relationship.
Oil does not cost $5/L... I get Mobil 1 at $6/L. Castrol GTX, one of the best conventional oil (lowest sulphur content) costs around $2.5/L. A filter will cost you a bit less than $10. I'd rather not do any fluid changes because it can get messy and I don't know where to dispose the fluid properly for free.

I knew someone would find cheaper oil than my "approx $5" statement. Prices were appoximate to make a point and as stated, yes you can get it cheaper.
Loss leaders in the business are there soley to get you in the door to be able to upsell you something else. A smart consumer will know this and take advantage of it. If you go to a $20 oil change spot, be prepared top watch what they are doing and to be firm in "no, I do not want the new _____(fill it in yourself) installed at this time".

Any Canadian Tire will dispose of it for free.
I recommend doing it yourself. You'll save money and lots of time, plus you'll learn how to properly care for your car. Also, when you do it yourself, you have more choices about what you're going to put in your car. Some shops only have cheap oil filters, which can harm your engine over time. Never cheap out when it comes to maintenance on your car, NEVER!

For that price, I go to dealer. I don't need to wait for it because I get 2 way shuttle service and I may even get a free car wash.

I used the Pela 6000 Oil Extractor for Mess-Free Oil Changes. I do not need to lift up my car for an oil change any more. They used this extractor for changing oil in a boat.

All the used oil can be dropped off in any Canadian Tires for recycling.

just bought the same thing 2 wks ago, and did my first oil change. The oil extractor will pay for itself in 1 or 2 oil changes for my car. Definitely worht it. :) Now where to get cheaper oil.. :)
Cost per oil change now: about 6L of Mobil 1 ($40) + 1 filter ~ 13 dollars= 53 dollars.

:( Only 6 Quart capacity, the i6 Benz we have takes 7L of oil :( I guess you could empty it and get pumping again..
The thing is, of the 4 cars in the household, only the Benz is the one with the cartridge type filter that sits near the top of the engine. All the other cars have their filters mounted facing downwards, near the bottom end of the engine, so I'd have to go down there to get at it anyways...
For Oil disposal, just bring your jugs to the garbage transfer stations listed here:
http://www.toronto.ca/garbage/pdf/solidwastedrop-offdepots.pdf
They're open on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

you will just have to pump out 6L, pour it into another container and continue pumping to get the 7L Out :) .. our benz takes 6.7L. Thats' what i have to do.
You can bring ur oil to any CT and they take it for free.

Don't you have to change the oil filter too?
I pay a little bit extra for the OEM filter.

When I was working at a garage many years ago, we paid to have someone take away the used oil.
Last time I visited the garage I use to work at...the people pay the garage for thier used oil.
Crazy huh?

Try street performance on woodbine. Or gilman auto in scarborough, $30 each and gilman even uses motul oil.
You can find the numbers for either on yellowpages.ca
