Hey all,

I found a few decent looking Subaru SVX on the autotrader. Does anyone have any experience with it? Is it a problematic car (I've read most of the problems are tranny and wheel bearings) or other than those 2 issues it's ok? I like its styling and the fact that it has AWD...

ah its the one with the weird windows eh
my neighbour had one but she moved away so i never got a chance to ask her what happened to the car

wikipedia has a list of some common problems with it
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subaru_Alcyone_SVX

like u said, transmision, wheel bearings
but also warped rotors

id look into Lexus SC300/400 too for better reliability
but drinks quite a bit of gas

If reliability is an issue, I would stay away with old Subaru and Lexus.
Get an 94+ Integra, 93+ MX-6, S13 for the similar class

My friend has a LS400 1991, the indication light on the dash board keep turing on...ABS, Airbag....so much things to take care of..and the SC are V8....which are more costly to maintain no matter new car or old car

I like the looks of the SVX, needs some nice 18" racing rims and it would be really hot. In the mix of competitors, I would lean closer to the 300ZX.

As far as reliability, a co-worker's husband had one, and never had problems, couldn't say a bad thing about it.

You are aware that they only came in AT?

Thanks for all the response. Seems like there's quite a few strikes against it, and it seems to be strikes that would leave me stranded!

How does a Eagle Talon/Mitsu Eclispe sound? Should have less issues? I want a fun-to-drive car for the winter, hence the AWD cars. I'm trying to stay away from SUVs.

DSMs are notoriously unreliable. The non-turbo version of the Talon is supposed to be more reliable, but that one's FWD (not sure if it came in AWD).

Nothing is more fun to drive in the winter than RWD (pair it up with winter tires, pretty much mandatory). I miss my old 240SX :'(

My driving skills and winter and RWD just doesn't go together :D just kidding.

How are the DSMs unreliable? Is there any resources proving that? (not saying that you are wrong) I'd like to read more about it.

the turbo form , pre 2000 came in AWD. they just need to be maintained a bit more. but very popular choices. the talon would be typically cheaper than eclipse, and easier to find. since eclipses never existed in canada until 2000.

i have an MR2, all you need is a nice set of snow tires and you are all set for winter.

Friend of mine has a SVX and he loves it .Great car a bit slow for 230hp.I weights to much for the power of the engine. The cost of parts are in the extreme category . It also runs on premium fuel.

I hope you meant "IT weights too much for the power of the engine" and not "I" :D :D :D

All jokes. Thanks for the insight. So I'm guessing no SVX for me >:(

Search for the Talon continues........

Well, I had two friends who each owned a Talon TSI (one auto, one manual). I was also looking for one (1995+) about 4 years ago. There are problems with poor quality of materials, as well as overall reliability problems. The synchros on the manual tranny are prone to wear etc etc. There are several DSM forums where you can find more info on this.

I do have to say, though, when they are running, they are a blast to drive.

As far as your winter driving skills go, no worries. The first car I drove ('89 Volvo 240) was RWD and I used it to perfect my skills to the point where I now prefer driving RWD to FWD.

you should look into the impreza RS coupe, with a sti swap.

or a legacy turbo.

A coworker of mine has an SVX. He's on his 3rd transmission. Luckily, his dealer is very understanding and subsidizes some of the cost of the service, since it's a known issue.
