I'm trying to find a decent deal on an LCD monitor. Somthing good quality, but it can be basic. I dont need it to swivel to portrate view, or have speakers or anything like that.

I'm not exactly sure what to look for in a good monitor. Is widescreen better? I'm thinking that it wouldnt be that good, and just a waste of money. Also whats an acceptable refresh rate? I'll be using it for web/games/movies so I know it needs to be somewhat fast. Also what about resolution or contrast ratio? I'm not sure what to look for.. Like 550:1 means nothing to me.

I have an address in the US I can ship to as well so If the deal is good enough I'd be willing to do that, but Canadian deals I'd prefer.

thanks

if you're not that particular, the Hanns 19" models at Tiger are always on sale.

# Response Time: 5ms
# Contrast Ratio: 700:1
# Brightness: 300cd/m2
# Resolution: 1440 x 900 Widescreen
# Viewing Angle: 150 H / 135 V
# 2 Channel 1.5W stereo speakers built-in

So for $228, you get 5 ms response time, fast enough, you get 700:1 good enough, brightness, good enough, resolution, 1440x900 not the typical 1280x1024, also widescreen, also comes with speakers, but don't expect great quality. just something to listen to. If you ordered a few days earlier, you could have gotten $40 off, with just a $30, it's still worth getting....(76433/76422))
visit newegg.com and read the reviews of the monitor, I don't know the exact model but it's probrably a hanns-g, check also tigerdirect, and reviews online. Real good hype.

great return policy if you don't like it. It might be cheaper in store than online.

Remember that tigerdirect charges hefty shipping fees but staples offers free deliver.....that is, orders over $50, which is definately a yes for an lcd.

I have a regular 19" monitor right now.. If that LCD monitor is widescreen does that mean it will be just wider then what I have now, or does it mean it will be a thinner and longer screen to make it widescreen?
------
Anyone know does a warranty cover dead pixels?

Thanks for all the replies

The measurement is the diagonal across the screen, so a 19" widescreen will be shorter and wider than a regular 19".

IMHO, widescreen is great if you want to watch movies, as most movies are now in WS format. But a standard 4:3 19" monitor actually gives you more usuable screen area, and cost less than WS format.

Check out Costco, they have some nice Samsumg and Viewsonics on display 19" 4x3 and WS and also 20".
It comes down to personal preference...

Would this monitor be ok? Dell 20.1" widescreen. What I'm worried about is that it says "Response Time 16ms typical" That bad for an LCD?
I'm trying to find one at Dell because they have the 3yr warranty. Maybe there's a better one?

That one from Staples is sold out at the moment. :(

Email staples.ca and ask them about the hannspree lcds and mention your area or postal code. I"ve been watching the hannspree lcd. They had 10 total, sold so there was 3 left, now theres 6 out of 13....must be a hot item. Anyways, 16 ms...even 25 ms...you probrably won't notice ghosting really. More of a technical spec. The hannspree came with a paper, it said it has 3 years warranty....I dunno if their good though. 19" for $198, or 20.1" for $399. Is the extra inch, the extra inputs, the extra features that much of a necessity for you? I don't need that stuff, well the hannspree comes with speakers which I like.

I have it, it's real nice and the model that comes from staples is jw199dpb

Oh.....and the talk about 6 and 8 bit panels...I've noticed that dithering thingy....when you watch a video that's small and not have it stretched, sometimes u can see it. Probrably because theres less pixels in that area to dither so u notice it more than if it were stretched to the entire screen. Putting some 1440x900 wallpapers kind of makes the images look almost life like........I really like to leave my monitor on and just look at it.

Yeah, I wouldnt spend $400 on it thats for sure. They're selling for a fairly good price on Ebay tho. Having the USB and the differernt connections and Picture and Picture would be nice. I was mostly worried just about ghosting.
I'd rather find that one at Staples. Cheaper and safer to buy thats for sure. I'll email Staples and find out.

thx

Of course now that it's finally back in stock, the coupon is no good anymore.
