Ok, so i just got back from an awesome vacation in Alberta where the people were super nice, and the scenery was too. I had a great time!
As soon as the plane lands in Toronto though....
I ask a lady if she could pass my backpack which was in the overhead bin above her seat and she sighs as if I'm asking her to give up her first born. "I must be back in Toronto" I say to myself.
The Park 'n' Fly bus driver gets mad at me cause I don't know which section (by number) my car is parked in. I say "It doesn't really matter man, you can drop me off anywhere in the parking lot and I'll find it." But this miserable bastard lectures me on remembering where i park my car and gets pissy with me.... So irrational. It's not even his problem. I wasn't upset about it either.
It's 1:30am and a guy decides to ride my ass on the 401 for no particular reason.
I decide to cheer myself up and go down to Dundas and Spadina for late night chinese food before I go home. House of Gourmet is closed, so I go acros the street to the SEAFOOD RESTAURANT across the street and to the left of the Green P parking lot. When I go up to pay, the manager shows me a bill of $9.75 and as he's swiping my card he says "You pay tip. I put $11...$12." So I'm like WTF?? "You can't just give yourself a tip out of my account" I say. But he pretends that his "INGRISH NOT GOOD." in hopes of getting away with it. To make a long story short, he demanded a tip from me and I didn't give him one.
THEN, the Green P parking comes to $1. I hand the guy a $10 bill cause that's all I had. He says, "You don't have change?" and I said "nope, that's all I got." And he sighs and shakes his head at me.....
I have not exagerated one bit. This was all very true and it happened tonight. I want to go back to Alberta...
WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE IN THIS CITY??? Has everyone here lost their minds?

hmm .. I never had this problem.
Then again, i always bring change, i always tip if eating in, i try and change lanes if people are tailgating me, i only ask myself if i forget where i park my car, and i never ask people to do my labour work for me unless i'm physically unable to do so.
So .. maybe it's different depending how you fit in ...

that Seafood restaurant............is that Rol San ?
If it is......those guys are sneaky bastards......we were eating there late night............a few of us..............they "accidently" added the bill incorrectly which was quite a bit more plus the tax..........about $9 worth....
We had 4 dishes..........luckily someone was paying attention and caught the mistake...........we were all tipsy and happy since we had gone clubbing before.
No apologies, nothing......
Anyway, yeah most Torontonians are self-centred........

I got back from a trip to the States, and both times felt disheartened on my return.
I found people in Houston to be so friendly, holding a door open for someone actually got you a "thank you" as opposed to the blank stare you get here.
I used to think Richmond Hill people were nicer than Toronto people (generally speaking) but I think too many people from Richmond Hill work in Toronto, and bring the attitude home with them every night.
Case in point, this morning I forgot to buy tokens for the TTC, but I managed to find 2 twooneys, enough for a cash fare. I wanted change, so I waited in line at the TTC counter, and when it was my turn I asked the guy for a single fare and gave him my $4. He gave me $2.75 and told me that he wanted to see me put it in the collector before he gave me the rest of my change. WTF?
I had to call a University in Illinois to get some information about an upcoming conference I wanted to attend, and the person on the other end was actually helpful and found the information for me - she was polite and pleasant. I called York to get some information, and I got bounced around to 3 different faculties (why are Atkinson admin people such bastards?), and then when I finally got to someone who was better positioned to help me, she said I can check out the York website and then hung up on me. The reason I was calling was because the website page that had the neccessary information wasn't working!

lol...there is a difference between ppl that work during the day and during the night.... :D
but i do know what you mean and i would love the school system to teach manners again cause we have a whole generate of parents (in general) that taught their kids to be self centred.
also there has been a lot of fraud, scams, etc in Toronto...so ppl are skeptical for a reason.

I was in NYC a few weeks ago, and I didn't know where the south seaport was, so I asked someone on the street for directions. Not only did he give detailed street-by-street directions, he said "you know what, it's on my way, follow me."

I encountered similar attitudes when I was in NYC a short while ago.
I grew up in Toronto and still go back to Toronto on a very regular basis. Everyone in Toronto is so bloody rude, it still shocks me to this day.
In NYC though, which for some reason has a bad reputation still, everyone was very polite to me, helpful (I got lost a few times), and people held doors open for each other.
In Toronto, if someone holds the door open for you, watch your back as you go through because they're probably trying to steal your wallet.

like Scarborough, Richmond Hill, Markham, Etobicoke and Brampton.
Scarborough's the worst of all of them
Note that I consider the airport to be Etobicoke even if its technically in 'Sauga, just cuz of the long distance it is from 'Sauga city centre. And yeah, the people at the airport suck.
good places: 'Sauga, North York's yonge st. strip, most of Downtown.
'Sauga and Scarborough is like a night and day difference....
only thing they have in common is both have loads of brown ppl.
except the brown ppl in Scarlem are all punks, whereas the ones in Sauga are mostly nice(r) people.

The other day I was walking around downtown (Toronto) and I met a guy wearing a Boston Red Sox jersey (guess he was in town to see the game), so I jokingly said to him that he was "wearing the wrong jersey". So we launched into a long conversation about how he had been planning this trip to Toronto for 6 months, and how he had been wandering the streets for 5 hours and how amazed he was at how friendly and helpful people were. He said whenever he stopped to look at a map for more than 5 seconds, people would come up to him and ask if he needed help.
He thought people in Toronto were the most friendly people in the world. He said he would definitely be coming back next year to catch a few more games. He was enjoying it so much that he was actually singing "O Canada" as he walked away
Anyway just goes to show you that the OP's experience doesn't sum it all up.

yesterday i had the joy of driving from richmond hill to markham, i don't know what it is but drivers up there are far more selfish than they are down in toronto and scarborough.
Also it's like someone went and disabled all their turn signals or something because no one seems to know how to use them. how in the world are you supposed to know why someone is slowing down? taking a left? taking a right? are you talking on the phone and being stupid?should i change lanes? wtf is the deal people use your turn signals. the lazy drift from lane to lane was the most annoying. i seriously wish that cops would ticket drivers for offenses other than speeding sometimes.
And i don't know what the op is talking about, but i always hold doors open for people and i almost always get a thanyou. i've seen people helping women with strollers carry them down or up stairs, especially in scarborough (vic park tation doesn't have an elevator yet).i've seen complete strangers helping each other out on the street plenty of times. Just because you had a few negative experiences doesn't mean that toronto is bad.
Whats far more likely is that people treated you badly because you were in a bad mood having come back to toronto and you were combatitive. Also what makes you so special that you feel another passenger who is just as tired as you should lift your bag for you? Do you think the lady you asked to get your bag for you was any less tired than you were? seeing that she was on the flight with you from alberta, maybe your thread should have read "all albertans rude and unhelpful." Did you offer to help anyone instead of demnding help? I find that if you're nice to people they're usually nice to you.
As for some shady restaurant owner demanding a tip from you, he could have set up shop in alberta, would that have meant that all albertan's are rude and crooked?
I find your thread to be quite pointless and all the examples you gave for people being rude could most probably be blamed on you.

actually the real reason I put on my flame-retardant jacket was because i was going to say "Richmond Hill people are mean and unsocial... unless you're chinese!" but then i realized i would've been lynched by 60% of the RFD population, so... errr....

You must be rude so you got that treatment back.
I thought same about Toronto years back. Not now.
But its not like that. Its how you approach to others.
In Toronto if you act smartypants people care less for you.
They don't have time for a prick.
Of course there might be other reasons like you may be rude, ugly, black, brown, yellow, fat, with big tummy, smelly.
Remember return journeys are tiresome and not cheerful for everybody.
Tired people will help you if you are nice to them and ask respectfully.
I have had great experience from Toronto people.
Women have their own way responding and help you when they wish and not when you want.
Women care when you respect them and will help you.
Just don't be prick when you visit other cities. Those will remember a rude person from "Toronto".
They will help you that time keeping quite and publicize afterward that Toronto people are jerks.

You can't compare Alberta to Toronto. You can complain about anywhere you go. I can go to Alberta and complain that there aren't enough flights out of the city, no shuttlebus at the airport to take me to my car (which I can't remember where I parked), not enough late night chinese seafood food places, no convenient parking right across the street from the chinese seafood place that's open late night.
To live in a big city you have to have the right mindframe. Toronto offers too much to me for me to hate it. I was in Alberta a few months ago and it's just not for me. I can easily list as many complaints about Alberta as you have for T.O. I'm sure you're being judged just as harsh by people reading this as you are judging people from T.O. Doesn't seem fair does it?

Been living in downtown Toronto since June, and overall, people have been amazing. Had someone hold the door for me at College Park only this morning cuz I was carrying a few packages.
Only been to Alberta once - I swear people looked at me like I was from another planet the whole time I was there... I kept thinking, "Do I have a sign saying stare at me? Do I look like a killer or something?". Finally realized it was cuz I was wearing trackpants... I guess that's a cardinal sin there! :D
I'll take Toronto any time.

Man I love toronto, I think the people are great here! Of course you run into a few jerks, but I try to look at the majority.
I think one of the problems people have with toronto is the "mob mentality" as a group, people can be jerks, but when you single them out you find a lot more polite people. For instance, I'm one of those people who smile at random people when I am in a good mood, and I say sorry or excuse me when I bump into people, and once I do that, I almost always get a smile back from the person. That doesn't happen in Hamilton.
Granted, I wouldn't say Toronto is the MOST polite place. I went out west (Vancouver) and the bus drivers are always willing to give your directions, and when people leave the bus, more than half of them say thank you to the bus driver. I went to McDonald;s and even the garbage can said thank you to me!

I was surprised at how people in NY all of a sudden became nice, and considerate, and communicative. You can ask most NY'ers a question walking down the street and they will actually stop and do their best to answer it.
Something has to be done about Toronto people. I have lived here for a long time, but every time I come back from traveling to other places I notice that people get worse and worse.

One reason Toronto is the greatest city in the world, and it has to do with multi-culturalism.
I, like many, come from a place where people are rude, dirty, selfish, anything you want to call them, they are. I wouldve been raised like that too if I still lived there. Luckily I came here when I was very young. Now that i'm in Toronto, just from the way people have treated me, I have become very thoughtful and polite. I smile when people smile at me, I hold doors for others, always pull over for people that have car trouble, and even throw in a little change when total strangers are a bit short for their orders. I'm sure alot of other people have changed for the better from being in this wonderful city too.
Albeit there are places here where people can be rude, but this is a massive city and the majority of the city are very civil and thoughtful

I lived in Alberta for 2 years and I found the people out there are way more down to Earth and laid back, although that is the drawback. They're stuck in time, not progressing. Sure they're nice but man, a little too dimwitted for me. They also hate everyone from TO so that was a negative aspect of Western life.
I also lived in Ottawa for 2 years, and I find that city the best city in Canada. Clean, friendly, next to party-town Quebec, mid to upper class, polite, etc. Too bad the Winters get real cold over there.
What's funny is that us Torontonians are annoyed with one another yet foreigners (like Americans and Britons) praise our friendliness.

The thing with such a big city is that you have all kinda of people - rude and polite both. Don't forget Toronto is the 5th largest city in North America... with over 5 million people in the area, a few are bound to be rude. You probably just got a whole bunch on one day.

it's not that bad in Toronto :D
I think it everyone on RFD (based in Toronto) would all treat ppl nicer...that would make a difference :D
Just don't drive...Toronto Drivers are rude as hell...but so are many other megacities...with traffic lights every 100 meters
especially asian drivers.. asian drivers are HORRIBLE you walk in front of their car and they try to go around you.

I've also noticed this when I visit my cousin in Philadelphia. People are very courteous, at least in the suburbs of Southampton. When I get back to Toronto one can definitely notice the difference. As soon as I cross the border the feeling of "oh shyte! here we go again" comes over me every time.
