Ok, I hardly ever go there. And i've never seen a cockroach in Toronto in my life. My friend wanted to get noodles and congee.
So, we ordered a congee and a Sing Chow Carrot Cake. About half the cake I was eating, I took some more into my bowl and ate some and saw a black thing in my bowl. I picked at it with a chopstick, and it was a COCKROACH.
I don't like to badmouth them but I felt really ******** for not taking a picture. My friend, she didn't do anything, I guess she was shocked as well, but I had to spit everything out and was too occupied in being disgusted and didn't use my head.
The assistant manager came. Said we could have dinner for free (the bill was only about $10) I just wanted to leave, so I didn't stand up and make a scene. The table next to us saw and told us they would never go again.
This was about 2 hours ago....my friend is a witness and the table of 2 next to me are witnesses. i feel really sick now. and i regret i have no pictures. but i want to WARN EVERYONE NOT TO GO THERE.
This is the Leslie and Finch location.

btw, i'm never going to go again. if i'm physically sick from the germs of the cockroach, i might pursue legal action. but if anyone knows a HEALTH INSPECTOR, please tell them to make a visit. I honestly feel really sick right now.
it's totally ruined my day, which was a LONG DAY of studying at university.
and...the cockroach was about thumb-size, with the legs...and it was inside the carrot cake. honestly, when i think about it i feel sick all over.
is there anyway i can do better next time? i'm telling my friends now and one said i took a "settlement" in not paying so i cannot sue them any longer. what is the best course of action when i'm in this type of situation? and what could i do?
i just felt really stupid today. i feel sick, tired, stupid, and "lucky". i guess i should buy 649.

oh my thats sad to hear i love congee wong i go to their kennedy and hwy 7 location all the time and nothing like that has ever happened to me so i was shocked to see where this occured
i'd be pretty disgusted too reminds when i was eating corn on the cob and found a nice worm jutting out after i took a bite...nice image eh?
did you check if they have that food safety pass sign hanging in the front maybe you should call them and get them inspected so they will clean up their act.

no..its not a rare occurance at any restaurant. what can you sue them for? nothing, this is not the states.
calling in health inspector or health dept wont do anything as well.
accept it as something that can happen when you eat out and move on

Unless you die no one is seeing any lawsuites. This is Canada, no sueing for profit.
If you really knew what went on behind that kitchen door you would probally never eat out again. There are offten bugs and what not in everything you eat. But after all, what you dont know cant hurt you.

meh it happens, file a report, get over it, no point wasting your life thinking about it, you probaby ingested plenty of insects at a restaurant without you knowing throughout your life

that is pretty gross..........a cockroach the size of your thumb in the middle of the cake ?
argghhh........i think i would have thrown up right there and then........you should have.......
But bugs and other incidents are a part of eating out. My friend was eating at Spring Rolls at Dundas/Bay (near Eaton Centre) and she bit into a shrimp and a staple jabbed her mouth............the staple was inside the shrimp !
Man, that was nasty, she was so scared........what happens if she swallowed the staple and it got lodged in her stomach........
We brought it to the waiter's attention, he said "oh"....and had the dish re-cooked I think. Anyway, my friend didn't want to finish the lunch, even though they gave her a "fresh" one.
The waiter had the audacity to charge her for the full lunch too. We complained and he took the item off........

Roaches in every restaurant. So it's ok? I guess that's why these restaurants don't change? What type of attitude is this?

something similar happened to me at the other Congee Wong location... hwy 7 & Kennedy.
we were seated at the booth and then I saw this huge cockroach climb on the wall right next to me. I totally freaked out and backed away. And that's when my brother noticed another one. We stood up and immediately told the manager and waitress. They tried to swat it but the cockroaches scrambled away. And then they said it's okay for us to sit there now. I was like, "Hell no. We're not sitting there." So they sat us elsewhere. I wanted to leave but our friend who really wanted congee said we'd already ordered so we better just eat and go. I had lost my appetite by then though. So during the meal, another party came down and the waitress sat that party at the same booth like nothing happened and that seat wasn't infested crawlies.

it's attitude of accepting reality.
bugs in restaurants is like death and taxes, inevitable part of life.

Should have taken a picture for posterity....and just because there is the possibility of roaches in every restaurant doesn't mean they're justified in allowing this practice.

I accept bugs might be in every restaurant like mosquitos and stuff. they just get in. but cockroaches means that place is REALLY dirty. and even if there are cockroaches... it's ONE thing for it to just be in the restaurant, totally different for it to actually BE in the food. EWW. What if someone had taken a bite?!?!

lol we go crazy because we can see the bug, but in reality...There are tons of bug parts in our everyday foods. There was a Foods Canada list that said that there can be % amount of bugs/maggots in different products... The herbs and seasoning had a LOT.

i just woke up and i still feel kind of sick, like some nightmare. yes, i'm lucky i didn't eat it... but i can't believe some people are saying this is reality...no it's not. that's as irresponsible as saying, assault and robbery happens everyday, so it's ok if you get robbed, you can't do anything about it.

A couple of years back I went to a karaoke lounge and found a cockroach in my beer. Could have come from the ice in the beer perhaps. They poured room temperature beer over ice. No kidding.
The next time I went back, I found two cockroaches in my beer. :cheesygri

Bugs, flies, cockroaches and mice and definitely NOT part of a regular restaurant. Now they can certainly appear due to things like unsanitary conditions, old leftover food sitting around or just the weather when mice start finding places indoors to live, but cockroaches - If a restaurant seriously has cockroaches then you should never go back. Cockroaches are quite hard to get rid of (these things can survive nuclear fallouts) and when's the last time you saw any restaurant close for fumigation? It doesn't happen. Cockroaches once there will stay for life.

When you turned on the kitchen light it was like jurassic park. They would scatter. The boss had it fumigated and 6-7 years later I have yet to see one cockroach. Owners who care will do something about it.

I went to a similiar place, I think it was the same kind of restaraunt and name but it was at Hwy7/Woodbine(First Markham Place), and I was eating fried rice, and I bit a screw. I took it out of my mouth, was staring at it for a minute or two, finished eating and told a waitress. She was surprised(and that was about it), quickly ran back, a cook came out(He was a scruffy 7x year old man....) and exclaimed, 'I was looking for that!' in cantonese.

I've never seen screws in dishes at the one I work at but I see how it could happen. One time this customer found a huge piece of metal inside her cake. She kindly pointed it to us and the boss went to investigate. The metal actually came from the baking pan and the piece of metal is used to bind the pan together. It somehow dislodged itself and ended up being baked into the cake.
The lady was really nice and she understood what had happen. If you find screws in your plate it could have very well come from the wok or pan that they use to cook with. Definately possible.

yeah i'm definitely not going to another congee wong ever though, it's not like i can't afford to go to a better restaurant. i never ever go there until my friend made me. the service is bad as well.
i'm just unlucky these days. but even if it might be an isolated incident, i'm still sick to the stomach.
