In August, there was news about a free Vista upgrade for "Vista-ready" computer purchases made starting in October:

Has anyone heard anymore about this? I'm trying to decide if I should build my own system now or wait to be eligible for the upgrade. Thanks.

I just unpacked a Dell Notebook PC for a co-worker today, and it had a Windows Vista Ready, sticker on it.

Hmm...I just got my Dell Inspiron 6400 yesterday as well and it was accessorized with a snazzy Windows Vista Capable. Any significance?

Just taking a guess here, but my thinking is that deal would only apply to the big name brands. Maybe if you buy XP between a certain time would qualify, but that would probably only be for retail versions.
Anyways, since October isn't far away, I would wait. Maybe there will be some deals on Thanksgiving weekend.

I forgot to mention that I'd be purchasing a Dell system (Dimension 9200), so I'm assuming this would be a big name brand, right? :)
But it's true that October isn't that far away, but I just didn't want to wait unnecessarily if this whole thing was just a rumour.
And to the others, I'm not sure of the significance of the stickers. It was my understanding you had to get a coupon as well for the free upgrade, but what do I know?

The stickers have no significance at all in terms of free software. They just state that the computer meets the minimum system requirements for Vista.

no different than THX certified speakers, they are just built to the THX standards.

Okay, sorry. When you said build your own ...

So look at it as waiting for a Dell deal. I know it's difficult when you're set on buying a new computer, but it's only a few more weeks :). I still say to wait for possible Thanksgiving deals, even if this Vista free upgrade thing wasn't in the mix.
