Here is what I'm trying to do. I have cat5 prewired in the house. Right now I have it used for phone only using 2 pairs. I would like to use it for the network now.
I have seen that you only need 2pairs of wire for 10BaseT to work. (correct?)
What about 100BaseT, is it also only 2 or 3 pairs needed? When are 3 or 4 pairs used?
So if possible what I would like is to have 1 cat5 wire used to do 2phone lines and a 100BaseT network. Does this work?
Thanks

The extra pairs help in noice reduction. You could probably run two phone lines over one cat5 wire but I would not try to do 100 megabits over anything other than the full wire.

I have seen some with 3pairs used. Would this be a better option. 1 phone line and 3 pairs for network (for the more imporant rooms).
From the diagram listed below, I know I must have the orange pair and Green pair working. Which should be my 3rd. (Sorry, my cut and paste isn't formating the diagram the best)

Although usable, it is never recommended to split a line for use between phone and data.
This is especially true in the home enviroment where phones are analog. The ring voltage (AC) will induce or radiate to the nearby pairs of wire, in this case the ethernet pairs, and since they travel along the same lengh, in the same jacket. This will usually result in network errors. It's probably not enough to cause physical damage to the computer, but would be annoying, and also, the faster the network, the more sensitive the network is to external noise/interference.

just make all the plugs DATA jacks and use VOIP phones which plug into an ethernet port, and have a passthru port on the back so you can still plug a device into the wall jack. thats what Idid in my house, or of ur brave, run new wires to all the jacks.
