The process is simple...
1. make sure you have both the e-test and certification documents from the seller if they are providing.
2. The seller's signature on the original ownership card with date and address.
3. I would type up a sale receipt that states the type of car, price and loan information that might be necessary to proctect yourself. Get it signed by the seller in front of a witness and give a copy to the seller.
4. Go to ministry, show the docutments and get it registered under your name.
hope this helps.

Good information but #3 is not 100% correct.
The seller is responsible to show you the UVIP (used vehicle information package) and that will indicate if there is lien on the vehicle with other general information such as the car VIN #. You and the seller then have to sign both the UVIP package and the back of the original ownership card in order to register at ministry (along with e-test and safety).
Also you would have to indicate the sold price of the vehicle on the UVIP and using that later on to pay the PST at the ministry.
P.S: have a qualified mechanic to inspect and check car fax prior the purchase.

Assuming you've done the research and this car is everything you expect
 With the seller:
- Check VIN to verify the car matches the ownership and all the other documents.
- Look through the Used Vehicle package for any leans or accidents, check page numbers to be sure its all there.
- Pay the seller first either with a certified chq (only can be done at your home branch) or at your home branch.
- Get the Ownership form signed by both of you
- Get Bill of sale (different from ownership) signed as well
- Get Safety Standards Certificate
- Get Vehicle emissions pass report
 On your own:
- Once the car is yours, call your insurance company and say you'd like to add this car, then you can use your existing insurance account number as Proof of Insurance
- Bring your own plates to put onto the vehicle once the seller remove his, use that plate to at least drive home with the car or to the licensing office.
- If using your old plate bring the Plate portion of your vehicle permit
- VISA to pay for PST and other stuff if required.
Bring all of this to the licensing office and register for new plates or if possible use your old plates.
All this can be done on the day of sale.

check car fax prior the purchase.
So you can do car fax for canadian private care sales as well? I used to think it was for our american friends only.....
Can you also purchase some kind of warranty right after a private sale through a dealer just to protect yourself?
