I rented a Hyundai Accent this week and it's raining today and I can't figure out how to use the windshield wipers. I can push up on the winshield wiper lever thing to the right of the steering wheel and the windshield wipers will go on, but as soon as I let go the lever drops and they immediately go off. in other words I can't seem to get it to lock in place and stay on. I can get the back wipers to work, adjust the speed of the wipers, know how to wash the windshield, etc., but I just can't seem to get the wipers to stay on while I'm driving through the rain. Hope someone can help before my commute home this evening! Thanks! :)

instead of pushing the stalk up/down... grab the end of the stalk, and then turn it away from you. if that does not work, turn it towards you.

bingo, you can now see in the rain lol

Look in the glove, every rental car (or at least the ones I have rented) have the car manual in the glove box. Just find the page on this and it will tell you how to switch them on.

Thank you both! I will try again this evening... hopefully one of these things will work, worst case scenario I'll check out the manual.
I feel silly asking such a basic question but I've only ever driven Ford/Mercury so I feel a bit like a fish out of the water with the controls on this car.
Have a good afternoon!

Have you tried pushing the stalk down? Many vehicles have a "mist" function on the wiper stalk for a one-touch wipe, which is what you're doing. The always-on wiper settings are frequently in the oppposite direction.

If you have not looked in the manual or if you have not called the rental agency or a Hyundai dealer but have had time to go on this forum to ask, well, .....
