I am thinking to get a custom licence plate, and wondering what is the best way to protect plate being rusted or scratched. Thinking of putting those plastic hard cover ? Is it the one way to protect it ? Not sure if it can protect it from rusting. Any comments ?

I have clear ones on my car and got pulled over, had to go in the next day to prove I removed them and they ripped up the ticket. I put them back on when I got home.
Cops go on a blitz now and then and here is the Motor Vehicle Act regulations on plastic plate covers...

Number plate to be kept clean

yeah well you must be extremely lucky, cause most of the ppl i know had covers no problems whatsoever, and yeah cops drove behind them and did nothing to them.......you'll be fine with covers if your plate is visible.

maybe you can purchase it now, but use it when you receive your car......not sure......anyways even if not, just don't give anyone your plate combo so they won't steal it from you.

I have also been pulled over and got a fix-it ticket for having a plastic cover. I think there was a thread a while back about them?

I thought it was legal (in Toronto anyways) to have clear plastic covers with no colour tint.
http://www.citynews.ca/news/news_2017.aspx
"Police say it's already tough enough to read a licence plate during a pursuit without the added obstruction of tint and/or colour."
"...but just remember, the only ones that are legal are those that are clear, or merely frame the licence plate."

The opinion of whether the plate covers are clear enough is upt p the Officer. If he is having a bad day or is a bit behind in his quota, you may be the one to get a ticket.
Andro, yea I was lucky because I believe the fine could have been $125.00, and I did not pay. Do not pass advice that can get you a fine. The law is clear and it does depend on the generosity of the one who enforces the rules not a forum opinion.

THe main thing is not the cover is covering up the plate #, but it is the expiry sticker that is the important part.
The funny thing is, almost all dealerships give you their own clear cover with their ad on it. Or its the one that is a border that also may cover the sticker.
So they themselves are breaking the law.

The question was about protecting the plate from rocks etc, particularily if you have a vanity plate. Covering the sticker was never an issue. The protection is primarily for the front plate, that has no sticker anyway.
Also, I do not believe that any dealer gives a plate cover (or have never seen one yet) for your car, almost all give you just a frame that have their names all over it, so no breaking of the law is taking place.

You're already too late to order custom plates to arrive at the same time as your car. I believe it takes 6-8 weeks to get custom plates made. Plus you don't need a car to put them on, just order them and register once they arrive. In the mean time you'll have to get regular plates and simply transfer the sticker.

You dont have to worry about rust with new plates, the damn things wont rust even if you try and make em rust. The only thing you really have to worry about is rock chips on the front plate, but the rear will be fine.

Yes, that's what I plan to do. Transferring my regular plate to the new car, and get the custom # later

I think this has been suggested before... as a member of RFD you should just use regular plates and print your "message" on a piece of paper and tape it to your rear window.
