Hi guys,
Just brought my car into Canadian tire for the 12K maintenance to take advantage of this deal (oil change, tire rotation, free emergency car starter for $40):
http://www.flyermall.com/web/flyer/flyerPreview.html?pNo=26&sid=26
But they didn't have my cabin filter available. Does anyone know if I can buy this myself and change it. I'll have to check the owner's manual to see how complicated it is to change, but from what i've heard it's not that bad.
Anyone know where to get the filter or how to change?

if you want the manufacture one, go to your dealer. If you want aftermarket, then Canadian Tire has it, the one you went to just were probably OOS

I had the air cabin filter on my rav4 changed about a year ago, it was about $50 I think. I'd go for a aftermarket one next time, but I did use mine for over 90k. :)
Thanks for the canadian tire deal, I'm gonna take advantage of that deal too.

What? why would you want to change the cabin air filter that early? Only change it every 25k . You're only at 12k you're way overdoing it buddy.
Oh and next time even Crappy tire give me money for taking my car in i still wouldnt. That emergency car charger is only $15 ( weekly sale), and it barely works for small cars. Next time no matter what dont bring your new car to Crappy Tire. Unless you hate your car.

You change it when it's dirty.
If it's filthy after 12k kms, change it. But if you wanna breath all that crap in, by all means, don't change it.

I agree totally, why are you letting crappy tire touch your car, a NEW car none the less.
I'll be surprised if they actually changed your oil, if they did it's crappy motomaster POS anyway.
If I were you I would worry about their diry hands contaminating the inside of your engine oil cap, dirty filthy funnels used to pour oil in contaminating your engine than your 12k new cabin filter.

I too agree. Why would you let CDN Tire do anything to a brand new car? I thought this post was a joke.

The air seems fine to me. I was just following the maintenance schedule listed on the Toyota website.
As for taking it to Canadian Tire, I didn't realize it would be that bad. I would have taken it to Toyota for the annual oil change, but I was lured in with the free emergency car starter deal.
I guess I'll stick to Toyota.

Not worth wrecking a brand new car for. And don't worry, CT won't be there either if you have a claim. Many years ago they damaged my master brake cylinder and told me to talk to their head office. Never got resolved.

But what can they really scew up with the oil change. Isn't that pretty standard and typical work?
They did tell me I had a nail in my tire (cost $29 to fix it), but I didn't actually check. I took their word for it.

There are quite a few case where they forgot to put oil in it or forgot to put oil cap on. Search around you will hear horrible stories.

LOL is that your ego talking?
Yeah sure he sounds like he would know its dirty. Many other maintainances are also based on mileage. So dont give me crap that your ego is bigger.

We're not dealing with ego at all. Simply said, you change it when its' dirty. I'm sure he's not that slow. I believe I've met him before (X-240s years ago), seemed like a bright guy. I'm sure anyone would beable to recognize a really dirty cabin air filter from a fairly clean one, albiet with abit of help.
Maintence items such as cabin air filter, oil, and brakes, are not always set in stone. You periodically check them, and change them when they're dirty. Why do you think automotive companies have developed sophisticated computer algorithms to calculate your oil life (I believe our last oil change on our GM-make said we had 25% remaining on our oil life, after 6,000kms on DINO oil, how do you figure that, when the usual recommendation on oil changes with dino oil are at 5k kms?)
They're really based on where you drive too. Such as one driving 12,000kms in the downtown core, would, most certainly suck up more dirt and filth through your cabin air filter, than say mostly country driving, of the same mileage.
It seems YOU'RE the one with the ego problem, as seen by your first post in this thread.
Edit: Here's instructions for doing it, if you ever go through with it:

annual oil change?
Seriously, why CT with a new car? I wouldn't go to CT until my car is old and rusty like the rest of the crap that they get.

I changed my cabin filter at 130k (first time) on the crv, it looks like **** with leaves and everything in it (new one was soo clean), ac blew alot better and air was somewhat cleaner smelling.
I bought my cabin filter on ebay for like 18 bucks shipped. Installed it my self (not easy to do on the first gen CRV you gotta remove a metal bar to get the damn door open, much easier on the 2nd generation crv)
I'd check local camry forums (im sure they exist) and see if anyone has done it, on the crv's and most other hondas its behind the glove compartment, not sure where toyota put theres but im guessing somewhere there....ebay is your friend

Also 12k is very early, id wait till 50k or so to change it.

Another tip when changing the cabin air filter, is to spray down the enclosure with the fan running, abit of lysol, to kill any germs in there

I actually read somewhere that the oil life monitors on vehicles are fairly accurate and people tend to change their oil too often (count me as one of those and I use Synthetic).
We are probably so used to the old way of doing things (change every so many miles or so many months), that it will take time before we trust the electronics to tell us when to do things because we would rather spend an extra few dollars on a oil change rather than replace an engine.
On a side note, does the oil life monitor go past 0% into the negatives, I have a co-worker that has probably never changed oil in his car because his Toyota is so reliable he doesn't have to (yup, what a dumbass) and I feel sorry for anyone that buys his used vehicles.

I change mine every 20-25k. It gets quite dirty by then.

I think you should ask about that...because you don't want them to void your warranty...
When i took my car back to Toyota for repair...the rubber on one of my door came off...they asked me where i took my car for oil change and maintaince..and I told them that I took it to another Toyota dealer...but they don't believe us...saying they have no record of it...so they wasn't gonna fix the rubber on my door...so i called the place that i DID took my car to...Dave Nicole Toyota....and they had to call DVNLT to confirm it before they fix my door! bunch of jerks...hate those dealers...they are just looking for ways to rip you off!!

Thanks for the info. Taking my car to CT for the free car starter is looking more and more like a non-deal.
Hopefully I don't have to pay another $32 to do an oil change at my local Toyota dealer.

I wouldnt take it to CT to do anything, do it your self or take it to a reputable dealer (not all dealers are reputable for service ;))
Especially if you wanna keep this car.

Just called Toyota and they said it was ok to get the oil change elsewhere.
HOwever, i'm considering taking it back to Toyota for an oil change. in other words, do 2 oil changes.

i'd doo that, CT probably put in some very low quality oil, and that aint good.
If you want switch over to synthetic (my suggestion is 0w30 castrol syntec which for the winter is very good oil, even summer) or 5w30 mobil 1.

"Low quality" oil is perfectly fine, aslong as it's properly API rated, SL or SM, and aslong as he changes it in 5000kms.

I would say putting synthetic in a family Toyota is over doing it.

yea...I just called toyota about this too...they said it's okay but we have to keep the receipt to prove that we did get the oil change as scheduled...
but only oil change...any other services is not okay...including regular maintaince...
