Mazda Motor Co. says nearly 5,000 cars, which were aboard a vessel when it rolled nearly completely onto one side while crossing the Pacific, will not be sold as new.
Mazda spokesman Jay Amestoy said Wednesday that the vehicles — which were mostly Mazda 3 compacts and CX-7 SUVs — would be sold as used cars with full new-car warranties.
The MV Cougar Ace, which was carrying cars from Japan, was transferring its ballast while off the Alaskan coastline in late July when it listed 60 degrees on its port side.
The vessel, which was under the flag of Singapore, pulled into Portland, Ore., on Tuesday.
Amestoy said the automaker would also make sure that any potential buyers are made fully aware that the vehicles were on the ship.
"We won't sell any of them as new even though we don't know the condition of any of them," Amestoy said. "Our policy here is just to make sure the consumer is fully aware of everything."
Most of the cars were Mazda 3 compact cars and CX-7 SUVs, Amestoy said. A smaller number of RX-8s and MX-5 Miata sports cars were also aboard the ship. About 100 cars were not Mazdas but the ship's owner, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines of Tokyo, would not identify the other manufacturer.
The cars were secured onto the ship's 14 decks and no cars fell into the ocean. Crew struggled for over a month to right the ship.
The Singapore government is investigating what caused the vessel to list.
A naval architect, who slipped and hit his head, was killed during the incident. The Alaska Air National Guard and the Coast Guard rescued the rest of the vessel's crew.
Mazda boosted production in Japan and sent cars to the U.S. from other regions to ensure that dealers had a full fleet to offer for the month.
